oh I wish our star fruit fruited all year, that would be so sweet! 😻 hopefully as our trees mature they will get more strong and will bloom better... Do they taste the same throughout the year?

I been wanting to grow one I live up North but I want to grow in pot and when I move to Naples or Ft Myles I will bring it with me LOL I love them so hard to find up here even in Asian store I don’t see them selling the fruits.
@growpuravida2 жыл бұрын
The tree grows so fast that it’s better to buy it when you move. If you buy it now and wait several years, it will get so root bound in the pot that it might never grow a proper root when you plant it in soil. We learned it the hard way, now we try to buy either very young trees in small gallon size, or plant from seed.

@@growpuravida Thank you I didn’t know that I thought I get a heads start and when I put it in the ground it will fruit sooner.
@growpuravida2 жыл бұрын
yes, it goes for most vigorous growers, especially the ones with a strong tap root. When you choose a tree, check its growth rate. Some plants, like jaboticabas, for example, can live in pots for years and be pretty happy.

Does this have to be grafted? I see seeds being sold by a reputable seller, but I don't know if it's worth growing from seed since they'd be on their own root.
@growpuravida Жыл бұрын
The Ziziphis mauritiana or Indian jujube sold here in nurseries in South FL are grafted to a wild thorny jujube variety. There is another more common jujube, the Chinese jujube, Ziziphus jujuba, that grows better in a bit colder climates. The rootstock uses a wild variety as tolerates the highly alkaline soil here. But i have heard people do airlayers too. I myself did two airlayers a few months ago and have not checked yet of their success. Will let you know if they succeed or not.
@jolus6678 Жыл бұрын
@@growpuravida , It's odd because I just did some reading on Indian jujube. All the articles claim the tree prefers neutral to alkaline soil. Also the University of Florida says it's considered potentially invasive and that wild specimens of Indian jujube have been documented growing in grasslands in Miami-dade, Broward, Glades, and Lee counties.

I have one that started from seed two years ago. It is miserably thorny. It's only the thornless that produce fruit, correct? Where do I find a branch like that to graft?

a wild thorny variety is used for rootstock, it's very suitable for Florida soil and doesn't mind high alkalinity/limestone.

Hello, do you know where I can find one of those trees. Thank you goddess
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
Depending on where you are in FL you can ask around at local nurseries, let us know your location and we can guide you. In FL they need to be grafted to a wild variety of Ziziphus.

Do you have to peel the seed inside before planting it? or can you plant it as is?
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
You can plant as it is, but here in Florida, the wild variety jujube seed is planted and then a better variety is grafted onto it. Wild variety jujube grows better in FL alkaline, sandy soil, has better resistant to pests.
