I’m sorry for your loss. I was just trying to find. Galileo. By Declan O'Rourke Irish singer ☘️💚☘️💚🔥 Galileo fell in love as a Galilean boy And he wondered what in heaven who invented such a joy But the question got the better of his scientific mind And to his blind and dying gaze He looked up high and often sighed And sometimes cried Who puts the rainbow in the sky? Who lights the stars at night? Who dreamt up someone so divine? Someone like you and made them mine? Love can make you ask some funny questions now and then But just remember the alternatives for I remember when I was lonely and unhappy And my lips were cold as ice But you kissed me, and good heavens Now I'm here in paradise So if ever I'm not kissing you or looking in your eyes I won't be blind, and I won't cry I'll look up high and gladly sigh And thank the guy Who puts the rainbow in the sky? Who lights the stars at night? Who dreamt up someone so divine? Someone like you and made them mine? Someone like you and made them mine? kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6jQlmihqqmKjJosi=LggSvoaK24is-3E_

I rocked my daughter to sleep every night for the first year of her life to this. She is seventeen now, and we saw Indigo girls live together a few weeks ago. When they started playing Galileo, we held each other and rocked back and forth all the way through. It was one of the most profound moments of my life.

This one and “Closer to Fine” are my favorite Indigo Girls songs. I got to see them perform back in 1987 at Manuel’s in Atlanta, before either song was released. They were just beginning to make a name for themselves, and my date and I had never even heard of them. That night it was like my world exploded. I’d never heard music so profound and beautiful, and haven’t heard anything like Amy and Emily since.

I went to my first indigo girls concert because a friend had an extra ticket. It was the Rites of Passage tour. I had never heard of them before. I was hooked. During a particularly difficult era of my life the Indigo Girls music and community quite literally saved my life. I saw them 9 or 10 times over the years. It was Always a positive, uplifting experience. Today I’m a 60 year old happy, contented man. But I never would’ve made it this far without finding the music of Indigo Girls. Thank you Amy and Emily.

I was originally introduced to the Indigo Girls as a senior in high school. Two dear friends of mine were avid fans and convinced me, one cold winter night, to listen to this song. I was hooked after that. In the 13 years that have passed, we've each gone our separate ways. But every time I hear this song, it reminds me of that friendship and how much I cherished it. Remembering the three of us singing three part harmony on it and the disbelief on everyone's faces is priceless. Thank you.

I laughed out loud unexpectedly the first time I heard the "king of night vision" line the first time I heard this song. It kinda comes out of nowhere, and it's at least a little bit corny, I think...Now I uncontrollably weep for 90% of the entire song every single time I play it. Hard to pinpoint a reason, I've also found. I'm no reincarnationist...I know the tears come from the cathartic feeling it arises in me. I think it's a pure unadulterated expression of the beautiful mystery of the human condition. That's my reason, I guess. I dunno. Because of the subjective nature of transcedent beauty, it's hard to define or express to anyone. You just know it when ya experience it, whatever "it" is for you personally...Anyway, thanks for enriching my life, ladies.

You really hit the nail on the head with this post. For some reason I was thinking about all the songs that they used to play at my first job (a department store in the summer of '92 through '95) and this one was the 3rd or 4th one I looked up and listened to this morning. I remember us back in the stockroom making fun of the "King of night vision" line even back then. What I didn't remember....what totally caught me off guard just now was the rest of the song and the emotion it brought fourth in me 28 years later (My God where has the time gone?!). It is incredibly insightful and really a damn good song. But I am having a hard time explaining to myself just why I had to wipe my eyes and face before typing this comment!

This had always been one of those songs that I either sit quietly & listen to, or sing at the top of my lungs. I have cried.... Closer to Fine makes me cry now that I’m older. Mom of an adult, parents dead, 11 surgeries, defeated cancer, a million losses it seems of loved ones..... it gets me. But I’m grateful I’m alive with a great hubby & son. That’s what makes me Closer to Fine.

There’s a moment in the video that really gave away what this song is about, at least my interpretation of it. It happens quick, right at the 1:41 mark, immediately following the line “how long till my soul gets it right?”, she looks up real quick exposing a quick flash of anger, like she is sarcastically posing this previous lyric’s question to god…because she feels like she’s doing a pretty good job and she doesn’t know what else to do, presumably. And I concur with her conclusion on that and commiserate with that exact feeling captured on her face-a slightly disgusted anger at having to ask the question in the first place-in that quick instant. 1:41. I love that moment. Seeing that and recognizing what I think was going on in that moment-I see it every time now. I wait for it. I rewind it and watch it again and again. It happens so quick. Take a look for it. 1:41.

Fairly irrelevant to this song, but funny thing about Galileo: his failure to take criticism put astronomy back a couple of centuries. The Catholic Church actually had a valid reason for its initial criticism of Galileo and it isn't what anyone things it was. It was the fact that there was no visible parallax; that is, his heliocentric model of the solar system didn't show the outer planets appearing to move relative to the background like you would expect if the Earth was moving so much (AD 1614). The ultimate answer to this could have been found in Nicolas Cardinal DiCusa's work (AD 1460): that the stars were so unimaginably far away. Had he reconciled DiCusa to Copernicus (AD 1514), he'd've gotten an incredibly accurate, 20th century view of the universe. But instead he called the pope a simpleton (AD 1633), gave the church the middle finger, and prompted a centuries' long conflict between inductive and deductive reasoning that is pure garbage.
