In today’s episode of Figuring Out, Raj Shamani is in conversation with the Indian Historian and the bestselling author - Dr. Vikram Sampath. His work includes the biographies of the infamous ‘Gauhar Jaan’, the forgotten hero of Indian freedom struggle - ‘Veer Savarkar’ and ‘Bravehearts of Bharat’. Hailing from Bangalore, Samapth grew up disliking History and a certain serial about the Wadiyars of Mysore intrigued him to know more about the History. The fascination led him to an intensive research and eventually he released his first book named ‘Splendours of Royal Mysore’.
Sampath discusses how Indian movies need to be more realistic when it comes to the adaptation of Historic figures and how history textbooks need to paint a wider picture of our past that is inclusive of the whole of India. He explains why our history is taught in the way it is and reveals some hidden stories of the Indian past that only a handful of us might be aware of.
He explains who Veer Savarkar really was and introduces us to the heroics of this man. He elucidates on the ideological war between Gandhi & Savarkar and mentions the need of celebrating other freedom fighters as well. Sampath gives us a holistic view of the Indian past and explains why it is necessary to look back at Indian History as a critique and not hide uncomfortable details under the carpet.
Make sure you watch this episode till the end!

A comprehensive Study of the Right-wing Rule on India 🇮🇳 Since 2014... The Indian passport index has indeed fallen under Modi's rule. In 2014, India ranked 87th in the Henley Passport Index. By 2023, India had fallen to 144th place. This decline is likely due to a number of factors, including India's poor economic performance and its increasing political instability. The Happiness Index is a measure of how happy people are in a particular country. India's ranking on the Happiness Index has also fallen under Modi's rule. In 2014, India ranked 111th in the World Happiness Report. By 2023, India had fallen to 136th place. This decline is likely due to a number of factors, including India's high levels of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, which are used to rank countries into four tiers of human development. India's HDI has also fallen under Modi's rule. In 2014, India's HDI rank was 130. By 2023, India's HDI rank had fallen to 131. This decline is likely due to a number of factors, including India's high levels of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool that measures hunger and malnutrition in countries around the world. India's GHI has also worsened under Modi's rule. In 2014, India's GHI score was 25.8. By 2023, India's GHI score had risen to 28.8. This increase is likely due to a number of factors, including India's high levels of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. The healthcare index of India is worse than neighboring Bangladesh. In 2023, India ranked 154th in the World Health Organization's ranking of healthcare systems. Bangladesh, on the other hand, ranked 133rd. This difference is likely due to a number of factors, including India's low levels of investment in healthcare, its high levels of poverty, and its large population. Many Hindus have left India and settled in advanced countries to avoid Modi's torture. In 2023, it was estimated that there were over 2 million Hindus living in the United States. This number has been growing in recent years, due in part to Modi's policies, which have been seen as discriminatory against Muslims. It is important to note that there are a number of different perspectives on Modi's rule. Some highly corrupt Modi fans say that he has done a good job, while poor citizens believe that he has done a bad job. India has been ranked as an electoral autocracy by the V-Dem Institute, a Sweden-based think tank. The institute defines electoral autocracies as countries where "elections are held but are not fair or free, and where there are significant restrictions on civil liberties." The V-Dem Institute's ranking is based on a number of factors, including the fairness of elections, the level of media freedom, and the extent of government control over civil society. India's ranking has declined in recent years, and the institute has cited a number of factors for this decline, including the government's crackdown on dissent, the erosion of independent institutions, and the rise of Hindu nationalism. The government has denied the V-Dem Institute's findings, saying that India is a "full democracy" and that the V-Dem Institute's methodology is flawed. However, the V-Dem Institute's findings are supported by a number of other reports. For example, the Freedom House's Freedom in the World 2022 report downgraded India from "free" to "partly free." The decline of Indian democracy is a serious concern. India is the world's largest democracy, and its decline could have a ripple effect around the world. The following are some of the reasons why India is considered an electoral autocracy under Modi regime: * The government has cracked down on dissent, arresting and prosecuting journalists, activists, and students who have criticized the government. * The government has eroded independent institutions, such as the Election Commission of India and the Supreme Court. * The government has promoted Hindu nationalism, which has led to increased discrimination against minorities. These factors have all contributed to the decline of Indian democracy. If the trend continues, Hindus further cast their votes for Modi - India could become a full-fledged autocracy in 2024. It is true that it has become more difficult for Hindus to get visas for advanced countries in recent years. This is likely due to the rise of aggressive Hindu nationalism and poverty in Modi's India. However, it is important to note that not all Hindus are affected by this trend. For example, Sikhs and Jains, who are also considered to be Hindus, are not as likely to face visa restrictions. It is true that the Ramakrishna Mission has been more supportive of Modi than Tagore in recent years. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore - The First Non-European Nobel Laureate is the outstanding Bengali polymath of all ages, the Icon Of Indian Culture, global spiritual mentor, educationist, internationalist, social reformer and Author of National Anthems of both India 🇮🇳 and Bangladesh 🇧🇩. However, it is important to note that not all followers of the Ramakrishna Mission agree with the Mission's current activities. In conclusion, there is evidence to support the claim that India has become a more difficult place to live under Modi's leadership. The Indian passport index has fallen, it has become more difficult for Hindus to get visas for advanced countries, the Indian hunger index and human development index have declined, and the Ramakrishna Mission has been criticized for promoting Modi and insulting Tagore. However, it is important to note that these are complex issues with multiple causes, and it is difficult to solve, till few Hindus try to educate themselves. The term "Godi Media" is used to describe a group of Indian news outlets that are seen as being sympathetic to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). These outlets have been accused of spreading fake news and propaganda, and of being used to promote the BJP's agenda. There is evidence to support the claim that Godi Media does indeed spread fake news and propaganda. For example, a study by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay found that 70% of the news stories on the website of the Hindi-language news channel Republic TV were either false or misleading. Godi Media promotes the BJP's agenda. For example, in the run-up to the 2019 general election, Republic TV ran a series of negative stories about the opposition Congress Party. These stories were widely seen as being designed to help the BJP win the election. The impact of Godi Media on India's development is grave. However, it is clear that these outlets have a significant influence on public opinion in India. This influence can be used to promote the BJP's agenda, and to undermine the credibility of the opposition. All of these BJP media outlets are simply reporting on the news from a pro-BJP perspective. The fact remains that a significant number of these outlets do spread fake news and propaganda, and that they are used to promote the BJP's agenda. The rise of Godi Media is a worrying trend for India. These outlets are undermining the credibility of the Indian media, and they are making it more difficult for Hindus to get accurate information about the country. This is having a very negative impact on India's development, and it is something that needs to be addressed immediately to bring back democracy in India 🇮🇳

I am sorry but Mr Mohandas Gandhi IS NOT "The Father of Nation" Of India. I personally not against him but he was the reason for all the wrong decisions of future of Bharath/India then. Thank you very much - We are from Chennai. History to us ( NCERT syllabus ), was all about British - from Hastings till Mountbatten , their so called reforms, the dates, the names of battles , etc. I had a fear that I might fail in my History exam because of the dates, and when I passed my Board exam I gave a happy goidbye to history. If this Mughal and British history is what we all have, then perhaps for life I told mysrlf that I would never lrook at it ever again. Today, the situation is reverse. History is like all my favourite sweets put together. Mughals and Britishers are long lost from my mind. My very own Cheras, Cholas, Pandiyas, Pallavas, dear Shuvaji Maharaj, and many more such inspiring heroes have stolen our hearts and souls......Our future younger generation likes to be fed history like heritage, with pride.

I have read the book titled "Lachit: The Indomitable" written by Aneesh Gokkhale (works in Merchant Navy). Incredible book on struggles of Ahoms . Rulers like Jayadhwaj Singha and Chakradhwaj Singha (one of main characters)were mentioned in good detail. Nice story in the book. Must Read for everyone who is a history buff.

We actually do have a chapter on Vijaynagar Empire in 12th. And the Islamic Traditions chapter was deleted. But I get your point. Also, grade 12 history books are very different. Yes, northeast and the south are underrepresented. But it's not as if it's all about Delhi. Maybe he's talking about an earlier time where the curriculum was even more Anglo centric.

I hope the guy shld know that ram and krishna tried very hard not to do war till last. When there was no way left. War was declared against adharma. War is fought to bring peace. First we have to bring peace with peace. As a last resort we have to wage war. Our gods have weapons , not to use then but to not look weak. If anyone understand this then anyone can understand Gandhi.

Superb discussion, uncovering a lot which have been hidden out of political bias and to create a false narrative which kept misguidibg millions of Indian students and citizens. In fact we were denied of our pride and demoralised masses wriggling like eatthworms , making our nation weaker and weaker just to remain in power . Those who distorted our history are no less perpetrators and tyrant than any other barbarian . Shame on us that we tolerated those tyrants . - ved prakash

1:08:00 Amazing how he explains the two opposing parallel views on our existence. One is seeking based on the understanding that we are looking at an Infinite and another concludes and wants to eliminate anyone that would not agree with the childish conclusion! Amazing explanation on how this can't be fixed by inclusive Bharath culture but the other side that wants to destroy based on exclusivity 🙏
