I'm going through burnout right now. I feel bad because I burn out from doing less than everyone around me. I don't even work right now, but just processing emotions right now as alot is happening around me, is draining my energy. And my memory has gone to hell.

Don't worry, we all do the amount which is right for us, if I am tired then doing just a small thing could be to much these days. Alot is happening out there and it is difficult to adjust as the situation is changing constantly but we will make it with the help of God He knows our struggles!

I was always told “do your best” and have always taken that as if you’re physically capable of doing something and not literally DYING, you need to do it or you’re lazy.

I'm not diagnosed, but I really needed this vid today. Especially the "be patient" bit. My struggle has been figuring out when it's okay to "push" myself again, because I always get the impulse to "push" when I'm at 75-90% instead of at 100%, and then I crash again within days or weeks. I don't even know what 100% feels like anymore.
@IndieAndy

Aww Alice I feel like it's hard not to push as you do just want to get on with things. To be honest for months, I haven't felt 100% for months especially with COVID and working all the way through that. Think if you are having a good day maybe push abit and when you aren't then don't push as much.

Just to answer to your fourth tip : relying on support network. I have none. Except your channel and our community. It helps so much to be understood, to discover things I didn't linked to TSA and know more about myself, to learn tips or just listen to people talking and thinking like I do. It's so much easier. There is no person with TSA around me, and family, friends always thought I was weird, and they can't understand my way of seeing life, I was diagnosed very late and am a pro in masking, so they think that it can't be that bad or difficult. I feel frustrated and so alone. So I thank you for your work, you and all the community. You're great.

I struggle from but out a lot and always have. I have so much internalized ableism I guess because even though I now know it's burnout I still have to try not to tell myself I'm just lazy. It's so hard to be patient with yourself and not put too much pressure on yourself

I can’t believe how relatable this is. I’m a student nurse on placement and the bright lights intense situations and noises really effect me. I obviously don’t react (masking) but when I get home I’m still on the ward with all the chaos. If anything i under react and talk in mono. when get home I have to turn the lights off and lay in bed for days to get over it. I’ve even called in sick before. I know I’m not depressed or lazy but no one understands. The sad thing is I love what I do it’s just not sustainable. I haven’t disclosed anything of this. Don’t know what to do tbh.
@xgsnapx
@xgsnapx 3 жыл бұрын
Once you finish your placements, could you work at a nursing home? I know it’s not the same as working on a ward. I just wondered if that could be an option as you wouldn’t have to deal with strip lighting or as much noise.

Great tips! Taking a break and allowing yourself time to recover is so important to quicker recovery and less intense burnout if caught in time. I feel like I'm in a constant loop of going full speed until we run ourselves into the ground, have to recover, and go again 😅

OH! THANK! GOD! There's such a thing as autistic burnout? My autism (and ADD and PTSD and OCD and CFS) weren't diagnosed until 10 years ago, when I was 66. I had stuffed 12 lifetimes of advanced education, jobs and careers, life experiences, adventures and dangers and hypervigilance into my life so far. Now I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to urge myself on into a highly-productive life #13 in spite of severe abdominal pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety, CFS, and more. It goes against the grain of my whole lifetime, but I see that I have to step back and learn how to recover.

I've had burnouts that lasted months. :(
@Larry_Stylinson
@Larry_Stylinson 3 жыл бұрын
Mine lasted about two years (it was bad timing really, I dropped out of school in the year that I would have graduated). It was so bad that I stopped going outside for months. I really needed that time to myself and relearn how to stim and find autistic people online who shared their resources and what helps them cope daily, etc. Slowly I got back on track but it was a pain in the arse. I couldn't describe how I felt and didn't have the strength to ask for help or even realise that it was a proper burnout that I was having. All the stress with school and daily life, other people's expectations, etc. just finally crashed onto me and buried me in a rubble that I had to climb out of every little stone by stone... It was the hardest time of my life and I'm trying everything now (over 7 years later) to prevent myself from having any burnouts. I prefer to do rather less than I probably could handle instead of too much that would tip the scale back into a burnout. I stopped trying to please other people and just do my thing and if someone looks at me weirded out because I'm stimming in public then I tell myself that I'm just taking caring of myself and won't see that person again so their opinion doesn't matter. I never really looked people into the eyes but since my burnout I really gave up on it almost completely and that really saves me a lot of distress throughout the day...

I work part time. Im working 5 days this week 4 in a row. And I just found out their actually making me work on Saturday, so I’m working 5 days in a row. I also have some other medical issues making me feel like shit (it’s that time of the month) I know it’s only part time but I feel so exhausted. I feel bad because I feel like if I complain or say I’m burnt out people always say ‘it’s only 5 hours there are 24 hours in a day’. I really hope these tips help me. Because I’m just so tired. And I know I have to work again 4 days in a row next week... I’m sorry for ranting just needed to vent a bit.

Different to most I need to be alone, but I keep busy with to-do lists. Short-term memory loss is a phenotype of HFA, so lists help. Turn off the TV, music only, nothing negative. Stimming is taken.

I need to work on implementing the fifth tip more often than I do, which is to be patient during my times of burnout. The only reason why I find that so hard to do is because the amount of time between burnout and recovery is boring as hell. I don’t have the ability to concentrate on anything, so I just lie around in a boring abyss. Even something as mindless as watching television is a chore for me when it comes to burnout. I’ll try to be more patient. I’m not saying I’ll succeed, but I’ll try. Thanks for the video, Andy!

totally get this- im bored in burnout recovery ... anticipating better days but I know I need patience, cos every thing feels like a chore even listening to music- too over stimltating - on better days I can do very small things but that is not to forget that im probably still only 5%chatrged so needdd to be extra patient and not misintepret a good day for full recovery as this just leads to shutdown and relapse into greater burnout :^.^ thanks for the tips @indie Andy

Am in burnout from trying to manage my sons adhd, autism, and social anxiety and get him help with that and also trying to get him help at school. It’s a constant back and forth, daily, and I wasn’t getting any help with it at home. I am trying to be easy on myself and not expect to be able to do as much as a non autistic person, to leave any brain space open to deal with the important things, and I agree, Stimming more seriously helps. I noticed that I was doing to more on my own and now instead of hiding it as am just going with it.

I usually found out whats triggering the burnout. Mine was a bad choice. I feel less burned out now. I stopped pursuing situations that drained me emotionally and did not improve life situation. My sleep suffers. Even forget to eat.

Thanks Andy, another big trigger for me is slamming doors so one technique is booking a room and travelling to it. If someone is cross and giving ot welly i don't wait till i get upset. I also use a sensory room or go horseriding for the times it's most likely to happen. The last is a bad choice or situation is triggering stress and go on gut reaction. So all good. Stay safe.

I am going through burnout, i have phases of hyperproductivity and then i burnout. I already have a great amount of guilt due to the fact that i do not want a normal job, i want a creative job, where i can be my own boss. Thats how my brain works. But i feel even more guilty by the fact that i need periods of doing nothing productive, and because i struggle with really letting myself do nothing, i feel like this prolongs the burnout due to not knowing how to really lean into the down period.

I’ve expirienced burnout every second semester for as long as I can remember, and I almost always get in a dangerous state and can’t function but school doesn’t give people space to recover so I can’t recover :( so my burnout, like clockwork, comes and stays for months and I only recover by the end of summer and I’m back in school again. Then this year uni took our holidays for covid and my brain literally just shuts down for weeks

IndieAndy no she is going back next Wednesday, worst part is that it took her ages to settle into year 7, just as things were beginning to settle down coronavirus hits! She is high functioning and has developed a talent at masking, unfortunately the effort needed for that ends up with burnout quite regularly! Xx

Now im pretty positive ive been in autistic burnout for a month. Even though its not comfirmed, ill make sure to follow your tips! I hope i can get back to doing homework and going to school soon.
