One of the things that helped the union win the battle of Gettysburg was that their lines was in the shape of a fish hook. Making it easier for them to be able to move troops in their interior lines faster when it was needed. General Lees Confederate lines was stretched out over 5 miles. Making it harder to coordinate and attack better. Before Pickett's Charge there was nearly 300 cannons being fired on both sides for 2 hours. The Union stopped firing their cannons after a while to preserve ammunition for the assault of the Confederates. The main devastation the Confederates had on Pickett's charge was when they got to the Emmitsburg Road. There was 5 foot fences on both side of the road that the Confederates had to climb over and they was within the Union soldier's musket fire but the Union soldier's was ordered not to fire until they got to that fence. So they had to cross over both fences under heavy Union fire. On top of that the Union cannons started firing canister shots. A canister shots was a cylinder can that was stuffed with about 30-50 1 inch iron or led round balls backed with sawdust. When shot from a cannon they should scatter out in a wide arc. At the distance from that road to the Union lines a canister shot would practically cut a man in half. At half that distance the power of a canister shots would go clean through 3-4 men before it stopped.

Gettysburg was the biggest battle partly because it lasted 3 days. The prior battle of Antietam only lasted one day, but that one day was the biggest loss of life in one day. There is still much prejudice between the two sides, it didn't end emotionally in 1865. Both battles are part of the two attempts by General Lee to invade the North (all other battles were the Union invading the South). The artillery battle on the third day was the greatest cannonade ever fired in US history, but the Union still had more ammo, they simply stopped, then waited for the Rebels to attack ... then the Union cannon fire resumed. General Lee was weakened, but able to fight on for almost two more years. Total casualties from the war, for both sides, both military and civilian is estimated to be 1.5 million killed and injured. Most of these were due to non-combat trauma ... only about 38% were due to combat.

My grandfather 4 generations back and his 3 brothers all fought for the Confederacy. He was killed at Gaines Mills ,his youngest brother was killed at Franklin . His other two brothers were both wounded and taken prisoner at Chickamauga . I have walked all three battlefields and stood on the very places where grandpa and his youngest brother were killed .My hair stood on end ,it was a very eerie feeling . It is impossible to imagine taking part in a full on frontal charge against a dug-in enemy which outnumbers you .

@@dsmkrotj4990 I have not heard a single democrat call for a civil war, lol. Also gun regulations like an age limit of 21yo on buying an assault rifle (we have this for handguns already) is not taking guns away. Most people, even those like me that consider themselves democrats in this political climate, support gun ownership and the 2nd amendment and own guns ourselves. We are just sick of the current system safeguards not working and teenagers who can't even be trusted buy a beer and the mentally ill getting their hands on guns and killing people. Attempts to fix the current system being shot down as attempts at "outlawing guns" are just GOP propaganda to stir up votes.

@@dsmkrotj4990 Well, if you think about it, it would be pretty stupid to be planning a civil war and advocating gun control at the same time, now wouldn't it? So, I think most of the people who want fewer guns actually want LESS in the way of killing, not more.

At the time of the Civil war the US. was a nation of eighteen and a half million people which included 5.5 million free and 3.5 million enslaved in the Confederacy, I hope that puts a little perspective on the loss of 50, 000 soldiers in one day and 620,000 in five years.

The reason the war started was that the north didn't have slavery and its economy was more industrial with manufacturing. The south was more agricultural with using slaves for most of the economy (especially picking cotton that was selling big in Europe at the time). And if half a country is anti slavery and the other half pro it's just a matter of time before there's conflict. It was almost 200 yrs ago but people still cry about slavery like every white person owned a hundred slaves and were terrible to them but slaves are property and you have to have money to own property so it was only the higher class of land owners that owned any. Therefore also black slave owners in the south that somehow people forget.

The video doesn't mention General Jeb Stuart (Lee's cavalry commander) who decided to go on a grand raid around the Union army instead of providing scouting and security for the Confederate army. Lee couldn't really retreat or maneuver his army because he didn't know if there were other Union troops in the area. Therefore he had to deal with the Union troops he knew about on Cemetery Ridge before others could possibly show up on his flanks or rear. Stuart's cavalry didn't get back to the army until after Pickett's Charge.

I understand why you watched this, but this is just a very very very VERY simple explanation of the battle. There were a lot of desperate moments, many heroic moments, and many tragic moments. The slaughter pen, the wheatfield, peach orchard and Dan Sickle's mistaken advance, the hand to hand fighting in the night on Culp's hill, the suicide charge of the 1st Minnesota, the destruction of the Iron Brigade, there's just so so much about this battle that this summary breezed over

Ultimately, the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery. The U.S. had been developed by using kidnapped Africans who were forced on ships and brought to the Americas (not just the U.S. but all over both North America and South America). In the northern U.S., slavery was not crucial to the economy and those states in the North began to ban slavery over time. But the Southern states relied on slave labor for large-scale plantation farming of tobacco and cotton. So, the South began to fear that the northern states would try to outlaw slavery everywhere in the United States, which would put the Southern states at an economic and political disadvantage. So, the South started the Civil War, essentially, to preserve their slave-based economy, with the wealth that it had brought for many large landowners.

It's much more complicated Than this. The South tried to separate from the U.S. because they waned slavery and North did not. So the South attacked the North. This "battle" started small but the war had already been going with other battles. It was Americans against Americans. Altogether 500,000 died.

The 'Civil War' actually almost happened in 1833, 30 years before this, & it had nothing to do with slavery. The North imposed high tariffs on the South. South Carolina refused to collect the tariffs and threatened to withdraw from the Union, other Southern states threatened to secede with them, President Jackson threatened to send troops to put down the "rebellion". War was only avoided by the Compromise of 1833 put forth by Henry Clay, where the tariffs would gradually be reduced over 10 years. War between the North and South had been brewing for decades. It's far too simple to say the Civil War (called by Southerners the War for Southern Independence b/c the South was trying to gain independence, not take over the Union) was over just slavery. Robert E. Lee, commander of Confederate forces, was an outspoken opponent of slavery. Ulysses S. Grant, commander of Union forces, had slaves working his White Haven plantation DURING THE WAR and declared he was "not an abolitionist" (someone who wants to end slavery immediately.) There were some blacks who fought for the Confederacy, and even some free blacks who owned slaves, some Northerners who fought for the South and some Southerners who fought for the North. Studies examining Southern soldiers letters home showed they believed they were fighting against a Northern invasion of their land, and against Northern tyranny and oppression, not slavery. As former U.S. Navy Secretary and ass't Defense Secretary James Webb wrote, "To tar the sacrifices of the Confederate soldier as simple acts of racism, and reduce the battle flag under which he fought to nothing more than the symbol of a racist heritage, is one of the great blasphemies of our modern age”.

This is a very watered down version of what happened over the course of 3 days, that changed the fate of America forever. It's important to remember at this time there were no good guys and no bad guys. There were just Americans bitterly struggling against each other and the loss of life was unprecedented at that time in history. In some places the war still here is not forgotten and certain transgressions have not yet been forgiven. Robert E. Lee once sad "It is good that war is so terrible lest we grow too fond of it." War is hell.

For the North, the civil war was about ending slavery, for the South it was about constitutional rights for States to self-govern, including rights to have slaves. It came down to whether Blacks were meant to be equal in the lauguage that All men were created equal. The answer is yes, regardless of skin color. The South was wrong.
