I know this movie got negative backlash because of the short film it was paired with as Latino audiences came to see Coco, not a “gringo movie” like Frozen. In Disney’s defense, they assured people it was only a limited engagement and was removed in future showings of Coco altogether.

I think most Latin family feel very connected with this movie (the love/food, the chancleta, the music, the big family) even more, you enjoy more if you watched in Mexican Spanish. For my, it was a very touching movie, because my late Granma was very look like mama coco. In her last years, she also lost her memories, but the most impressive think for me, was Coco’s gaze. That tenderness was the same I remember of my grandmother. I cried with this movie, but my heart was full of joy. In other thinks, my mother’s name is Elena, but this “Elena” looks like more one my aunt, the “cascarrabias” one 🤣🤣🤣. One my favorite movies of all times.

Listening to Hector tell Miguel not to sing _Remember Me_ at the concert because of how popular it is has a whole new meaning when viewers learn Hector wrote it for Coco and she is forgetting him.

The part when Miguel was shouting at the dog calling him a "dumb dog" was actually an important scene. As Dante was Miguel's spirit guide, he was pulling Miguel's shirt towards going back to Hector because Dante knows Hector is his great great grandfather. Also Dante led Imelda to the pit where Miguel and Hector was thrown into.

The sandal it's called "chancla" in Mexico. In Latin America's culture is pretty common to joke about how our moms used hit us with the chancla to make us behave, so the way they used it in Coco is pretty funny (and accurate). It's funny cause I never heard or a fire hazard caused by an ofrenda/candles in Mexico; gender reveals parties in the USA on the other hand...

Did anyone else notice that Mama Imelda and Ernest de La Cruz are the different ends of the spectrum? Imelda gave up everything she enjoyed to provide for her daughter and family, while Ernesto got rid of everything in his way selfishly to pursue his passion.

Those colorful and beautiful animals are called “Alebrijes”, they’re a mixture of many different kind of animals that represent the four elements; Water, earth, fire, and air. According to our folklore, Alebrijes are guardians that would guide our souls to the afterlife world.

Alebrijes are not actually something Mexicans believe in. Them being spiritual guides in the afterlife was just Pixar taking creative liberties with a very popular type of folk art in Mexico, started in 1930's. Thus the folklore was created like 90 years ago.

Very romantic rendition of your explanation but inaccurate. Alebrijes are modern as Rock and Roll, were brought to this world recently in the last century in Oaxaca for a craft maker. There is another accurate explanation which came from our ancestors in our ancient and original culture. Don't misslead people please.

A small detail most people miss is that De la Cruz's guitar is shown having a gold tooth. This is shown quite clearly as Miguel is comparing the photo to the album cover. Ernesto does not HAVE a gold tooth... but Hector does.😁 This is supposed to be a clue from the very beginning that Hector is the rightful owner of that guitar because of course he would decorate it to look like himself.

Another little detail is the photo that Hector shows to Miguel after putting the makeup on him. You can see in the photo that Hector has a single dimple, just like Miguel, and it's even on the same side.

Fun fact: The creator of Cock said that even though Miguel and Ernesto weren’t blood related Ernesto’s Blessing still would have been able to send Miguel home because they both did genuinely believe they were family. Ernesto was even very protective of Miguel, holding him back when Hector was yelling at both of them, showing us that he really did genuinely care about Miguel. But when Miguel figured out that he poisoned Hector, the little spark of genuine care for someone other then himself, came to a crashing halt. So yeah, if Hector hadn’t interrupted the moment Ernesto’s Blessing really would have been enough to send Miguel home.

When I first saw this movie and heard Miguel singing remember me to Coco I cried and remembered an aunt who passed when I was five (I have 24 now), but now I remember my grandma, sister of that aunt, as well who passed last April like my aunt. I'm mexican, and I can say I'm proud of my culture and this movie reflects it perfectly.

Either Imelda was hurt enough that he'd leave them even for a few months to go touring on the road - even with a toddler it'd be nice to have some help - and thought that he'd abandoned them or she thought he'd abandoned them when the letters stopped coming. In any case she never knew he'd died trying to come back and I guess when she died she just refused to talk to him because "You shouldn't have left in the first place". She's a proud woman and she never let herself cry over him when she was alive because she didn't have the time to, and don't forget, in those days it still would have been shameful, being abandoned by your husband like that, being seen by the rest of the town as another silly young girl who lost her head over a musician who promptly abandoned her.

And for generations that contempt stuck with her. I can imagine, after all she believed him to be a selfish abandoner after all the love they shared when they were together. Being heartbroken hardens you inside and out. I felt bad for Imelda, she went through a lot and was very strong for starting a thriving business despite it. But I’m glad Hector also got justice and forgiveness because it was never his intention to do that to her.

I feel like what everyone likes to forget about this movie, because we grow to like Hector so much, is that he's actually the one Miguel is talking about in the opening story. We think it's Ernesto for a long time and that makes sense(especially as we learn more about him), then comes the twist and most people don't think about the opening anymore or want forgiveness for him because he was trying to go home. But Hector IS that selfish musician that we all didn't like in the beginning, the one who walked out on his family to pursue his dream of music, and you could make a pretty strong argument that him dying the way he did was only because of his decision, so it's not exactly the best defense. Like you could say he deserves forgiveness because he was trying to make things right before he was killed(and I agree with that), but you could also say that him being killed was just another consequence of him leaving in the first place, so it doesn't really excuse anything - which seems to be closer to Imelda's stance, and I can't say it doesn't make sense.

That's why when she said "and I'm just supposed to forgive you?" my immediate reaction was "she's just gotten the info! Give her time to process!"

One of the things that gets me is that when you meet Hector, he's barefoot and he stays that way until that final time we see him. And then we see that his family has made him a pair of shoes. The scene with Coco at the end with Miguel singing Remember Me to help her remember Hector makes me cry every single time. I love this movie and you two had a great reaction!

Also, did you know the voice for young Coco in the flashback is the actual daughter of Gael García Bernal who plays Héctor? That means he's actually singing to his little girl! This movie came out one week after my grandmother died. At her funeral I couldn't really cry I don't know why. But while watching this movie I couldn't stop myself from crying rivers while relating it to my grandmother T.T As a mexican this is my favorite animated movie of all times.

I’m the EXACT same. My grandmother died and I just couldn’t bring myself to cry. I watched Coco a few months later and just bawled my eyes out for half an hour, it felt like she’d just died and I was only now experiencing the grief. Sorry for your loss brother 🙏

As someone who who saw their great grandmother falling to Alzheimer's: my very favorite moment is the joy on the grandmother's face upon seeing Coco, her mother, having a lucid moment. it is a very real moment for me.

This movie has a shit ton of foreshadowing In the Rivera family portrait, although Imelda’s husband (AKA Hector) wore an outfit similar to Ernesto’s, the belt buckle had two guitars on it. Ernesto’s belt buckle doesn’t have this emblem, but rather the symbol of a bull’s head. The faceless man in the photo also has a noticeably thinner body type. When Miguel shows Coco her family photo, and asks her if Ernesto was her father, Coco says “Papa” while pointing at him in their photo but she never said it was Ernesto. When Miguel watches an old video of Ernesto, the camera zooms in on the latter’s hands when he’s playing notes, implying it’s a stunt double. There are only wide shots of Ernesto when he’s merely strumming, hinting he’s not as talented as he appears to be. Frida Kahlo says that Ernesto does not show up to rehearsals, preferring instead to host parties in his mansion, which again demonstrates how he prioritizes attention over music and fans. The same goes for Hector, who complains about that fact. When both speak of this, they speak it in a rather negative tone, reinforcing the fact that Ernesto wasn’t talented in the first place. When Miguel runs away from Hector and Imelda, Dante tugs at him to stop him from going to Ernesto’s mansion. Furthermore, during the argument between Imelda and Miguel when the latter runs away from the former in his pursuit to find Ernesto to get his blessing, Imelda does not mention Ernesto even though she did mention her husband, stating that “he wanted to play for the world”. When Miguel first calls Ernesto his great-great-grandfather, Ernesto is clearly shocked but still believed him. This implies that while Ernesto never married or had any children, he had at least one extramarital love affair and, given the time period and culture in which he lived, was worried about his reputation getting ruined by the accidental conception of a child outside wedlock. This was shown earlier when Miguel claims himself to be Ernesto’s descendant, Hector is noticeably surprised and confused. While this could be interpreted as Hector being shocked at such bold claims, it could also be seen as Hector knowing what kind of person Ernesto is, a womanizer, and his shocked disbelief could be viewed as him thinking Ernesto had a bastard child. Hector states that Ernesto wasn’t very talented. This is proven true when the latter states in the flashback that he can’t succeed without Hector’s songs. The novelization also gives a hint in one of the flashback chapters. Ernesto convinces Hector to go on a series of tours throughout Mexico. During their performances, Hector notices that Ernesto’s singing and playing style shifts between happy and half-hearted depending on the audience size, and realizes that his partner cares more about attention than the art behind music. When Miguel asks Ernesto how he felt about leaving his family, the latter gives a vague response that it was “hard” but he had to follow his dreams. Ernesto does not mention a wife or daughter, let alone Imelda or Coco and possibly he was talking about his parents. Also, he does not show signs of feeling remorseful, foreshadowing his lack of contrition. In the office where Hector is being warned, Ernesto’s poster has a green glow. I could keep going on, but I don’t think I could possibly put every bit of foreshadowing this movie has in a single comment

I watched this movie when it came out and all theater was crying. As a Mexican, I feel this movie did capture a lot of aspects of our culture accurately and that's why we love it. My grandma died a little more than 2 years ago. Now every time I see this movie, it hits different, it makes me miss my grandma and remember all the great and precious memories we shared and all the wonderful things we did together with the rest of our family.

Italian here, I thought for a long period Disney could not do another truly touching movie. Then Coco came out and I instantly considered one of the best movies Disney has ever made. Everything is done so well... the value of family, passion, the importance and respect for elders and deads. Truly inspiring.

This movie is wonderful. It's able to capture the escence of Mexican culture in a very respectful way. Ernesto de la Cruz looks very similar to Pedro Infante and the family of Infante sued Pixar for using his image without permission but Pixar said that Ernesto was inspired in many famous singers like Jorge Negrete and Javier Solis and was never meant to represent a single person

OMG The way Angelina says "Pepita" is so natural, most people can't pronunce it correctly, just a minor comment jaja I don't know if you got the joke, but "Chorizo" is like a sausage, so by saying choke on chorizo, it's like a double meaning, you know what looks like a sausage.

I think its not what it is, dying because you choke on something you've eaten I think would be very sad and not look good to other people knowing the cause of your death. They are making fun of Hector because they think he didn't chew the "chorizo" well and just swallowed it and choked I think. They don't know the real situation on how he died and just laughing over it, that's why I think its very sad on Hector's part.

Hector believed it was food poisoning, but unfortunately, his last meal was chorizo and the moment he said it, those dead people couldn't resist joking about it. It's also known that mexican "laugh about their tragedies".

The Alebrijes here are a mixture of 3 concepts: -The alebrije itself is a kind of figures made out of wood or paper, they were invented by Pedro Linares Lopez after dreaming with them while he was sick on 1936. They're basically colorful chimeras. -The guiding aspect come from Prehispanic believes that said that when you die, you go to the Mictlan (nahuatl culture's underworld) and you are guided by a Xoloitzcuintle dog (Dante's breed) through all 9 levels. Fun fact, if you mistreat a dog during your life, you'll not get assisted in death so you'll stay on the first level forever. On modern altars it's a common tradition to put a figure of a black dog alongside the ofrendas. -And the thing that everyone gets a guide must be based on the Nahual, the nahual was an animal spirit that every person has since birth. The same term is used to talk about Nahual witches, people who knows magic and can transform into their animal spirit, they could be good or bad depending on the situation and personality of the person.

It was a nice touch to reveal at the end that Pepita is a cat when she's in the world of the living. Believed to be guardians of the underworld and protectors against evil spirits by many cultures, it explains her massive size as an Alebrije.

Even including Up, this is the only Disney/Pixar movie that gets me to full on cry. I'm of Mexican heritage, so that must be part of it, but for anyone it's pretty sad. Also beautiful, it's one of my favorite movies. Cheech fading away is pretty sad. One thing I haven't seen a reactor piece together yet is him fading must mean that whoever last remembered him, probably a child or grandchild, just died. The tingles he would get, "feeling" it was almost time, means they were also about to go. It's an interesting way of looking at it, death.

Music has a very odd relationship with people, there are elderly with severe mental degradation (I don't remember if it's Alzheimer or Dementia but it's along those lines) who have lost all ability to really communicate with others and when they play music that the person liked when they were younger there's cases to suggest that the music connects through a different part of the brain that can bypass some of the damaged sections. The end result is that people who have been essentially unresponsive due to mental issues can to a certain extent "wake up" and become responsive for a little while. I found it really cool that Hector uses music to help Coco in a similar way.

Coco is arguably my favorite Pixar film to this date, aside from the Toy Story films. I like the concept of family based stories, they make me feel warm inside and have a knack for tugging at the heartstrings real good. A fun-filled musical Pixar masterpiece this film is!

I’m mexican and my dad passed away on 2017, 5 months before the premiere of Coco, so the Day of the Dead was a special moment for us to celebrate my dad, but you know what broke my heart into pieces? as someone who didn't know a lot of Mexico's celebrates and big shots who have passed away, i was actually shocked to know just one fellow in this video: El Santo. he was a big time Luchador starting in the 40's and became an icon and movie star years after. he is the Silver Masked skeleton heading into de la Cruz's party, the one that takes a picture with the security guard's head. though i have heard there are MUCH more well know people in the Land of the Dead but i don't know them that well, unlike El Santo.

This movie really made me cry cause of coco. She really remind me of my abuela, she’s currently alive but she has dementia and she creates stuff that never happen, but seems like she’s stuck in her late 30s; she always just mention her mother and how she’s waiting for her to get home. But just like coco, whenever we put her music that she use to put whenever I was a kid, she still remembers those songs and sing it so happily. She had a really hard life, and seeing her smile and sing makes me really happy, that’s why coco hit me so much 💕.

I bawl my eyes out every time I watch this. Especially since it came out around the same time I lost my dad, who was also a musician. And it hit my brother even harder because he was a new father to a little girl, so he got it the feels from two angles from this movie. It's a really beautiful story, and I love that they didn't just make his family "the bad guys." They just needed to listen and understand each other better.

The thing is I closely relate to the movie because my grandma has the same memory diagnosis. She would ask where her husband was (he passed in 1998) and she'd ask where her mom was. (Great Grandma passed in 1996). She would constantly ask where mom was or who someone is; addressed me as my mom's name and my brothers as my uncles. She'd also start to sing lots of songs in Spanish out of the blue since she grew up in Mexico but that also caused her to ask when she was going home despite being in the house she bought back in the 1950's. Though whenever her birthday came after she turned 86 she would ask who's birthday it is and be so surprised when we told her it's her birthday and what age she is. She went through a lot, a strong woman literally and figuratively. Music is powerful, it brought her happiness. A favorite of hers is That's Amore. I had shown her this movie when it came out and she absolutely loved it and laughed when Poco Loco came up She recently passed away, but she had the reassurance that she was home. Apparently Disney tried to trademark the Day of the Dead for Coco. Naturally, that was met with backlash, including from Pixar themselves... Coco is a perfect movie in my opinion, but imagine if that had actually happened somehow... that would've soured it a bit.

I think that one of the things I am so happy about this movie is that really highlighted Mexican heritage of Dia De Los Muertos into a Pixar movie. I am so proud of Pixar and Disney for their attempts to include diversity from so many cultures into their current and future projects. It's so important for kids to see their cultures represented in all aspects of media regardless of live action and animation.

Think about it, this movie had a great setup. Mama Imelda could remember her great great grandson (Miguel) but when Ernesto asks later on, "I have a great great grandson?", he doesn't even know who he is. He just played along the whole time and manipulated Miguel. The plot twist makes sense now that I'm watching this a few years later.

When you watch the movie a second time, the entire performance scene with Hector & Miguel hits a bit different, especially when you consider the fact Miguel wanted to earn his great-great-grandfather’s blessing, and he earned it without even realizing it when Hector said he was proud of him afterwards. 😭 Edit: in the scene with Hector & baby coco, the little girl voicing her is the actual daughter of Hector’s voice actor (Gael García Bernal).

I only saw this movie for the first time last year during quarantine. I watched with my four year old and I was sobbing from when Hector sang Remember Me right until the credits rolled. I love this movie. As a South African I had a limited understanding of what Day of the dead is and what it means to Mexican people. This movie brilliantly gave a history/cultural lesson without being preachy. Great reaction from both of you.

My husband and I watch this whenever we need cheering up. Because of this movie explaining to me about the holiday we celebrate it every year. I think it is a lovely custom and I proudly put out our son and daughters pictures, etc. It gives me comfort. On a more amusing note, this film was mentioned in an episode of Welcome to the Basement. One of this hosts quipped that his television collapsed after they watched Coco because of all the beautiful colors and such. That made me chuckle. Coco is a beautiful film. Remember me...

I was very skeptical about it since The Book of Life (also about the Day of the Dead) had come out a few years before Coco and I thought it was just a copy of it. i cry everytime i see "Coco". My grandma have Alzheimer, i visit her every week and yet she don't remember it. She only remembers when her and my grandpa (rip) met, and everytime i have the opportunity i ask her how they met, i love how she tells me like it's the first time I've ever listened to this story because she don't remember telling me the story. She says how they met with a big smile on her face, it's so cute. I'm afraid she is 83 (almost 84), she barely can move and has Alzheimer.

While I am very white and cannot speak to the accuracy of the (gorgeous) representation of the folklore in this, I have to say when Coco heard the music from her father and had a moment of lucidity it reminded me of when my mother and I would visit my grandma in a nursing home after she had reached a point with her Alzheimer's that made it impossible for my grandpa to care for her at home. My mom and I would sing her favorite hymns from church to her and for a while she would have a few moments of lucidity where she could talk normally with us. Seeing the expressions on their faces watching Coco talk about her papa and bring out the letters and part of his photo really hit home for me and got me sobbing.

Coco has such a special place in my heart, aswell as Encanto. Coco makes me very emotional throughout the whole movie cause of how much I love the meaning of never forgetting the ones you love, even if they are gone for a long time, cause they are still family, a family that was loved. The song "Remember Me" always makes me cry cause of how sad and beautiful it is at the same time. Beautiful cause of how much Coco was loved by her dad, but sad cause of how she slowly forgot her father and that if it wasn't for Miguel, that she might've forgotten him completely, unknowingly letting her father fade away in the afterlife. Im just happy how the ending turned out, but the road to that ending made it very clear that Coco is a very very beautiful movie.

Disney Pixar has been giving us great movies even during the pandemic. I loved Soul, Inside Out, Coco, Onwards, Luca and then Encanto. All family related and they all hit me right here in the heart.
