One thing I noticed about MEQ-X is that one can simply load the target curve files (eg. Harman Target) and Audyssey wll track surprisingly close to the curve. I tried the Storm Audio curves as a test and my LCR's matched the curves really closely, and MEQ-X automatically applied the low frequency rolloff. Not sure what method Audyssey uses to match the curves, but I plan to A-B compare the results with that method versus the trace arithmetic method that you have been using.

Yeah, you could EQ your system to flat, then upload a target curve and it should match perfectly.

Hello Mr. Carl. Another great video, i appreciate your work and the patience to explain how you do the things. For what i watch you only take the measurements at MLP, if´m correct, so please let me ask if you think is a waste of time taking multiple measurments? Thanks. Greetings from Portugal.

Thank you for another great video. I have used your method for my speakers and have been very impressed. Not having luck with subwoofer however, with lack of ability to independently control the subwoofer gain its proving difficult. I think a MiniDSP might be in my future. Curious what your workflow is for subwoofer cal using REW & Minidsp.

I also went back to MiniDSP. I may even give the ultra-high-end version of MiniDSP a look. It has even more resolution.

If starting from scratch then yes separates cost more or same as equal capable avr...but in 4 years when you want latest and greatest features then you only buying half the equipment since amps will last WAY longer and don't change.

First of all thanks for the comprehensive guide. I was able to get everything done in two hours except the subwoofer. How do you SPL align the sub to the target curve (which frequency)? If you align the curves at 1kHz where the sub obviously isn’t capable of producing any sound you will heavily tone it down.

I might make a video about this but, pink noise from a subwoofer is 30hz to 80hz so the center frequency is 55hz, atx86.

Excellent Video. I was going to ask your opinion on Inversion vs EQ. OCA in his Audyssey A.R.T. video used EQ, but he also had frequency dependent windowing. Inversion, in my mind, makes me think that is all taken into account when measuring. Overall, I'm afraid of boosting a tweeter to the point where it gets fried. I have a 7.1.4 Auro Setup where it is to Auro-3D spec and my heights are pointed at my standing height above my MLP. Thus far, my calibration attempts haven't been successful blending some of OCA techniques without MultEQ-X and just the phone app. I'll give it another go this weekend. Also, would you care to share your Harman Target Curve?
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 9 ай бұрын
I know what you mean Mike about the Tweeter. I've been doing this method for about 6 months, and I haven't blown anything yet. However, you could only EQ up to 15K if you thought it was going to be an issue.

Sorry to disturb you sir but pls if you could clarify a few of my questions I would b really helpful....actually i asked these to OCA but he seems to be offline n didnot reply as yet..... ......just a couple of simple questions... 1. Are these *Creating EQ filters* methods same as methods of EQ filteration shown in the videos---- *Measuring Height Atmos Channels and Measuring Atmos Manual Callibration*--- in these videos you manually enter the Graphic EQ generated data by Optimasing gains into your receiver for each channel upto 16000..... Q2. What is the difference in manually entering the data(such as speaker distances,speaker levels,crossovers,graphic eq filters etc.) into the receiver and creating target curves for each speaker and then exporting that data as adv file thru multi eq editor app into the receiver??? I hope both my questions are clear to you... Reply soon...thanks😊

Hey, yes, this is the same method as what OCA is using. I copied his method; it's excellent. I believe that target curves in MQX are better than PEQ filters. I've never seen PEQ filters work as well, and have as much detail as target curves in MQX app.

I just picked up the SACT blu ray as to me that seemed the easier method personally, for the calibration. Did you find you still got good results using their test tones when you did your individual speaker calibration? And when you were all done did you just level match them all using an SPL meter? And set the speakers to a certain DB? Your videos have easily been the most detailed and easiest to follow I’ve ever watched, they’ve given me a real confidence I can do this on my own system. What really struck me is you made a comment “if you turn Audyssey off and your system sounds better you have an issue” I have always felt my Revel Performa3s have underperformed after calibration with Audyssey, I just happened to try and turn it off and immediately noticed an improved difference.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 8 ай бұрын
I did yes. I've been using their full range pink noise for some tests. I don't use the SPL meter per se. I use an RTA and measure the average volume. I feel as though I get better results that way vs SPL.

I think I see how you could use the OCA files to generate "EQ" curves for the Atmos speakers, but how would you use REW to confirm? Great video by the way. I have a very good sounding calibration right now using auto EQ and importing a Harman target curve, but the next time I feel a need to tweak, I want to try this method.

I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos. I have a basic question regarding MultEQ-X. Once a file has been imported to a speaker channel, how would I remove it back to zero. It seems that when I want to fine tune a file and re-import it, it adds on top of the original.
@hdmoviesource

Oh right. Yes, you have to load the file, and X the file out, and remove it from that speaker.

So you can load target curves into Dirac, but it doesn’t work like it does with MultiEQ-X. I followed this process and input the target curve into Dirac. Instead of correcting my frequency response to match the desired Harmon curve, it match my response to the correction curve I input.

Really? Yeah, I've been checking out a few Dirac calibrations and I was thinking, I don't think this method is possible. Can you import an FIR filter? Because that's essentially what this is. I'd love to mess with Dirac for about a month just to see what I can do. Some how I think Audyssey lucked out this system, and now the ultimate way to calibrate speakers. Can you import EQ? With Dirac?

@@hdmoviesource so I followed your instructions. I varied them a little bit. I have an Emotiva processor that has Dirac. However Rew can import and export directly into the XMC2 from the equalizer tab in rew. Worked like a charm. It sounds awesome. It’s not quite as good as Dirac. However I’m a tweaker with a passion just like you. I will have a calibration that beats Dirac within a month.

In one video, you showed how you only downloaded the frequency range you wanted. Whereas, in this video, you are downloading the full range, then overriding the amounts to 0 up to the range you would have originally downloaded. What's the difference in having 0's from 10 to 50 Hz vs just downloading and loading 50Hz and above target curve?

Typically, from what I've seen the curve doesn't finish correctly if you don't explicitly say zeros. I do have a easier way of doing this without a spreadsheet though.

Here's my correction file, what you can do with this file is copy and paste points of the target curve that you want no influence. No influence is setting the target curve to 0. Learning a ton from your videos. But I'm still struggling to find an answer about setting a subwoofer low pass. Howcome there's no mention of this with respect to how it interacts with the mains highpass of 80Hz? It just looks like you're smoothing out the natural high end roll-off of the subwoofer, regardless of the bass management settings. Why is that? I've typically created a custom low-pass and applied it only to the subwoofer, based on the L+R target/predicted roll off/high-pass frequency. Is this the wrong approach?
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 4 ай бұрын
The subwoofer HPF for LFE should be set to 120hz, and the crossover for speakers should be set to the performance of those speakers. Most of the times 80hz works well for crossovers, but others like 90hz to 110hz can work well too.

My surround back speakers which are identical to my LCRs end up with a totally different "export".... as in negative gains stop at 157hz where as LCR are @around 80HZ...and rollloff at around ~17k. Rears show rolloff at around 10k. At 80z the rears show gains of +6ish which seems like alot. Also the rears bounce around postive/negative (mostly positive) gains all they way from 157hz up. Not sure how to edit these exports for import into MultiEQ-X. Any idea why this might be happening? All 3 LCRs pretty much came out similar to eachother. I have tested swapping speakers around and in the LCR position they all behave pretty much same so dont think its bad speakers. I think its something about the position in the rears but seems extreme....nothing odd about their position except a foot or so higher than the LCR due to riser. These are PSA MT110 "bookshelves" which are huge.
