The problem with Indian government is they bring neat and revolutionary laws but when it comes to implementing it they mess it up. What we need is not just laws but strict implementation and education in those rural areas, changing law is easy but changing orthodox mentality that becomes extremely challenging.

@@starjadiancloneinvestigato1772 yes, democracy especially in developing country with lot of diversity can do more wrong then right. As country's leader you might have to make some hard and unpopular decision to improve country but if some politician tries to take such unpopular but necessary step he/she will lose election next time. So even the genuine leader will not be able to take country ahead. Another disadvantage democratic countries have is that every 5 years new party with complete different ideology makes the government and undo all the previous govt development. This doesn't happen in China they can make a long term plan because they know even after 20 years CCP will only be in power. No matter how authoritarian CCP might be one has to agree that their development plan throughout this century was impressive. But for countries like India where opposition becomes road block on every step of development just for vote sake, and people in name of free speech and expression in name of freedom they just work as opposite force of any major changes it becomes hard to move forward. There are 1.3b people in this country and all 1.3b have different opinion and view on any issues, if we start considering all their views with same weight then we can never make a proper decision. Not to mention religiously motivated prescriptive of these people which can never be changed. Subhas chandra bose had a right plan for India when it got independence, he wanted to establish a strict military rule for 20years and once economic and other problems were resolved then democracy could have been adopted. But right from the start we made wrong choices.

As an Indian, I don't think that this interview was impressive in any way. Although, i agree that some of the Indian Asian Boss interviews were good, this is only expressive but the people who were interviewed weren't well-informed, I feel. Especially when some people say in North, who gets married to whom is decided just when they are born. That is very stereotypical, and it's extremely rare. Edit:- I'm from the South, and in South and Maharashtra, these types of stereotypes are there about North. I thought that Southern parts of India had more stereotypes about North (due to geographical distance), but after this interview, I'm sure that Maharashtra has more stereotypical people. I think we need to work on our country's unity and internal tourism to make our people more aware of different regions of our country.

It’s 18 in many countries, which makes sense because you’re considered an adult officially at that age, but the problem is the culture. Asia is just very traditional and get lots of pressure from parents to live the standards of life: marry early, get a child and then hopefully the man will get a good job and take good care of both of them.

A friend of mine was married off at 19. You'd be surprised to know that she's from urban part of the country and studied in a very expensive school and college. Her parents were public employees, one being public servant and other being teacher. The only reason she was married off to her maternal distant 'uncle' was because he was holding a government job(i.e., the secure job) and he is getting out of the unwritten marriage age. He was 9 years elder than her. She was basically forced to marry. With the amount of money her parents spent on her marriage, she could live her whole life without him. What I am trying to tell is, if only she was given time until graduation, she could've convinced them out of it. If only the legal age was 21, she wouldn't have been married. So, it's good for both rural and urban girls(whose literate parents value their daughter as assets.)

I'm sorry for your friend. That's like wtf how is it her problem that he was getting out of "marriageable" age? That's his problem. Indians are obsessed with marriage & give it so much more importance than needed. Besides choosing the age they want to marry and their partners, people should also have the right to remain unmarried if they want. And if they marry they should have right to remain childless if they choose or adopt instead of having biological children. All of this needs to be normalized, but in a country like India that can take centuries. Only a few privileged like some Bollywood celebs have that kind of luxury of living their lives how they want.

They are a very religious family not watching movies etc. So they brushed their responsibility off their shoulder by attaching her to someone they know and has job security after 40 years🤷‍♀. Even if she doesn't study well, it's cruel to marry off a girl who is studying, who has just become an adult to a guy who is concerned about getting married as soon as possible because he is coming to the age of marriage and having children.

Not only recent days but that the case throughout 70-80 years. My question is who are you to decide who's traditional and who's modern. I think it's a classic western divide and rule policy which western countries do in non western countries to divide the society and in a conflict they support the so called modern ones to Westernized that country through their influential organization like western media and NGOs. They are so intolerant and racist that they can't even respect different opinions and values. I mean if you read last 300 years of history one thing you can notice that most of the wars in last 300 years were caused by Westerners because they don't respect other countries culture and religion. Europeans killed millions native people in South America, USA, australia, new Zealand, Canada... Converted them to Christianity due to lack of respect for native culture, religion. Raped million native people to change the demography of the population... Classic example is South America where majority speak Spanish and Portuguese. It's because of European or anglo saxon intolerance for other culture and religion which caused those wars in last 300 years and they are doing the same nowadays through not by wars but through western media and NGOs.

I think as an Indian it's within our culture that parents coddle you. Many often take care of all your needs, they pay your university tuition, and provide fully until you're financially independent. They tend to be over protective and conservative as well, especially towards girls / my sister about leaving the house, or talking to boys. The Indian education system says they're preparing you for the real world, yet they'll completely circumvent the chapter on sex education, and be hush hush about the most important topics one should know before marriage. I did my university abroad in Canada, and was surprised how mature most 18 year olds were, many had to work, earn their keep, take on their own responsibilities at an early age. I felt very behind. I personally don't think governments should interfere in anyone's business, but when I think about my sister, how naive and over-protected she was until the age of 18, I could never imagine her simply handed off to another family before she has even begun to formulate an identity of her own. This is why I think 21 is appropriate, a woman with a degree has leverage and power; she should never feel dependent on a man, nor be written off as a "house wife" without a higher education when she moves in with her husband. From 18-21 I believe she will leave the wings of her parents, and start to develop her own identity; her wants, needs, and aspirations will become clear to her. Same applies to men. You're not just a spouse to be given away, you're an individual, and when you're married, you shouldn't marry your "other half", but be whole, and marry someone who is whole too. This decision is to compensate for our own cultural pitfalls, and not necessarily a statement that people magically become sexually mature / fit for marriage at 21.

I disagree with part of your statement. Being tossed to the wolves at 18 is not being mature. Having a degree also makes you a slave. How do I know? Because most people who own these companies don't graduate college. In fact they drop out. Also while I also disagree with children being married off, I hear that arranged marriages are rare these days especially in India. The government should not be involved in the institution of marriage. Why? Because they'll inevitably turn it into a business. Look at western countries. I do agree that women should have more knowledge of what to expect in a marriage, but divorce also should not be a cash and prizes get out card.

Financial Independence is one of the major impacts of raising the age to 21. If the girl is able to complete her education and set her career, she marries a guy at the age of 21, she knows even if something comes up in her marriage- she can file a divorce. She will be more mature and better at handling her responsibilities. 18 year old girls do not know their rights and are dependent. Hence, they are somehow stuck in an unhappy marriages. Education and this bill have to move forward hand in hand.

Nowadays although in rural areas women marry early maybe around 20 or 21 years of age. But in towns and further up in cities the marrying age has raised to 25 for 27. It's mostly because towns and cities have significant majority of middle classes and upper classes. But again lower class women marry around the same age if they live in city or towns. Which is 24 to 27.

The BEST advice is to get married after you are financially independent. As someone who made the mistake of putting my ex husbands career ahead of my own, always be financially independent. I know people hear it all the time but until you go through it you have no idea how hard it is to be trapped and dependent on someone who you may not be with for your full lifetime.

Marriage never meant love for most of human existence. Parents marry their children off to get rid of a burden (someone else take care of them instead), to gain allies, to get monetary benefits, to have grandchildren, etc. Society decides what marriage means and individuals decide what it means to them as well. You want to be allies with someone, not enemies. How? Marry your son with their daughter, now you're family. You raised your kid until they're 16 and that required hard work and money. You want them to become independent but not alone, so they don't die, what do you do? Get them a husband.

Child marriage isn't that big of an issue in India right now as it used to be like few decades ago. Although it is still prevalent in some parts like in the North and South India. It's becoming rare nowadays. Also I don't see how raising the legal marrying age of girls to 21 is relevant to stopping child marriages in India when already the age of legal marriage is 18 for them. Instead there should be a law against forceful marriages. An adult person who is 18 years of age should be allowed to make their life's personal decisions like marriage without any parental, societal and government hindrance.

As an Indian girl I also think that it is a right step to increase the legal marriage age because I just crossed 18 and imagining to be getting married at such a young age really terrifies me a lot because maybe I am considered as an adult in the eyes of law but deep inside I know that I am still not grown up mentally. 18 is such a young age, women nowadays need to be independent and at least graduated so that they don't have to rely on others for supporting them financially. As a vigilant citizen of India I fully support this bill and I hope it soon becomes a law.

See, First of all, when you live in poverty, why do you want to give birth and make the child suffer in poverty too? When you are mentally and financially ready to get married, then get married. And in India, arranged marriages is so common and parents think that it's a sin to marry the person you like. And marriage is not the solution to anything. Girls and boys should be sensible enough to make decisions and stand up for themselves. And we must marry the person we like not a grandfather who is like a decade older than us. I know I'm just a 16 year old and may have sounded reckless, but I hope one day, we can attain 100 percent literacy rate and make decisions for ourselves and at the same time not give up on our culture.

@@ducko-chan6285 I agree with most things you mentioned. We do have many problems that we need to work upon and most states in the north (esp. UP , where I come from) have a long way to go . In my comment above I was clearly reffering to the stereotypes , some of which I've face myself during my trip down the South (mostly involving linguistic and cultural differences). Besides , I also agree with OP's comment as well , Mumbai might be "mini India" broadly but I would like some Northern (esp. Rural ) representation in interviews concerning PREDOMINANTLY rural/northern problems , these people might be a part of the mini india but from what I see in the interview , a lot of things they believe to be true are actually far from ground realities (not blaming them , they live in a different society). We're not jealous (we do acknowledge people in Maharashtra worked hard their way to the top) We're just asking for a fair representation in interviews like these for a better perspective.

Most people complete their education by the age of 21 in India, although being financially independent would depend on one's own abilities. So 21 being the minimum age required to get married would do a lot good for this generation, but the hardest part is to implement this in society.

This is a good move for the entirety of the country. That is weird how the age was 21 for males and it was 18 for females. It's good to make this change for equality reasons. That is a good point about it being a population control measure. Based on this video, a lot of younger people (under 18 year olds) get married. Having kids that young will lead to complications with the birth and getting married under 18 is more time for them to procreate. There is already an overpopulation issue in the world as it is as well as in India. Besides that, setting the age higher and equal will increase the odds that people getting married will be more certain about it and not get divorced.

1:40 & 2:50 These guy still think of Northern India of 30-50 yrs backward, probably never stepped out of their own state or city. Being married of at early ages mostly happens in rural & industrially backward areas where education & career opportunities aren't so good for girls, it doesn't have to do with northern - southern or eastern - western part. & yes raising the age is good. In urban/educated areas it wont matter as people usually marry after 25 themselves but such is not the case everywhere. Generally a person completes his/her school education at the age of 16-18 so if legal age is raised they will have a higher chance of pursuing higher education or getting a career for themselves rather than being married right after schools previously. It also helps in having better understandings of responsibilities & duties as a person, married couple & controlling population to some extent. However India has already gained 2.1 golden number of population growth so now population won't go to 1.5 billion as previously expected but rather start decreasing from current 1.38 billion, but some states/areas still need to work on it, as they have it close to 3.

Most of my cousins are doing high paying jobs and brothers are farmers. Rural people have become more progressive, while trust me the so called urban people are lacking behind. I know educated people in Bombay living in the richer sides are of such narrow mentality. They've got their child aborted just cause she's a girl. And not just one many like them. Remember, it is not always the parents or relatives who force their children to get married off soon. At times it is the children who don't respect their parents and flee with their loved ones at very young age to get married off. My best friend told me that, her neighbor's daughter ( who was around 14 or 15 ) fled with a boy without muttering a word to her parents... Her parents were deeply depressed and disappointed. They had a big dream of their girl to become a doctor, but the girl claims that since she herself studied in a Government school, she doesn't have any idea about her ambition and her main goal was to settle in life with her boyfriend or by doing Love marriage. Some of the worst cases were from my state ( Tamilnadu ), a school girl fled with her male teacher who was already married. A school boy secretly tied knot with his gf at their classroom. Even today we can see several small kids doing Tik Tok with their bf/gf. Firstly we must provide our children qualified education and emphasize about the importance of education. Or else they would find education just as gaining marks. We must make them understand how essential for us to be well educated and self-employed. Thanks for reading my comment. 🙏
