Indonesian artefacts repatriated by the Netherlands now on display in Jakarta

Hundreds of Indonesian artefacts, which were in the Netherlands for more than a century, are now on display at the national museum in Jakarta. They are among the latest batch of items returned following a lengthy process involving both countries. CNA's Chandni Vatvani takes us through some of the prized possessions in this final part of a series on Indonesia’s ancient treasures.

This is truly moving; the artifacts stolen and looted by the Dutch are finally coming home to Indonesia. 🥲 After spending over a century in the Netherlands, and following decades of requests for their return, they are back where they belong. Some of the individuals who worked tirelessly to make this happen may no longer be with us, but their efforts were not in vain. 🙏 Since their return, I’ve visited the National Museum a couple of times and am pleased to see significant improvements following its reopening. The museum now features better displays, lighting, and signage. As Indonesians, we often doubt our institutions’ ability to preserve and safeguard our heritage, but hopefully, this marks a promising new chapter for all of us. A heartfelt thank-you to those in the Netherlands who kept these artifacts safe during their time there. Moving forward, I hope we can continue to count on cooperation and support, not just from the Netherlands but from around the world, to care for our cultural treasures. There are still many more artifacts out there, and we patiently await their return one day.

British Economic Exploitation and Forced Labor: The British were known for their large-scale exploitation of resources in India, Africa, and Malaya. Systems such as indentured labor and forced labor in mining or plantations were common. Famine and Poverty: In India, British policies that prioritized food exports to Europe led to massive famines, such as the Bengal Famine of 1943, in which millions died. Violence and Oppression: The British used force to suppress rebellions, such as the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which was followed by harsh punishments and mass killings. Who Was the Most Cruel? The Dutch are often considered the most cruel in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, due to systematic exploitation such as the Cultuurstelsel. The British are remembered for their deliberate famine in India and their crackdown on rebellions. The French are often criticized for their cruelty towards indigenous Africans and their policies of cultural coercion. In conclusion, the Dutch and British are often seen as more exploitative economically, while the French are more repressive culturally. However, the degree of cruelty depends on the historical context and the area being colonized.

As an Indonesian, I'd rather they keep it until we can get our act together when it comes to artifact conservation. Maintenance and storage are huge problems here. Last year, a part of the national museum burned down along with some artifacts. Smuggling is a problem too. We have had a _lot_ of artifacts mysteriously end up in the Port of New York this year. We didn't even know those artifacts were stolen until they were found and reported to our gov by Manhattan's AG.
