As the winter approaches and the days get much shorter, cycling training becomes much more difficult. The cold winter months leave many riders with a dilemma - do you train indoors on the turbo, or brave the elements and go for a night ride?

I challenge any GCN presenter(s) to go on a sub zero ride of any length. An easy location might be any of the Nordic countries. It could be a potentially good sponsor video with the proper kit and bike supplied. #GCNsubzero

We still do group rides in the dark with our club. These are only low intensity rides, because fast rides are to dangerous in the dark. But it is fine, in winter I do not have to prepare for fast rides. In group, we are like a night train, really cool the flow of lights. Cardrivers are also more prudent.

There seems to be a huge narrative among car drivers (that don’t ride) cannot see riders because of poor visibility, over the past year I’ve encountered several near misses, all of which have happened due to poor driver decision making, pulling out of junctions etc, even in broad daylight. Really looking forward to zwifting come Xmas!

Riding at night can actually be quite magical. I can see the point of an indoor trainer, if you're competing and very concerned about fitness, but riding a bicycle isn't just about training. Yesterday I rode home from work in the dark and rain, and even though the weather was kind of cold and miserable, I actually enjoyed it; a bit of controlled suffering is good for the soul.

We tackled assembling the bike as a family project. kzbin.infoUgkxzg0clhbtRf2gGxPkVETFKJJKGqdsorQu The package is heavy, but I have 2 teen boys that were able to move it. The written instructions were great- we didn't need to watch the videos, but it was good knowing that the option was there if we needed it. After we were able to get it set up, the boys each rode 3 miles and I rode 8 and the bike stayed quiet. The display is easy to reset, and you can put it on whichever setting you are using (time, distance, calories, etc). I will say that my butt is a little sore from the seat, but that could be because I haven't rode in a while. While it is comfortable for me, it was not comfortable with the seat position for my friend (could not move the seat back far enough and he slightly looked like a kid riding a tricycle that he had outgrown). He also said that the seat hurt his manly parts. We are going to look for a different seat that will be compatible with this bike for him.I did purchase the Wahoo Cadence sensor and strapped it to the crank of one of the pedals. This will sync with my Apple Watch, iPhone and will import data in to my Health app. Wahoo does have other sensors available other than cadence. I can also keep either my phone or my iPad on the display and they both feel pretty secure.

With uks second lockdown. I’ve had to buy lights to head out in the evening. Working 9-5 job from home, going out in evening is o it way to get some fresh air. Really enjoying it. Mainly doing laps of my local village. Could head out into the countryside but sure behind the hedges are some monsters.....

I'm gonna be honest. I never distinguished the difference. I would just get up, set up and ride. Anyday any time, cept maybe for ice or standing water. I think I ought to give indoor training a look maybe, perhaps it would help me to clock more hours. I do watch Zwift from time to time but I like the interactive feeling of physics, space, time and distance changing around me.

I used to enjoy commuting at night and putting on all the kit, it was like I was dressing for a battle, well at least in my head anyway. @@najiinaj8263 I don't think you understood, probably because you've never done it. Under a full moon and a clear sky, with the road to yourself and no trees making shadows, you can see the road ahead perfectly clearly. It looks really weird because it's a silvery light, but you can see everything. And the reason you can't ride at speed at such a time, is not because you can't see, but because of animals running across your path, and they tend to appear suddenly when they do.

Bit of both for me. When I go out I like to do steep hills as a workout since I keep my speed down on the flats and downhills because of potholes. I enjoy both equally. I have only been riding at night for just over a year. One thing I will say about it is that with a good set of lights on the front and rear combined with quality reflective clothing I actually feel safer riding at night than riding during the day. I have never had a close pass, been cut off at a junction or had a car trying to park on top of me at night time. Drivers always give me the required space.

Having done plenty of out of town night riding, I found you have to be really careful of rabbits & foxes etc on the road, even deer. Especially if you are zooming downhill. You might not encounter many, but when you do, you won't see them coming because they emerge suddenly from the side and cross your path. Headlight glare from oncoming traffic can also be a problem, when the fool doesn't dip their lights.

I’ve come to appreciate both. I have two little kids who get me up very early, so I usually get out the door before twilight and get to watch the sun rise on my rides. Alternatively, when it’s too cold for me or a little wet, I like getting on the trainer and doing a structured workout - it helps me focus on longer/harder efforts that are tough to do on the road (either because of traffic, terrain, or not wanting to go full out in the dark). I just got my studded snow tires, way cool totally no stress riding my mt pass town never plows water ice & frozen slush, icy shoulders & speed plows, no brainer. The training advantage? It added 1.5kg/3lb of rim weight. My stroke became instantly smoother having to keep pressure on more, speed goes down on too much downstroke. So, power training that maps to cross, mtb & road nicely, rack up the miles vs weights on the bike, I used snowshoeing a lot for power, builds the upstroke like this. Cheers🍺 [700x35f, 700x30r]

Interesting article, I have recently purchased a road bike and was on the transition to clipless pedals (I've purchased the pedals and cleats) , then just came across an article which included this [If you're going to ride your bicycle in the dark then four pedal reflectors are required; coloured amber, marked BS6102/2 (or equivalent), and positioned so that one is plainly visible to the front and another to the rear of each pedal. As mentioned earlier, most many modern pedals, such as clipless systems won't allow you to fix pedal reflectors to them so, technically, they should not be used in the dark. If in doubt, then reflective ankle bands are a suitable (though please note not a legal!) substitute.] I intended to do some night riding through the winter.

I do both. Wet, cold and windy? Turbo session. Clear night with no wind or rain? Grab the lights and get out there.

I’ve not got an indoor trainer setup, so I can’t make a comparison. But I know personally there are lots of benefits to training outside both physically and mentally. I’ve been working from home since March, so getting out on the bike is a great way of clearing the mind and getting some fresh air, otherwise I’d go mad being locked indoors all the time.

I’ll always take the outside option unless snow and ice makes riding impossible. Cold, darkness and rain are all fair game. Main benefit it’s usually quieter outside.

It's all about the thermals for me. If it's under 55f I'm not going outside for a ride, but above that and less than night rides being fun, the early morning in the dark rides are better. There's very little traffic, and you mostly have the road to yourself before 5am. So instead of going for that night ride, go to bed that much earlier and get up for the pre-dawn rides, they're amazing.

I took the bike off the turbo trainer today and road through my lunch hour. The weather was nice and the ride was fun. When I can't take time off during the work day or the weather is too bad, I ride the turbo trainer, but the turbo trainer is hot and sweaty. Its great advantage is no wind. Its weakness is I never know when a hill is going to start or end so I am often surprised to find I am in the wrong gear on a new Zwift route. I don't think I get the same fitness benefits from riding the turbo, but it sure beats doing nothing.

That time of year is coming again! Night riding for me - however, preferably not on the roads, but rather some gravel or offroad - where the danger lies in hitting a pothole or something (good lights, slower pace etc. can prevent this), not so much in getting hit by a car (which, sometimes, even the best of lights might not prevent). That said - riding offroad, but with regard to all the animals living in the country: so rather "evening riding" (when it is already dark in winter), but not too late into the night. In winter, not disturbing wildlife is more important than ever.

I am with Hank. Already need 2 pairs of gloves and a skiing buff under my helmet at night here... Milder temps in his part of the UK: night ride all the way. Qualifier; I am hoping to be on skis by Dec 4... So after that, a moot point til mid spring :).

Riding at night works where I live as a means of avoiding the summer heat. But one should always ride to the conditions since hazards on the road can be harder to spot. Its not uncommon to set out in the dark in the morning in winter either to get a decent workout in or to travel a bit farther afield. A couple of points, always backup your lights in case one set fails (2 sets front and back). You might need less light than you think, counter intuitively really bright lights can reduce what you can see and less light can help you see more, especially if there are reflective road marker and signs. Oncoming traffic will dazzle you, so take care when traveling at speed with oncoming traffic. You probably won't be as close to the road edge as you might be in the daytime, so wear all the hi vis things, vest, hi vis on the ankles, helmet, anywhere else that's going to be seen. I have been described as being visible from space in the dark which is exactly how I like it. Stay safe out there.

Spent 90% or more of my time on the roads in the dark all summer, heading out at between 2:30-3:00am 3-5 times a week. On the rural roads of northwest Indiana I found it feeling safer, much safer. Next to no traffic mile after mile. Would average encountering 3 or less vehicles in an average 40 mile ride. In the dark there is less chance of a car "sneaking up" on you. And also in this area there were way less winds. The solitude became something that really started looking forward just after a few sessions. Dark rides rule!

Full suspension 29'er with studded tires in the winter for me. We have lot of great trails to ride where I live. Trails in forest, trails on the mountain, trails beside the river and on the river ice. It's superb; I will never do indoors cycling.

I love my night rides!!! In general there is much less traffic-- I can better see cars approaching from behind, people give me more space and pass me slower, they can see cars approaching them better while passing me... I do have a lot of light and backup light, and add the "safety skin" reflective, and clear cycling glasses... I may only get back on trainer for rainy evenings. You know, the one or two more I'll get here in California this winter. 🤣

I like a light on the bars and a helmet-mounted light for night riding. It allows you to look ahead into the corners, and if you think a driver hasn't seen you, you can direct it right at them.

Night rides, but not for intervals or hard sessions. Too many critters here -- deer, turkeys, skunks, coyotes, possums, tank possums (armadillos), etc. Gotta stay alert and allow plenty of margin for error. I mostly do night rides for longer, lower effort sessions, especially in summer when the daytime temperature can be over 100F.

Here in the PNW the roads can be narrow, windy, hilly. Hard to be seen in the day sometimes. So during the winter gravel cycling it is. Some connector roads will be needed but it is fun riding through the forest high beams on feeling like you are on a speeder bike. Much more exciting than indoor. But some days it just rains way too hard.

I only ride outdoors. I like the night, the quietness. But I think good preparation and clothing is key. I usually take 2 cellphones, innertube, pump, spare light, first aid kit, extra Shirt, power Bars as well as my, like cars lights, switchabel low beam - high beam 16 Watts LED Front light to See everything and be save at high speeds out the City or in the forest.
