The High Speed Rail needs to be extended to Jakarta Airport (probably go underground). Or At least extend MRT to both the Halim Whoosh and CGK stations. Currently you have to take 3 different trains- Whoosh, LRT and Airport rail. No one with luggage is going to take 3 different trains. One way could be Whoosh extended on existing Airport Rail tracks and travelling at regular rail speeds within the city. It would still be more convenient as passengers wont have to change trains. Currently if you land at CGK and want to go to Bandung taking a "travel" van is more convenient.

It's indeed completely inconvenient to travel three modes of transport. Heck, I live relatively near the station in Jakarta and would need another 2 to get to the airport. A travel or bus is just so much more easy than needing to transit once or more. Maybe there's a direct bus to Halim station from Soetta? Not even sure! If not, there should be. Having the HSR running on ARL tracks is not possible, they're a different gauge. Building an underground section to the airport would be too costly I suppose. Guess we're stuck with the Jakarta end as it is for the time being.

Unfortunately it isn't maglev run train. I don't think they can make top speed since the danger of derailments

This train does reach top speed for a few minutes, but the route isn't very long before it goes into mountainous area where you can't go top speed because of the slight curves and tunnels.

The planned were to connect phase 1 towards yogyakarta, so it was most likely not go towards tegal and semarang because the Indonesian government insists on developing South Java more than North Java, and if the planned were not change, The north java future HST will be using fully independently made rolling stock by Indonesia.

Yeah, I've read that the preference is the southern route via Yogya, but if you ask me, even with semi-HSL being achieved on the regular tracks, focus should be the northern coastal route. In this way you can move people away from using the car/bus/plane on one of the most busy routes in the country. We'll have to wait for any feasibility study and I hope they do a proper survey for both routes.

@@johanstravel I might miss something but as far that I understand and what many public announcement from the government and some studies that already done, the reason why the government didn't planned to depending on upgrading all southern line to semi-HST standard, is because they are many alignment that wouldn't able to be upgraded to semi-HST standard unless they build entirely new alignment, and if they insists to go semi-HST the cost will be similar as building actual HST. As far that I know, only northern line that have been proposed to be fully semi-HST standard, and only small number of southern line between Kroya-Yogyakarta-Surabaya that have been proposed to be upgraded to semi-HST standard. The northern HST project is exist but that project is separate project as far of my understanding, because it will using locally manufactured HST rolling stock from Indonesia.

the only study done is about a decade ago by JICA. But they didn't get the project (obviously). Jokowi himself said recently that the Chinese would do the study as it needs to be done fast and Indonesia would not be able to do that. I'm sure there are other studies though, but not an actual one for the extension of the current HSR, as that's only a recent thing. I think that's what they're looking for now. I've also read about those southern line upgrades to 160km/h on sections. That's nice of course, but those sections are pretty limited. I assumed the northern semi-HSR is just KAI operated? Would they order new trains for that now they're upgrading the trains to 3rd gen? Also, slower and faster trains on that track... needs a lot of planning and limits usage of course.

@@johanstravel they are separate study done by KAI, and assuming the government want the easiest and cheapest way, they are some sections on southern line that able to be easily upgraded to semi-HST standard and the progress actually already underway. As for the rolling stock, unless the electrification already fully completed on all line, they will use existing 3rd gen Loco hoult rolling stock until all line are electrified.

@@johanstravel Yes the president already said they will use Chinese Study on the extension toward Surabaya, but as mention they are separate planned, if I remember correctly the current HST was part of Java southern HST line, reason behind that because South part of Java have way more rail traffic compared to North line due to many branches and increasing demand, in my opinion it will be more beneficial to bring that HST towards South because as government said, it will bring more benefits specially they serve Yogyakarta and Solo which the most visited regions on Java outside of Bandung. Even the minister of foreign investment "Luhut Panjaitan" Before the announcement of accelerating the visible study with China, He Mention on media that the first phase will focus on Tegalluar to Yogyakarta, and the then second phase will be Yogyakarta to Surabaya.
