Indirect Questions - Make Requests and Offer Subtle Suggestions

I'm Andy from S.Korea. I like your way of teaching English, especially the lessons that deal with the intonation and the way of speaking. I must say they are really one of a kind; very special and unique. I used to be a English teacher myself. But since I changed my career, I basically stopped learning English. So now I forgot lot of English words and phrases and more importantly lost confidence in speaking English. I've just started learning it a few weeks before. I feel quite rusty while I'm writing this comment. But your lessons makes me encouraged and motivated to begin the journey of English learning again. It is normal to go through phases with your language skills, so be patient with yourself! In the past, my spoken fluency in Spanish really went downhill, but it came back when I had the opportunity to use the language more. It's all part of the journey! I have been studying English for more than 6 years but my problem is still my listening 🎧. I practice by watching You tube videos or movies. What should I do with the intonation if question consists of two sentences? For example: I wonder whether you had finished chore when I called you yesterday?

If you want to sound questioning when using "I wonder" statements, you can "hit" higher pitch levels on the focus words, as well as a slight or steep rise after each thought group. You could also end the statement with a slight rise, like a yes/no question. Here's one way: I WONder / (slight rise) whether you had finished your CHORES / (high rise) / when I CALLED you YESterday? (highest rise) To sound more uncertain, you can use a higher pitch on the capitalized syllables than you would in neutral speech.

This is a great opportunity to offer a suggestion using an indirect question. I encourage you to rewatch the examples at the end of the video (they start at 8:26). You can introduce your request with one of the questions at 3:54 or statements at 4:37.

I had a akward situation with client on phone due to card decline he staeted cursing bad words and yelling I said please keep calm and he turned into animal more agressive he ended up hanging up the call.what is the best strategy in this case?

Unfortunately, when you tell someone to "calm down" or "relax," it usually has the opposite effect. For more context, there are tons of articles and discussions about this on Google: www.google.com/search?q=why+you+shouldn%27t+say+calm+down Handling angry people is challenging, but usually people just want you to listen to what they have to say. Asking them questions and reassuring them that you're going to find the best solution are two ways to help diffuse the situation. I encourage you to ask your coworkers for tips as there may be best practices at your workplace.

You can use indirect structures like this one to create a little distance from your actual opinion. Sarcastic or critical comments may be hidden inside indirect language.
