Here we go
We recently bought a second Cobra Class 26 (Industrial Leather Sewing Machine) with an Electronic Position System (EPS) and we found our first machine getting neglected. We got so used to this on our second machine that our muscle memory wouldn't let us use the older machine. So, it was time to install it EPS on our first machine so we could get the most out of batching designs, producing more than one color at a time, and being a little bit more efficient.
We install EPS on our first Cobra Class 26. This required updating with a new servo motor, switch, and synchronizer. If you plan on doing this yourself. You'll need a few hours to dedicate to removing and installing all the components. I chose to use some of the parts from our old setup to make things a little smoother. You won't regret this upgrade.
Don't know what EPS is?
EPS is an electronic synchronizer that allows you to tap on your foot pedal and have the needle land in either needle up or needle down position. This makes starting your stitch and back-tacking perfect every time. We prefer Needle Down which is front tap Needle down, back tap Needle up but we recommend you try both out and see what feels most natural.
Why we love our Cobra Class 26
This machine fit the sweet spot for us. We make bags, like a thicker thread weight, and needed something that would handle vegetable tanned leather without issue since we sometimes sew up to 15 oz. The Class 26 checked all our boxes. We liked it so much we have two and upgraded the first machine (bought in 2017) with a new feed dog and throat plate to match to newer model. One other modification we've made was to grind down the throat plate to smooth out the edges so there isn't a possibility of marking the leather.

I have one of these motors and sensors already, but haven’t setup the sensor yet. I think I may need to do that soon.

Yes! It's pretty great and takes all the guess work out of back-tacking.

Git my Cobra 26 a few months ago. I realized I should've sprung for the EPS immediately.

It really is going to depend on what you are making. We always recommend calling a distributor and letting them know what you are making, thread, needle size, material thickness, budget, etc and they can help guide you. Machines are generally light, med, heavy duty and are best for a certain range. If you were making flat wallets or similar items you can go with a flat bed machine but if you are doing bags or more 3-D type projects we would recommend a cylinder arm machine (like we have). There are also used options which are more budget friendly. Hope that's a good place to start there are more options than ever with industrial machines.
