It didn't make the edit, but the delivery of "you have made lava?" Absolutely kills me every time

That you started to lose it when you saw the dog running after the bus makes me think you are not going to make it through this series. It is going to be rough.

Best way for a show to put fear into an audience- no zombies/monsters/jump scares- just REALITY.

It’s shows like Chernobyl that teaches us so much about history that we hardly learn about in school and it’s incredible. Massive props to everyone involved in this series.

Boris has the best arc of the series and is my favorite character by far!

The title of Episode One was, I believe, a reference to the exact moment the reactor exploded. 09:41 This helicopter crash happened, but not until months later. Part of the blades got caught in a dangling chain. Everyone on board survived the crash but died of radiation poisoning months later. It is interesting how Boris understands the often counter-intuitive nature of how power worked in the Soviet Union. Boris is one of the highest ranking individuals in the country, but he lives and thrives entirely at the will of a handful of more-powerful men. BE WARNED--episode four is BRUTAL beyond words. 14:32 IMHO Boris is not so much out of it but adjusting to a series of emotional shocks, not least that he himself is going to die because of this. And the weight of responsibility that has been put on his shoulders. He rises to the crisis quite admirably in fact. 15:01 REMEMBER THESE NAMES. This is a superbly well made series, and I am deeply grateful for your reaction. I mean, we know they got it somewhat under control--we're still here, after all! Ukraine and Russia are not radioactive wastelands. Europe is not dead or dying. But the human price for that was horrifying, and this series has more heroes per square centimeter than any war movie ever made. It is awe-inspiring, and of course soul-wrenching at the same time for exactly the same reasons.

I was there a couple of years earlier. I think it was 2012. I'm glad I got to see the original sarcophagus before it was covered by the new containment. I remember very well watching it on the news while it was happening back in 1986 and have been interested in it ever since. I'll never forget the sight of that iconic tower above the sarcophagus when I caught my first sight of it through the trees.

The flashlights dying really did happen. The solution in the series is made for TV. In reality, they felt their way to the valve.

Also, just to give an idea how big an explosion of 2-4 megatons is, the largest nuke ever tested, the Tsar Bomba, yeilded around 55 megatons. The bombs that dropped on Hiroshima , Little Boy, yeilded 15 kilotons. Fat man, dropped on Nagasaki, yeilded 21 kilotons. Meaning, this explosion, would be about 130-260 times the size of Hiroshima bomb and 100-200 times the size of the Nagasaki bomb.

Colonel General Pikalov was awarded Hero of the Soviet Union due to his bravery in combat during battle of stalingrad in ww2. There's two reasons he offered to drive the truck himself : 1. excellent military commanders believe in the axiom of 'never ask your troops to do something you wont do yourself' and 2. he knew that if he, being the head of the chemical & bioloigcal corps of Red Army came back with whatever readings, it couldn't be dismissed as 'some dumb soldier who didnt know how to read the meter or is trying to tell lies to destroy the party' kinda nonsense.

Typical comment...copy/pasted here... In this episode, there were a few things the makers of the show changed for various reasons. For one thing, the character who said that they should close off the city in the first episode and is evacuated in this one, did not exist...he was added for dramatic purposes. Also, the helicopter crash did not happen so soon after the explosion...it really happened months later in October, 1986, and had nothing to do with radiation. As I mentioned in my comment to episode 1, once you are done with the series, the History vs Hollywood article on the show is a must read.

Definitely you should turn subtitles on for this series...unless it is too late and you already watched the whole series without them...in which case...nevermind. Also...side note...it is really hard to do direct calculations to find out how much money 400 rubles back then is in terms of today's economics...mostly due to the fact that all prices in the Soviet Union were set by the State. The best way is probably to compare it according to buying power...so 400 rubles was about a month's salary for a very well paid worker...so at least $7k up to maybe around $10k assuming a current day salary of $75k to $120k USD per year.
