Shades of Thodi: Carnatic Classical Face-Off

This production demonstrates advanced elements of spontaneous improvisation on the lyrics 'Malmaruga Shanmuga' from the Carnatic composition 'Karthikeya Gangeya' composed by Papanasam Sivan in Adi thalam (8-beat cycle) and in Thodi ragam (a preset melodic framework). The improvisation techniques used are referred to as nereval, where a line from the composition is sung in different styles bound by the ragam, and kalpana swaram, where different mathematical note patterns are embellished around the same line.
The nereval section is also "ragamalika", in nature, incorporating different ragas.

Till the neraval it was pure emotions and ecstatic but the intelligent calculated Swara’s spoiled what Todi and Ragamalika had created. Calculations are part of Carnatic music but not necessary all the time I feel.

Ravish Banihatti it is 2-kaLai adi. To accommodate the slow paced song, they count each beat twice.
