"It's not about money... it's about sending a message." Fun Fact: While filming a chase scene on Lake Street, the Chicago Police Department received several calls from concerned citizens stating that the police were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a dark vehicle of unknown make or model. And Scene Fact: Heath Ledger directed both homemade videos that The Joker sends to GCN. The first video involving the fake Batman (Andy Luther) was done under writer, producer, and director Christopher Nolan's supervision. Nolan thought Ledger had done so well with that sequence, he felt there was no need for him to be there when it came time to film the scene where reporter Mike Engel (Michael Anthony Hall) reads The Joker's statement. He put his trust in Ledger and let him do whatever he wanted, ultimately pleased with the result after he'd seen the outcome. Becoming The Joker: In preparation for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger hid away in a motel room for about six weeks. During this extended stay of seclusion, Ledger delved deep into the psychology of the character. He devoted himself to developing the Joker's every tic, namely the voice and that sadistic-sounding laugh (for the voice, Ledger's goal was to create a tone that didn't echo the work Jack Nicholson did in his 1989 performance as the Joker). Ledger's interpretation of the Joker's appearance was primarily based on the chaotic, disheveled look of punk rocker Sid Vicious combined with the psychotic mannerisms of Malcolm McDowell's character, Alex De Large, from A Clockwork Orange (1971). Heath Ledger's sudden death from drug toxicity on January 22, 2008, prompted immediate speculation over this movie's state and Ledger's disposition prior to death. Soon after Ledger's death was announced, Warner Bros. issued a statement that verified that Ledger had finished all of his scenes in principal photography, as well as post-production duties (looping), thus making the Joker his final, completed movie role. Rumors abounded that playing the intense role had taken its toll on Ledger's mental state, causing him to become depressed and take the wrong combination of drugs as a result. However, his family has since put such rumors to rest by stating that far from being depressed, he had a lot of fun playing the role. Ledger did suffer from insomnia throughout his life, and would often take sleeping pills together with other prescription drugs (something his sister had actually warned against the night before his death). Unfortunately, the mix he took that night proved to be a fatal combination.

It’s crazy to imagine the possibilities we could have seen of him continuing this role if he had not met his untimely demise. Taken too soon…

Very good breakdown of the movie and you understood it very well for a first time watch. Another interesting thing is The Joker was laughing when Batman tossed him off the building cause he was hoping he broke Batman's morality by getting Batman to kill him. But Batman ended up saving him and keeping his morality intact. Batman is the only who can't be corrupted by Joker. Which is why The Joker loves him as an enemy.

The scene where joker's detonator fails to detonate the hospital on the first attempt was an accident, the pyrotechnics were delayed, but nolan liked heath ledger's reaction so much that was the take that they ended up using

Heath Ledger was posthumously awarded an Oscar for supporting actor for this role; he died shortly before the movie's release. Joaquin Phoenix also won an Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of the titular character in "Joker", which is a very different version of the character. That movie is definitely worth watching. It is amazing to me that a comic book villain could generate 2 Oscar performances. It goes to show how interesting of a character the Joker can be.

A slight side track but still in the realm of Batman; could you consider creating a tribute / reaction to the late and amazing Kevin Conroy and his voice? He passed away last year, and was the sole reason I got into acting. On MsMojo there was a video about the best voice acting in animated movies and I think he should've been included for his role in Batman the Mask of Phantasm (the scene at the cementary). I have a voice acting background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's very underrated as Batman (ditto Mark Hamill as Joker) and even non existent in the conversation. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in those new Resident Evil games :)

It's great cuz Gary Oldman puts a little sauce on the word "dark" in dark knight that you have to really listen to in order to catch so it's pretty clear that in the Christopher Nolan universe that that epithet for Batman originates specifically as a counter to Harvey Dent, who's been being called "White Knight" throughout the movie.

I like how Joker isn't a particularly good fighter. He just throws some dogs and a net on Bats and starts wailing with a lead pipe like a savage. No fancy ninjitsu or kung fu, just pure insane rage.

Great reaction as always Aishwarya . This is a phenomenal film and easily one of the best Superhero films ever made ( Even though it plays more like a crime movie than a Superhero flick ) the cinematography is outstanding and all the performances are amazing and like you I prefer Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel too . The late great Heath Ledger is so magnetic you absolutely cannot take your eyes of him when he is onscreen , I remember when they announced his casting there were a lot of sceptics saying this pretty boy actor cant pull it off - God did he prove them wrong . I love everything about his depiction of Joker from the unsettling little mannerisms the licking of his lips ( Apparently doing the voice gave Heath a dry mouth and he licked his lips to moisten his mouth but it gave him a very snake like appearance ) to the way he runs after Gordon is shot crouching down and low like a animal . Heaths depiction is way more serious than Jack Nicholson whose Joker is almost played like a comedy . Heaths Joker really gives off the feeling that he is so deranged , sadistic and unpredictable that he will kill or maim anyone to get his goals . Love a lot of the sound choices like the low droning noise which gets louder when Joker tells Batman he has kidnapped Rachel and Harvey . In fact the whole interrogation scene is an amazing scene and one of my favourites where you realise that despite being arrested and in a cell Joker has all the power and ( no pun intended ) holds all the cards. As far as comparing each Joker to the comic there was a Graphic Novel in 1988 called Killing Joker where Joker kidnaps Gordon shoots Jim's Daughter Barbara ( Batgirl ) paralyses her and assaults her in a effort to drive Jim insane to prove a point ( Kind of how he corrupts Harvey ) he recounts his origin story of being a failed Comedian who takes part in a botched robbery and falls in a vat of chemicals , but the reader is left wondering how accurate this is ! The closest to this maybe origin story is Tim Burtons 1989 Batman , as far as who physically resembles the Joker Jared Leto is closest from the awful 2016 Suicide Squad movie , Comic Joker has a very long thin face but they screwed up Leto's Joker by giving him silver teeth and dumb tattoos . The recent film with Joaquin Phoenix is an amazing film and well worth watching , Joaquin's portrayal is incredibly unsettling and the entire film has a real creepy sense of unease the fantastic score by Hildur Guonadottir is so so great and really lends to the sense of unease , but like Heaths this Joker is very very far from the comic but it really works . Speaking of Scores Hans Zimmer does a phenomenal job scoring the trilogy he is one of my favourite composers to this day .. I would highly recommend these other Chris Nolan films - Inception which is a very trippy , surreal film which borrows from Matrix , Total Recall and James Bond but still manages to feel fresh and original , there are a lot of actors in Inception that appeared in the Dark Knight Trilogy - Ken Watanabe , Joseph Gordon Levitt , Michael Caine , Tom Hardy , Cillian Murphy and the lovely Marion Cotillard . The other is The Prestige which stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as two warring Magicians it is incredibly twisty turny and unpredictable . I believe they did plan to have Joker make a cameo in Dark Knight Rises but after the very sad passing of Heath could not and did not feel recasting would be appropriate . Look forward to your reaction to Dark Knight Rises it is a great finale .

I'll put this as quickly as I can, the characters in this one are perfect too faced coin. Batman stands for good and he has rules, and joker stands for chaos and he has no rules. In the interrogation room joker sees himself in Batman as two sides of the same coin

The next one is "The Dark Knight Rises" and The Joker isn't in the next one because Christopher Nolan wanted to honor Heath's work and didn't feel right recasting The Joker. Thought I would let you know that now so you didn't spend next movie wondering if he was going to show up and be disappointed if he didn't.
