it would also be interesting to look into why the early stamps of certain countries had perforation problems[as if the perforation machines then were blunt]. CHINA, JAPAN, INDIA and so on.

Yes Roger - that would be very interesting :)

Hi Jeff! The Indian stamps you showed were mostly knew for me - not that I have a appreciable knowledge of Indian stamps! 😆 I hope you didn't say and I missed it: do you know what the umbrella, that you pointed out on some of the stamps, means? I guess it is a symbol of something? Thanks for showing the Indian stamps. In some regards they are pretty "strange" but beautiful in their own right. Enjoy the remainder of the weekend! 🙂

Hi Charnie - I should have done some more research - I will certainly mention this next time I show an Indian stamp (although not all have the umbrella) - In Hinduism, the parasol is known by the Sanskrit word of 'chatra', and is a traditional Indian symbol of both protection and royalty. The parasol is part of a grouping of eight auspicious symbols that were traditionally used in ceremonies such as the coronation or investiture of a king.

Hi Charnie and Jeff, the design of the stamp feature the Royal Coat of Arms, the stamp which was shown by Jeff with "One Anna" is the 3rd Maharaja Stamp. The top left is a Palanquin (used to carry a person) is a symbol of Progress, the right top is a Conch Shell which denotes Abundance, the bottom left is an Umbrella which denotes Protection and the bottom right is the Lamp which denotes Knowledge. The first postage stamp of Cochin State was issued in 1892 and lasted till 1949. On July 1st, 1949 Cochin State and Travancore State merged together and it was renamed as the United States of Travancore and Cochin. On 1st Nov 1956 after the passage of the States Reorganisation Act, Kerala State was formed. Thank you both!! Joe. 😊
