I've noticed all the blown up Indian made muskets have been in the hands of reenactors who are notorious for poor maintenance of their equipment . I've been shooting India made muskets for 50 years now haven't had one blow up yet , however I clean and maintain my weapons .

I used to do Civil war reenactments as a kid (I was a drummer boy) Well our "captain" went Hamm on this guy who was leaning on his musket barrel down. He grabbed the musket from the guy and was saying not only could you actually shoot a projectile at the other side, but you could create a pipe bomb. There is a lot of standing around in wool uniforms so you would see people just leaning on their muskets. Most would do it barrel up.

Things like this make me go crazy. When i learned these Indian muskets were made of old axles. I bet they might be the strongest barrels for reproduction and replicas. all the stresses in the steel would have come out over time in its life as a axle. Which I believe that's probably the perfect metal for barrels. reminds me of all the people that say dont shoot antique firearms.. They will blow up and are extremely unsafe. Every time i have seen or heard of a antique firearm blowing up. its because they used smokeless powder. But most people just see old gun blows up because it was shot.

The steel in the barrels is actually a pretty decent carbon steel unlike the old barrels which were made out of iron that was flattened rolled and then seem welded and even those barrels while yes on occasion they would burst it was not very common

I shortened an Indian musket barrel years ago. I shortened it 6 inches to make it into a canoe gun for a customer. The barrel bore exit was centered but 6 inches rearward it was over .100 off center. I've never recommended an Indian musket to any of my re-enactor friends, even if they are cheap friends.

G'Day from Australia, I haven't shot my muzzle loaders for almost 30 years. I used them all ( Indian Brown Bess, two Indian smoothbore Enfields and a Euroarms Enfield musketoon) at shooting clubs and reenactments. The shooting clubs were very strict with firearms safety but most of the reenactment groups were very casual to non existent when it came to safety. I often saw muskets almost filled with grey clinkery powder residue. "We're only firing blanks--we don't need to clean our guns!" was a common attitude. I must add that this wasn't all reenactors but it was still a disturbing proportion. I never had any problems shooting my Indian muskets. My Bess shot as well and reliably as the much higher priced Pedersoli muskets. I even won a smooth bore gong shoot with it at a colonial/mountain man shoot. Thanks for all your fine videos. Cheers, Steve

Not sure what's a worse possibility. Either someone (the reenactor) was that dumb and embarrassed to do that and then blame the gun, someone was that dumb and malicious to try to purposely give a gun a bad name, or someone was that dumb and egotistical to try to go "internet famous" at all costs, including the safety of themselves or others. Either way, it's sad, and nothing good will come of it. Thanks for the video explaining what went on.

I've seen this same photo over the years. It is actually from around 2013 and, as you stated, has a mud plug in the end of the barrel. I've also read accounts that stated they gun had never been cleaned and that they had used modern smokeless gun powder. None of which has been proven. After I watched your channel, Madras Arsenal, I never met a gun I didn't like, and a few others, I bought my first musket from Veterans Arms and I looking forward to shooting it at the range! Thanks!

That's what I thought had happened initially was that they had used smokeless powder and then I realized that there was a huge amount of mud in the end of the barrel too I assume that a combination of the two is probably the reason this gun blew up either that or I wouldn't be surprised if he actually stuck the gun down into the ground and pulled the trigger.

I've done a lot of work on indian locks to get good and reliable function, but even with the heaviest charges in the highest round count guns we have never experienced any kind of failure, catastrophic or otherwise, with indian, italian, American, or any other make of gun. Indian muskets can be plenty safe but make sure to thoroughly inspect the gun before shooting.

The Quality of Steel is Good However The Military Heritage site says you need to have the Barrels Proofed before using. I still think Original Pieces are Affordable and if in descent condition are still Preferable, However I have always wanted a Baker Rifle, the Originals are unobtainable, the last one i saw for sale was over 10,000! However for a Model 1842 you can find Originals for a couple of hundred and get a new made barrel and the total cost is around $1000- $1200. .... I still could go for a Baker from India though, Ive always wanted to reenact as a Royal American 60th at Chalmette. Finally got a Original Type 3 Springfield dated 1812 , needs some Assembly Though. Might post a Video of the Restoration for the Antique Arms Community. Either way I definitely Appreciate your reviews of the Indian 🇮🇳 Made Reproductions! Thank You for the Inspiring Content!

The mud was in the muzzle because the user of the gun dropped it after it burst. Could a black powder arm burst from a non-rammed black, yes absolutely. Reason why? Well Indian made arms are made with DOM barrels, drawn over mandrel and lap welded over a swage block. In the 18th century, this was commonly done in North America as contraband method making gun barrels, however there’s there a huge difference, they used wrought iron. Indian guns are made with steel, mild steel alloyat best which can not be lapwelded in forge heat, wrought iron welds at forge heats. Theres no way these fells in their shops in India generate enough forge heat to weld a steel barrel, its just not possible to generate that kind of a weld without modern technology. It needs to be TIG welded or MIG or MAG welded and then reheat treated in a blast furnace and tempered. They simply do not make barrels like that Indian, you can call them to ask. Could these guns blow up, absolutely they could as the welds along the seam of the barrel are not welded correctly for stress, vibrations or gas leakage. Sorry folks, while most of you can enjoy shooting them, you’re really shooting something that is equal to the quality of a musket made with Home Depot gas lines.
@MS-ig7ku
@MS-ig7ku Жыл бұрын
DOM tube is a lot stronger than a seam welded iron tube, the lowest grade modern mild steel is twice as strong as wrought iron. The reality is even gas pipe is stronger than many period barrels.

Well heres a question for you. Is these Indian made guns are as dangerous as people say, how are vendors still allowed to sell them? You'd think they'd go out of business because everyone's "curry popper" is blowing up on them, word would spread amongst these black powder forums and it would, its a pretty niche hobby and people would stop buying them. I did extensive research before buying an Indian musket and alot of people saying "don't buy them, they'll blow up, buy pedersoli" reek of elitism. Indian made muskets work fine, strip them, check them over and the barrel and breech plug, make sure everything is sound like you would do to any other gun.

They shoot well and if you spend a bit of time polishing the lock and trigger mechanism they are good workhorses . If it's the one that happened at the Gettysburg reenactment, from what I was told the guy was in a formation doing a charge, he tripped Beral went in the mud and in the heat of the moment he didn't bother to make sure the thing was clear

According to some who were present, the barrel plug occurred after the barrel blew. When it blew, the gun went down into the mud bending the barrel over.

Obvious, guns that blow up at the muzzle had an obstruction of some kind. No fault of the gun.

On all of your Indian made muskets did you have to drill the vent hole when you first received it? Or is shipping in a "non-firing" state something new with Military Herritage Arms?

I still don’t want to shoot a gun made anywhere you can’t drink the water. The dirt in the musket barrel could be due to the musket flying out of the shooters hand and hitting the ground. Is the money saved worth the risk?

lol so basically you wouldn't have shot most guns made in Europe in the 17th or 18th century. so no originals

Oh my Lord! Thank you for clarifying that. I had been a re-enactor for many years starting with the Richmond Howitzers artillery battery then moving to Harts Engineers 3rd Co infantry. I personally own an original 1842, three land and grooved, cone in barrel rifled musket as well as a '42 repro of the same. The only issue i ever had was making the mistake of trying to use Pyrodex on the field. It didn't work and I got an ass chewing for trying. The latter is just plain idiocy! Here is a video of the unit i was with. I can be seen at 0:28 with my mustache and musket. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYK8kqOoo82Bi7c

I have an original Brown Bess and I always marveled at how thin the barrel was. My dad had it for wall decor. Not sure I want to shoot it. But I have always used GOEx in my older guns like my urberti colt revolver. True BP is listed as an explosive while smokeless is not. But in a gun, true BP can reach about 10 to 11 KIP of pressure. Smokeless can teach 30 or 40 or more KiP. So BP will burn faster up front but never develop the final pressure. The modern BP substitutes bother me. Not sure what they are made of but they are NOT an explosive. They have to be a special formulation of smokeless that had been tuned down some what. But in a closed space where escape is not possible, I wonder if the smokeless heritage of the substitutes can push pressures upward of say 18 to 25 KIP? But at the end of the day, I think it’s unwise to fire a gun with a butt plug.

I was gunsmith and I saw 2 mod 94 win, a 303 Enfield, and a bunch of shotguns birdcaged, mostly due to mud, barrels bulged due to wads, a Parker Hale Enfield where 10 inches of barrel broke off, I saw an no1mk3 with the receiver bent down. Was at the range when an idiot loaded a 300win mag with a hot load in a no1 Ruger and it blew, but the receiver survived and was eventually rebuilt. My experience tells me any gun can let go, but it is rare, enless you're a moron, saw a few of those in my day.

I had a feeling I would be seeing something like this. I was getting interested in buying a finished smoothbore flintlock. Made a few from Kits but kits are scarce here in California . Same with all the vittles it takes to feed em. So I start watching videos about supposed New complete kit guns and they end up being tutorials on do it yourself . Can You imagine being issued something like that in the service. Like disassembling the rifle and a “soft spot” in the stock chips out or You have to check the head spacing and machine , drill this or that and file and polish etc. to get the rifle to work . All things a soldier is not to do to their weapon. If You ask Me a bunch of Chi Coms,Soviets, and Bidens are running these companies and sabotaging American shooter’s . If You search John Wayne Punches Commies the part left out of the secret cell is who infiltrates the firearms industry to cripple and intimidate those in shooting sports. I can just Hear Sturak now “ our comrades infiltrating the gun factories will ruin the reputation’s of the manufacturers and cause fear and distrust of their guns. It will be as effective as putting pipe bombs into the hands of those into shooting sports and causing casualties without risk to Our own troops”.

I couldn't be more happy to get issued an old musket like ol char in the war of independence. Good solid musket. My most favorite firearm I've ever owned got me sold on flintlocks and all for 500 bucks. She went through over 2500 rounds of ammunition loaded to the original specifications of 155 grains of 1 f before having to have the hammer swapped because the case hardening wore through.
