I had the same issue. I bought a Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX, Premium Quiet Fan, 3-Pin (40x20mm, Brown). Use double sided mounting tape, put some on the edge of the fan and push it into the location where the old fan was. This will mount it and keep it steady, then reconnect. Keep in mind the new fan is 3 pin, and the old fan is 2 pin. Another option is to use a dremel and cut the fan grid exposure to open it up and make the holes larger so that more air can pass through. You can even purchase and cut a small screen to keep dust out.

I saw these new fans have 3 wires. How did you connect the 3 pin harness to the 2 pin connector? Which wire did you not connect?

@@DIYWithIndi I put the 3 pin fan wire into the 2 pin connector on the DVR/NVR board and left one hole on the 3 pin empty. So basically plug in the 3 pin fan connector off center leaving 1 of the holes over hanging the 2 pin receiver. Try leaving the left hole overhanging and if that does not spin the fan, unplug it and leave the right hole over hanging. I forget which one I did, but it worked. They also sell 3 pin to 2 pin adapter on Amazon. Just make sure its female 2 pin adapter connector. I bought one on Amazon and it ended up being a 3 pin female to 2 pin male adapter.

Thank you for this video. I plan on reversing the fan and applying a pc fan filter on the case opening to block dust.

Good idea to add a filter.

Great video. The noise on this thing is unbelievable. How about cutting off the plastic grill obstruction? And while we're on the subject of modifying the case, it's shameful why they didn't build a specific case for this that's 1/2 the size. You would think a security company would be interested in making their products as small and quiet as possible to avoid attracting attention to them.

You are correct about making the case much more compact.

I have the new Lorex 4k Fusion NVR and it's exactly the same casing as this one, just white colored. And yeah, the fan is a bit too loud for my liking. I can see the grille and housing is the biggest culprit. My question is, what exactly is the fan cooling, is it the HDD or the Motherboard itself. I was considering just unplugging the fan and keeping the unit in a well ventilated area, any drawbacks to that. I was also considering cutting the internal fan housing side walls to see if that makes any difference as well. I think the grille forces air to go back in and the inner side walls is blocking that air to move around, thus causing more noise.

I found reversing the fan helped reduce the noise as I showed in the video. Unplugging the fan is probably not a good idea. May be a temp sensor to turn the fan on may be better. I also see there are replacement fans which are quieter, see other comments.

@@DIYWithIndi I also replaced the fan with a Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX, which comes with a 3 pin to 2 pin adapter. This cut the noise by half. I still wasn't happy, so I moved the fan inward 1 inch from the original location and used Gorilla mounting tape to hold it in place. I can no longer hear the fan at all. I now only hear just a whisper from the HDD. I have had no problems with overheating.

Dust is definitely going to be an issue in the long run. May cause damage to your system and harddrive due to overheating.
