Recently read a book by Carl Lumholtz a Norwegian Explorer. His book is called Among cannibals, he lived and studied aborigines for 4 years in the 1880's All known aboriginal languages we're known and translated at that time and the highest number in their languages was 3 and any more than 3 was called many.

I went through high school with a handful of indigenous students. I'm not going to say a lot but the deficiency in mathematics knowledge for those particular students had absolutely zero to do with lack of opportunity, lack of teachers, lack of teaching methods or a poor mathematics curriculum. When i was in high school we started with a number of Aboriginal students in year 8. By year 9 most of them had stopped attending and by year 10 I don't remember any of them still attending. I'm sure that's the white mans fault somehow though....

The great thing about mathematics is that there is one correct answer (which might include multiple “solutions”) to each and every problem. The “western” mathematics we study was developed by Greeks, Italians, Arabs, Indians, Chinese, Germans, English.. and plenty of others. If you think the maths is wrong, prove it!

Several decades ago when I was nursing, I had an indigenous patient who claimed to be "King of the Aborigines". He taught me how to count in Aboriginal mathematics: One, two, many, and many-many. And that was all there was to it.

What the hell is "western / colonial math" supposed to be? - The standard numerical system came from ancient asia minor. I dunno, out of pure interest I've looked into dozens of (what are clearly) rudimentary counting systems, from all over the world. I wouldn't quite say "learnt them" is the correct term. Most are intuitive, very bulky, and simply had no intention to be expanded upon, beyond counting. - I also didn't have to pay uni fees. Simple correspondance via a liason got me what I needed, or put me in contact with people face to face. Another poster calls this sort of thing "a scam" and I have to agree. It seems like it. - These sorts of things are well documented already in various refernces; and if you're looking for something specific, people like her certainly aren't gonna be able to help you. Kinda funny actually - My year 6 teacher was Aboriginal, back in the late 1970's. 😃

I had the "pleasure" of working in PNG....a small number of items was called "a sampla"....a sample of....a larger number of items was called "plenty"...no need to count things , if you had plenty!
