"Kpop's awesome" - wasn't expecting that but pleasantly surprised! I usually don't tell my coworkers about my personal interests, so it was nice seeing my two worlds collide. Much respect!

Keep making videos!!! I'm emotionally invested now lol, been trying to decided between graphic design and industrial design, and I'm leaning towards ID now, in fact I know its what I want to do! Thanks for the Inspiration.

"I think the first designer that inspired me... Naoto Fu-kuh-sawa" Perfect. 完璧。深澤(Fukasawa)ってちょっと違うでも、he's got the attitude. *checks pronunciation* "Naotu Fuku-" Uhh... oh well. This was really insightful! I wish I found your channel earlier.

I’m obsessed with HAY, I have their Everyday cutlery, I’m not a designer but recently interested in designer objects, I don’t know why I got obsessed with the Everyday cutlery, to the point that I bring it with me in my room and stare at it, and pick it up and inspect how beautiful its designed

HI Gray! Thanks for sharing this video. Did you finish your BS in engineering, or did you get a degree in ID? I'm a mechanical engineer that's worked in industry for a few years, but I'm in the process of pivoting into a design role (turns out I wanted to do ID all along). I'd love to know if you had to make that transition as well. Cheers!.

Hi Derek! I did do a B.S. in engineering, worked as an engineer for a while and ended up switching into ID, so I guess a similar situation. TBH it’s not an easy switch and requires a lot of extra work but it can be done :)

@@somegraythings Thank you Gray! That's inspiring to hear! Thank you again for sharing. I've been hammering the sketching and rendering for a while now, and I've been fortunate enough to find some good mentorship on design thinking and research (plus I was able to weasel enough on the job experience to get a portfolio going). We'll see how it shakes out!

Do you need any prototypes for your design. We can make very nice prototypes.😊

I also did an engineering degree (even though I knew i wanted to go in ID) - could you share more about your transition? Are you still able to use your eng degree?
@somegraythings3 жыл бұрын
I still use some things i learned as an engineer, but it also helps that i was more or less always in product development. Some things from school, like heavy analytics and math i don’t use much. I went back to school to really transition into ID, that gave me the time to really focus on switching :)

Yes I am still designing! What would you like to know?

@@somegraythings Hey! Thanks for replying. I suppose we could start with what you do now? I'm also just wondering how receptive the ID industry is to green design. Like can you make money designing eco-friendly? But yeah, the first question first. I appreciate your time!

I work as an industrial designer of course! A lot of the stuff I do is consumer electronics type stuff, but recently there has been some home goods (non-electronic) and automotive concept stuff. Sometimes it’s just concepts, sometimes it’s more in the direction of production. In my experience, most industrial designers are interested in sustainability, but have a hard time fitting it into projects. ID has an endless amount of methods and initiatives for being more sustainable, and there is more and more work in this area. But still way less than their should be. A lot of businesses still don’t see it as a priority unfortunately. But let’s say green design is happening more now than it used to at least.

@@somegraythings Thank you again for the replys. I'm considering going back to school to study ID but I've heard you can get into it without schooling. Is this real? I honestly have many more questions. I do appreciate your time! We could continue talking here or would it be possible to email? I'd be open to buying you a cup of coffee as well if you're in the southern california area.

Sustainable products in itself - today - is a bit of a contradiction. We need to make less stuff. We need to buy less stuff. I love designing, and building etc. So in order to have a job I need to make stuff - thus the sustainability idea one might have had in the earlier years, will be gradually being washed away - I think - in order to fit in the world that pays the check. I don't work in the ID industry, myself, but if I did, I suspect I would end as I described it. A bit (or much) desillusioned.
@dakotarecreates33683 жыл бұрын
Well put. So what industry do you work in? I too am inclined along these lines of thinking but I believe in creating things with sustainability built in. The struggle is real but worthwhile isn't it?
