Time for an Oil Change on my 2016 Indian Scout Sixty. I provide an overview of how the Indian service manual process goes, then I perform the oil change how I usually do it. I am not sponsored by anyone. I purchased my own tools, parts, and supplies.
Note: This video is for information and entertainment Only!!! I am not a professional mechanic. This video is not meant to be a step by step guide. Consult your service or owners manual. If you are not confident or do not have have the skills required, take you Scout to your local Indian Motorcycle Dealer or professional mechanic. I assume no responsibility.
With that said, it's a fairly easy process. Below are some useful links from Indian for the Scout Oil Change Kit and Service Manual.

✨🏍 Rench Ranch, THANK YOU VERY MUCH SIR! You are a Pay Attention to Detail Man, and You Speak very clearly! I have watched other videos for this Process and in my humble opinion Your Video is Great! I will follow Your Procedure, I also have my Owners Manual which is Highly Recommended and I do my due diligence to Strictly Pay Attention to The Details; after all, The Bike Cost me A Lot of money and I will be keeping it and Riding it for a long time! I have personally run into people who have used a Torque Wrench to Specs and the result was not favorable. I also have discovered That All Torque Wrenches are not set at exact proper torque, so we need to make sure that the Torque Wrench is in Proper Spec. They can become inaccurate with Use and need to be Re-Calibrated from time to time! Anyway, this is not Rocket Science and Common Sense is very useful! So, Thank You Very Much for a Great and Informative Detailed Video! Enjoy The Ride! ✨🏍💯%.

You’re a braver man than I heating the bike up all the way. I always do it the way Honda says to do it, which is just run it 2-3 minutes. Granted that’s for a wet sump bike, and the scout is semi dry sump, but I still say good enough. I fully agree about the torque spec, I’ve actually seen them strip on a scout before attempting the “correct” torque, and I’ve heard of plenty other horror stories about it. Indian engineers should really update that torque spec. Most Ford trucks I work on regularly I believe the torque is 10-12 ft. Lbs, and that’s on a steel pan. I torque the scout plugs 8 ft. Lbs, and they don’t leak. Nice video as always. P.S. now I’m gonna have to go look at my bike to see if my clutch pivot cover comes near my dipstick, I never noticed if it’s close or not. Looks close on the video though.

To be honest, even though the manual says to get the bike up to temp, I am not 100% sure if I personally buy into that. But since it was a step Indian indicated in the service manual, I did it. It is a semi-dry sump so figured I'd follow the directions. Thanks for watching, much appreciated! Mike

Would greatly appreciate a guide of this depth for flushing and changing coolant. Been having a hard time making sense of what the manual says to do, especially since they want you to use a vacuum tool to depressurize the system per instruction if I am not mistaken.

15 lb ft torque does seem like a lot. Heck, GM LS engines oil drain plug torque is 18 lb ft torque! I usually only go 8-12, which equals to about just snug then a little budge.

Everybody has their own ways of doing things and I think this is a good job. I would probably pull the oil filter before the drain plugs only because if you would happen to drop the oil filter it is into a mostly empty drain pan. With six motorcycles I usually change the oil way before the recommended mileage also.

The copper oil sealing washer (crush washer) is 19x12x1.3 mm. The official Indian Scout oil change kit has 4qts of 15w60 full synthetic in it. Amsoil and some other companies make the 15w60 full synthetic motorcycle oil so you can shop around. The oil filter (non-Polaris / Indian) is a HiFlo HF199 or equivalent. If you scrounge around you can probably find a deal on all these items. In some cases the Indian Scout Oil Change Kit is cheaper. Indian Only has their own Oil Change Kit for Scouts. indianonlymotorcycles.com/product/scout-amsoil-oil-change-kit-15w60-hf199/ Thanks for watching! Mike

Very clean and nice explanation 👌 Which Engine Oil is best for this Scout...Genuine Indian oil or Amsoil 15W-60 V-Twin Engine oil for for longer drain interval and which Coolant you recommend for this hot running engine...Thanks😊
@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch Жыл бұрын
I personally don't have enough miles to rate one oil over another. IMO if you are still under warranty use the Indian stuff. Otherwise best judgement. As far as the coolant, I stick with the Indian / Polaris brand. There may be others that will work as well but if you get it wrong it can cause corrosion in the cooling system. At some point I will probably put together a coolant flush and fill video. Thanks for watching! Cheers! Mike

Enough torque just to seat the Crush-Washer . No rocket science needed. A torque wrench with the values helps but really not needed . Just be careful and make sure to use a 4ft. Breaker bar to tighten down. If needed use a 10-14 ft. Breaker and straps to hold bike to a concrete floor .

If I remember from my last oil change, the oil is used for the engine and transmission,hence the 2 drain plugs ?.
@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that is correct. It's also a semi-dry sump setup. Fairly unique for a motorcycle. Always impresses me the Engineering behind the design. Like not seeing any frame underneath the bike as the engine is a stressed part of the chassis. I know sport bikes do this , but for a lightweight cruiser it's unique. Thanks for watching! Mike

Do I need to take both drain plugs out? If I don't what will happen?
@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch 3 ай бұрын
Actually, yes you do. Technically IMO it's not the end of the world if you do not (like in a pinch you're missing crush washers or whatever reason). However you are not removing as much of the old / used oil as you otherwise would. So you will just be adding clean oil to a certain quantity of old / dirty oil. The Scout's oiling system is all shared between the crank, primary, and transmission portions of the engine. It circulates completely. It's not like a Harley where you have different oil's for the main engine, vs. the primary, vs. the trans. IMO oil is relatively cheap, engines are expensive. Just remove both the plugs and drain it completely. It's easy enough. Cheers and thanks for watching! Much appreciated. Mike

Does the oil come up to the threads in the dip stick hole on yours I got mine changed at the dealership and it’s filled to the threads.
@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch 10 ай бұрын
When filled properly the oil level on the Scout should only be at the top "full" mark on the dip-stick. Indian says to check the oil with the bike level and engine warm. IMO if you are seeing oil all the way up to the threads of the side cover fill opening, it's way too full!!! I'd go get a turkey baster or syringe and a length of tubing from the hardware store and extract out the extra oil. Again it only needs to be at the full mark on the dip-stick. It's easier to pull it out with some type of suction than try only to drain a little from the plug. If an inexperienced bike porter did the oil change from the kit, they probably used all 4 quarts and didn't check the level as they filled it. This is too much. If not rectified, the excess oil can get whipped by the crank into a froth inside the engine causing oiling problems. So I'd get it sorted ASAP if I was you. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I have been away due to work. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Much appreciated. Regards, Mike

I bought them years ago from a Amazon retailer called Mr Lucky's. Honestly I think they are rebranded Bike Master small round mirrors with a Harley post / stem mount. The clamps are generic 1" handle bar clamp to Harley stem mount adapters. The current link is below. I can tell you for sure, that you will want to visit the hardware store and swap out the screws, washers, and split washers with better hardware. Otherwise it works fine.
