For mexicans in México like myself this was a bad movie. Yes, it is emotional BUT it apropiated mexican culture in a bad way for profit. They destroyed the real culture and made it hollywood like. We mexicans we don't see our dead as squeletons, as the "catrina", we see them just as they were when they were alive. We also don't believe in an amusement park of the dead like they show there.

@TheGoodContent37

Tamales are a filling inside of a corn flour "dough" thats steamed in a corn husk form for hours. Im not sure if there's an Indian parallel, but they are delicious but incredibly painstaking to make, hence why Miguel's Abuelita (grandmother) was offended by his refusal.
@Becky-uz8em
@Becky-uz8em Жыл бұрын
I was coming to the comments to explain what tamales are, but you beat me to it! Thanks for doing so! To go a bit further, the filing is usually meat (such as beef or chicken) along with chile sauce. Spicy and delicious!

@Becky1317 I didn't want to get into the filing part, because that is entirely up to preference and regional tradition. Basically, I'd be making enemies regarding what is the proper filling for a tamale the same way as if I described what are the proper ingredients for a mole'. But you're generally right.

The production team did six years of research to make this film, visiting different parts of Mexico to study traditional costumes, music, and customs. They also had a guitar maker build a real life version of the skull guitar, which was really beautiful. Also, Hector wrote Remember Me for his daughter, and Un Poco Loco (A Little Crazy) for his wife.

This movie literally means the world to me. Not long after my mum passed in 2018 I met my then girlfriend (now my wife) who is Mexican. This was the first movie that we watched together and it made me cry because all I could think of was my mum's passing. She was so sweet to me and cuddled me. Then she said if I had a picture of my mum so she could put it on her ofrenda so she could honour her on Día de Muertos (which was only a week away from when we watched the movie). I just melted that she would want to do that. Now that we are married, we always make up our own ofrenda every year and celebrate Día de Muertos. It's a beautiful tradition that we happily celebrate every year together and watch Coco In a way this movie brought us closer together in our early stages of our relationship and I don't know what I'd ever do without the live of my life by my side, and for all that, this movie will always have a special place in my heart.

Being Mexican American, this movie perfectly captures my culture and preparations for El Dia De Los Muertos (The Day Of The Dead). How we decorate the altars, the music, the lore behind the celebration, everything. Also, Dante is a breed of dog called a Xoloitzcuintli (Zoh-loh-eats-QUEENT-ly) or a Xolo, for short. According to the lore of the Day Of The Dead, Xolos were guides to the underworld. Also, a slap from a sandal or Chancla hurts, specifically on bare skin. That's why they're so feared in Mexican culture, especially when they're wielded by an elder. What makes this movie so special to me is the concept of family. On my family's ofrenda, one of the pictures we put up is of my paternal grandfather Marcelino. He died when I was in the 8th grade (2005) and even now in 2023, it messes me up with emotion. Every day, I wish I could see him face-to-face with one last time, give him a big hug and tell him how much I love and miss him. 😢😢😢😢

All mexicans are americans. America is an entire continent, not a country. I'm a mexican living in México and this movie DOES NOT represent perfectly the culture and tradition of the day of the death. If you believe that you are either deluded or very ignorant about the tradition. I live in the very hearth of where that tradition got born. Disney only apropiated another culture for profit and you think it is a beautiful representation. So sad...

I’m Mexican living in Mexico again and this movie production spent a lot of time researching “ the day of the dead “ “ dia de los muertos “ and also the research people spent a long time in Guanajuato City, my city and they did a great job depicting the beauty and magic of the city, I feel and have seen that the celebration varies from region to region in Mexico and it’s silly to just dismiss this beautiful movie as a cultural appropriation, specially when in fact there were no USA people depictions in it , Guillermo del toro made a movie about the same and I loved it too but it did not have Guanajuato City in it , Guanajuato is important to me

Coco touches on a Mexican tradition right after Halloween called Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead. That last song always brings tears to my eyes because if you translate the Spanish. He's Sings "Our love for each other will live on forever in every beat of my proud Corazon" and the word "Corazon" means Heart. So it's literally him singing about how he loves them with every beat of his heart. It's just the sweetest moment especially with the whole scene it goes it. The belief around Dia de Muertos is that those that have already passed will come either way and we place the altar with the food and drinks to guide them to where we are and to welcome them for their visit. It is believed that the aroma from the cempasuchil flower helps to guide them in the journey, which is why is was used for the bridge in the movie. In many places in Mexico, we also decorate their tombs with cempasuchil flowers, candles etc. Also, you can have an altar for Dia de Muertos that does not have pictures in it, as this was added over time with the invention of photography and this tradition is way older. For example, many medical schools in universities make altars for those unknow people that end up in their faculties.

This movie is very special to me. Because I'm Mexican American. And my family celebrate Day of the Dead every year. I've been trying to keep this tradition alive and strong in my family. What I love the most about this movie is that at the year this movie was released we found out that my grandma was diagnosed with Dementia(just like Mama Coco) this moive helped me get through the difficult stages that Dementia does to a person. And when she passed away last year. I watch this moive in honor of her. So I could always remeber who she was and the love she gave. Thats what I love about this Holiday is that it reminds us that the ones we love are never truly gone. So long as we keep their memories alive and tell their stories they will always live on with us.

As a mexican is interesting to see other cultures reaction to that film. EVEN when it is a BAD representation of the beliefs we have of the dead. We don't see them as squeletons or that they live in a amusement park of the dead or whatever BS Disney thought would be cool to show to the world apropiating our culture for profit, but still part of the message is real, sadly only a small part. The squeleton figure of the "day of the dead" is an artistic representation of an artist of the past, it is NOT the way the majority of people and cultures in México see the dead. We see them complete, like they were when they were alive, flesh and blood and everything, as spirits just as many other cultures see their dead. Anyway, hard to fight against Disney to try to make people understand that the mexican culture regarding the dead is way different than what the movie showed, but at least they portrayed the family values more or less in a good way.
