Straight A student, never gave anyone any trouble & I was sent home from junior high for a mini skirt that was deemed a “distraction.” In a role reversal from this song my mom went to school & gave them a piece of her mind on my behalf. Skirts too short, hair too long, ideas too radical. We went through it all in the 60’s

First concert I recall seeing (probably around 6 years old - 1976) was Jeannie C. Riley performing at our county fair. I didn't understand this song's theme back then, but have since come to appreciate it for it's brilliance. Great old tune! She did a lot of collab with Johnny Cash - I've got a box set of vinyl where all the A sides are Cash, and all the B sides are her.

Brilliant song, and performance by Jeannie C. Riley. Wonderful. If you like this, you would also appreciate Bobby Gentry singing 'Ode to Billy Joe' if you don't already know it. 💙🕊☮

Happy 60s songs in a era of so much change, controversy, change in all things and the Nam war. Petula Clark - Downtown. I always liked and some other songs of hers, Cher - Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves....probably very early 70s and of course Sonny and Cher with their first hit - I Got You Babe. LOVE Peter, Paul and Mary the ultimate Folk group. Few seem to do their cover basically same year as the writer who was Bob Dylan's anthem that Peter, Paul and Mary also took to the top of the charts the song - Blowing in the Wind....

The term “ she had to leave town “ was in reference to becoming pregnant! They never said at that time unwed mother or pregnant out of wedlock. In order for people not to know the woman or girl was sent away or “ left town to …..which would disgrace the family name.

I was 19 when this song was on the radio. I would hear it driving to work. haha I'm old so a lot of songs from the 1950 to current I would know, but no rap or hip hop. I was more rock and roll, country and ballads from the OLD timers. I was a big fan of Motown and Disco! My era of course.

Secretary left town, because she got pregnant. It's what single, pregnant women did - they went to "visit a sick aunt" somewhere. We all knew what that meant. Peyton Place was a primetime soap opera from a movie from a book that was very scandalous 😂

There was a 2 finger from the middle of your knee rule when it came to skirts, got sent home for wearing pants in winter with deep snow. Boys hair could not touch the collar of their collared shirts, my brother got thrown out of church for looking like the guy on the wall.

The secretary had to leave town because her boss got her pregnant. Back in those days, a woman having a baby out of wedlock was frowned upon and she had to go to someplace for unwed mother's. It's even worse if it's her boss's baby and he's married. She would definitely had to get out of town, have the baby and put it up for adoption before she can show herself back in town
