The winter season of the Korean War part is true. You cannot believe how cold the winter is in Korea. Was in the 2nd Infantry Division (US Army) for my winter over experience. You earned that title of "The Frozen Chosin." Not Chosen it's Chosin, a word that was used for the nation of Korea long time ago. Once spent a winter week on the Han River. So cold that if you left your hot coffee out too long you got a coffee flavored ice cube, rickety-tick.

Another funny thing about being in the 2nd Infantry Division is that you are a turtle. The story about the turtle is the 2nd ID's personnel replacement detachement was at Camp Casey. There was two quanset huts in the middle of the fenced off compound. Everybody spent two days of in-processing before you went to your new unit. One was in-processing the other was out-processing. The doors to these quanset huts were 18-feet apart. So it took one year to go 18 feet. Thus you are a turtle.

Haha, I remember when my Battalion got issued IMTVs after our first deployment. You've never heard so much bitching in your life. A bunch of guys got in trouble because they wore the old plate carriers (they weren't supposed to have) on a hike and some O-4 noticed and gave them an ass-chewing. I definitely wasn't one of them. Nope, not me.

This is one thing the army is good about. Officers send NCOs to do corrections unless it’s an officer making the mistake. An NCO will give you shit until you say “my commander authorized it” at which point NCO fucks off because he got drug into an officer fight. In the army, you’re an E8 or E9 before you start fucking with other units. Maybe a ballsy terminal e7. And it’s very rarely Infantry. Usually the soft skills are hyper focused on garrison tasks. Plus we’re taught to mind our own business because of things like “Command authorization”. It’s kinda fun to be able to tell an E9 giving you shit about your uniform “Well my commander authorized it SMaj. You have to take it up with him. I’m just following orders. At which they usually try calling the Battalion SMaj, who tells them to stay in their lane. Seen it happen, have had it happen to me, and had a smile on my face the entire time. The best argument I’ve ever seen was two E9s bitching at each other, because one SMaj walked past our battalion area and started SNCOing and smoking guys. My SMaj shut that shit down, in front of the Joes. “You wanna on the spot correct my guys? Let’s go see what 1/14 looks like? I’m gonna find some deficiencies.” This progressed to the point where guys called IG on both of the E9s for the games they were playing and using Joe to accomplish this. They were doing dumb shit like stealing sand out of the motorpool from each other. Division SMaj, from what I heard from his driver, had them both on the carpet smoking their balls.

Concerning the Vietnam era M-1 helmet: A big concern a lot of GI's had about the chin strap was that an enemy could come up behind you, grab the helmet, jerk it backwards conceivably snapping the neck in the C1-C3 area of the cervical spine causing instant paralysis and/or death. Hence, the breakaway chin strap & the nape strap on later M-1s.

Very good video. I served with E. 2/6 during 1998-02 and discharged in 2005. I got to see VAST transition between PASGT, MOLLE, MARPAT, WOODLAND utilities and boots from recruit training all the way to modern issue boots. In boot and first entering FMF we were issued the much hated Moon Boots aka Commandant boots along with all black jungle boots. Jungles were preferred but I always liked the full speed lace up leather boots myself. In ‘98-‘99 we had PASGT flaks with the old skool LBV’s. Those were great. We also were issued the awesome medium rucks. The ones with the LCV frame. Couple of us us had the large mountain rucks. Beginning in 2000 the transition to the much hated and POS MOLLE started. All of our 782 gear was reissued and broke constantly. Only thing that was suitable was the web gear. Everything sucked dick. Point to remember is with around 2000-02 the early Intercepter vests sizing were fucked up to say the least. At that time I wore a small and the carrier could not and would not accept small SAPI plates. The medium vests fit the small SAPI plates and so on. So us small guys got away with not carrying another 10lbs of kit. After ‘02 that problem was corrected before Iraq kicked off. Fast forward to MARPAT a survey was taken USMC wide and 90% of marines voted for the Tiger Stripe pattern. The Commandant at the time chose to rip off the Canadians and go with the pixel pattern. Why we had a survey then is beyond me. Sergeants we the first to start being issued the new MARPAT around 2003 until stocks caught up with demand. We were allowed to wear our woodlands and black boots until 2004 whereas total conformity in 2005 for the new uniform. Our OEF pump in ‘02 we went in with our black boots and by the end of deployment we all had been issued desert boots. OEF 2002 we still had the desert 3 color woodland design with those HUGE ass collars. We were issued boonie covers and the 8 sided covers were almost non existent. I think a couple officers in the S shops wore them but boonies were essential on the line in Dubouti because of the unrelenting sun and heat. Great video.

When you’re Army and you know that shit got stuffed into a duffle bag until it was time to rotate back to the states. Idk why there is such a culture difference between Army and Marines. You guys LOVE your body armor. The army sees it as a burden, culturally. You guys wear it to drive in a truck. And the airborne harness system is probably an admin decision. My thoughts? Guys were losing helmets from not strapping them down, they blamed the chin strap, command gave them a chin strap that won’t fall off. You have to think Infantry is Infantry, and that seems live a very Infantry solution. “Oh you wanna lose your shit? Well I’m gonna tie your shit to you so you don’t lose it”.

WWI was the kind of war we don’t have lately. Combatants huddled in cold dark muddy trenches with lots of other guys in uniform including the enemy. All engaged in a protracted war of attrition, all men in uniform desperately trying to keep dry and warm. The primary activity is to avoid death for as long as possible! Somehow, I don’t know if a modern utilitarian camouflage type uniform with all the modern accoutrement would make much difference.

The Current Armenia and Ukraine conflicts/wars have some elements of that. If WW1 standard infantry had the most modern issued gear there definitely would have been a drastically lower casualty count.

I keep puttees with my kit. I also use a steel Ww2 canteen. Other guys in my unit poked fun at me being a young man wearing old gear, but the jokes stopped after the snow fell. Great content as always Brent.

Interesting. I know a couple guys who were in Desert Storm, they all got 6 color desert camies but no desert boots.

Brent I have one of the original Army Experimental vests with front and back plates. I picked these plates up from Fort Gillium Georgia years ago on an equipment run for the KSP. These vests, boots, fatigues, night scopes ect. were in the shipment I picked up. The C.O. told me to take one for use. There were a couple cases of plates and vests. So me and another officer tested these. 30-06, 308, 7.62x39, 5.56 ,300 WM plus several pistol calibers. Not even a bulge on the back side of the plate. This was on one plate. The pistols did nothing very little in the front side. If you are interested in pictures of the vest and plates or whatever, let me know and leave contact info. Great video as usual. Keep'em coming!

Thanks, Bruce and I will do a video on these sometime this spring or summer. If you have IG you can send those pics to me and I may incorporate them in that video if you're good with that.

Good stuff! My Grandfathers Uncles and My dad were all Marines serving in WW1, WW2, KOREA AND DAD VIETNAM. I went in after high school in 1987-1991. I used all Vietnam era Allis gear! Canteens, M-14 mag pouches. Rook sack or butt pack. But I used a M-12 NYLON flap holster. Better than the leather ones. We were issued M-1 helmets in 1989 we were issued German kavlar helmets. I hated them. I wore my boony hat all the time or my Marine cover. I was 0317 Recon sniper so I didn't have to stick to the rules. It be me and my spotter, once in a while my 8 man recon unit! My Web belt I bought my self at the PX came with the plastic buckle. The dam aluminum buckle would break! Dad's WW2 buckle broke to. He put heavy wire on it as a hook. In 1953 his Gunny said now you give the meaning to Improvise, adapt, and over come! His Lt. Said replace it Sgt. Dad said so it breaks again Fuck that! In cub and Boy scouts we had the old Vietnam era Web belts to 1975 -1987. I loved the Allis Web gear the best. Shoulder straps to. The New Marines and Navy Seals have better and lighter stuff. Great show Marine devil dog Simper Fi Marine!
