To be fair, the world's population should pay Indonesia, so that wild forests in Indonesia can continue to be maintained, because the world's population also get benefit from these forests for centuries. The irony is that these called "environmental warriors", still using petrol motorized vehicles for transportation, still use electricity supplied from the power plants they are protesting against instead of using their own solar or wind energy either in their offices or homes. 9:40. It is impossible to use wood or anything else more valuable than coal to replace coal. The reason why Indonesia and other countries still use coal energy is because of the cost. The cost of using coal for energy is the cheapest, even when compared to water or solar energy. The truth is they use waste wood or waste from anything else that contains carbon. This way, the cost is cheaper and the supply is renewable.

Spending $12 million on a 300 kW power plant is an exorbitantly high cost. For that amount, you could easily invest in a solar-plus-battery system, which costs about 18 cents per kWh or approximately Rp. 3000 at the current rate. Solar systems are generally easier to maintain than biomass power plants. However, considering the diesel power plant is already operational, it might not make sense to fix something that isn't broken. Instead of focusing on reducing the carbon footprint in these remote areas, targeting a 1% reduction in larger cities would have a significantly greater impact (1000x). Remote villages face more pressing issues, such as poverty. Encouraging NGOs or the government to donate gravity lights can provide continuous lighting for studying, which can gradually transform lives through education.

Solar + battery is so cheap now and even getting cheaper day by day, it will be a much easier solution to install that. A 3MW solar costs about 2.5 million and requires 12 acres of land. In Indonesia on an average it will produce 12 Mwh of electricity everyday. A Tesla megapack which is 4 mwh costs only 1 million now. So if you install 2 of them then you get 8 mwh of storage. For a total cost of 4.5 million or say 5 million, you get 12,000 units everyday which can be used anytime. If you get 10 Starlink terminal for the island, you can get high speed internet without any wires for the island. The solar panels will work for 30 years and batteries will work for more than 20 years with no running costs and negligible maintenance cost. If they have some e-bikes and few EVs, they can be totally independent of the world. They can still grow bamboo and sell them by making some useful products. This solution is carbon negative and people can make money instead of burning bamboos. Burning bamboos will still produce toxic fumes besides CO2, like CO, NoX and other chemicals. I increasingly see carbon not as the enemy. I think most of our altered temperature / climate is due to land use, and not necessarily carbon. The urban heat island effect is real, and turning green plant cover into tilled soils or parking lots interrupts the water cycle and changes weather patterns as well as increasing temperature. Net carbon in the atmosphere will actually make plants greener. When you have a greenhouse, optimal growing conditions are 1600 ppm, and a lot of serious greenhousers add c02 to their system. The idea that carbon will mean the end of humans is wrong. But if we turn all of our land into tilled, dead soil and parking lots we will have severely disrupted weather patterns. Land use is much more important than carbon.

Feels like all those villagers really need are some solar lights.
@tonychen766 ай бұрын
Solar lights are not enough. I am Indonesian and I live in a village. Everyone wants grid electricity. Solar lights are used, but only as a minor addition to grid electricity. In places with no grid electricity village residents will pool their money to buy a diesel generator and fuel and run it every night. If you give us solar lights we'll take it and use it, but that doesn't negate the demand for grid electricity.
@chrisb93196 ай бұрын
@@tonychen76 then buy more solar. There is plenty of roof space available.
@tonychen766 ай бұрын
@@chrisb9319 Here's the thing. The ones with money, the ones in big cities where solar panels are easily available, they have grid electricity. A few of them bought some. But plenty are satisfied with grid electricity. The ones in remote villages, the poor farmers and fishermen, they don't have money to buy solar panels. And remember that we don't need just solar panels. We need the batteries, the controllers, the inverters, and so on. Short version is: they can't afford it. So they fall back to grid electricity. Our government really tries hard to provide grid electricity to everyone.

@@tonychen76 They don't have to afford it. There are micro-grid solutions out there. Look at the youtube channel "Africa GreenTec" for example. They deploy shipping containers full of batteries and solar panels to villages that don't even have any grid to begin with. And then they sell their solar electricity to the locals at a lower price than they would have to pay for diesel. This could be done on every island in Indonesia too. And I bet that many islands could supplement this with small hydro power.

I'm confused, does energy plantation not produce these "carbon sinks" if so why criticize it? i understand from a biodiversity standpoint it would be inferior than rainforests but this documentary talks an awful lot of carbon neutrality and not show data for the proposed solution by the indonesian energy plantation. Mind you i agree that renewable energy (solar, wind, tidal) is way better, but if this can be a stopgap for developing countries (renewables are super expensive upfront) as long as they are commited to switching to renewables in the future, why not?

It's a highly inefficient process of converting the sun's energy (through photosynthesis) to electricity. The extracted energy/kg of sugarcane is very small with this method, also means that you need a lot of land. The less step you can do to convert something to electricity, the better it is. That's why burning coal is still the cheapest way to get power since you simply pick up the fuel from the ground and burn it.

@@hitthedeck4115 it's cheap but didn't align with the green propaganda those leader said. It's inefficient through solar photo but it's enough for house uses.
