relly brings me back! Back in 2008, I was one of the winners in the Peak AntiFreeze Indy Racing Experience With Danica Patrick Sweepstakes. Drove 3 laps on the track, and met my idol, Mario Andretti. Got a picture and shook his hand! Also, met Danica Patrick. She autographed several copies of her in SI's swimsuit issue that year. Don't let those SI pics fool you. Her chest is NOT as big as hey imply!

Great job! Dream come true for those who understand the historical value of the experience. I went to indy time trials from 1978-1996 (entered military service and haven't been back), but have never been to a race. I think the indy experience would make up for it! This will be my retirement gift:)

I come up with a 82 sec grid pole to gridpole and with a 2.5 mi run 13200ft/82sec=160ft per sec or like 120MPH avg and since you have to go about .3 over to get the avg(std dev) he touched on 140 in spots, pretty good for an amatuer and lots more than 75MPH, if you've watched any motorsports you should know video does not do the speed justice....ninja

You used to be able to get your car on the track - usually in the fall/winter/very early spring - if you knew someone reasonably high up at the IMS and didn't drive like an idiot. Back in 1981 I hit 100 on the main straight in my Mazda 626 - but never got above 75 or so in the turns (I think I was above 80, maybe, thru turn 2 on my third and final time thru that turn). And my IMS buddy said I was driving like an idiot for that car and those tires. The foreign exchange student in the car - who always wanted to just visit IMS and was the purported reason for the trip to the track - almost passed out. My wife loved it though. It was a real thrill. Although I never felt remotely close to trouble in the turns (at just 70-75, maybe 80 mph), I couldn't help but feel panicked the first couple of times heading into 1 and 3 - braking to less than 70 the first full lap ... probably less than 60 the very first time I drove into 1. Just like Mario. (you'd get a lecture before driving onto the track that there was no fire or rescue crew at the track - you were not to go fast enough to risk losing control - suggesting 60 on the straights and 40-50 in the turns, which would have been far-too-leisurely - probably said just to keep morons from driving into a turn at 90 or 100 in a Mazda 626 on standard tires on a cold, blustery day in March) As part of the opening ceremonies the morning the track would open for practice back in the good ol' days of May, ANYONE could drive onto the track during a set period of time (with hundreds of other passenger cars) for a single lap of the track (no drive down the main straight. You entered the track via the (old) pit exit and exited the track at the old pit entrance - trying to ensure the guys in the firebirds, corvettes, and mustangs who were driving well in excess of the stated 60 mph speed limit would miss your car as they thundered down the back straight.

@@B__L - Is Indy not THE most famous track in the world, particularly viewed through the entire history of auto sports? LeMans, Monaco, Silverstone, the Nurburgring, Spa, Imola?? Some/all of those may be better race circuits in terms of challenges to drive - but more famous? Nahhh.
@B__L3 жыл бұрын
@@davidcarter2720 Outside of the USA they are arguably nearly all more famous. Especially Le Mans and the Nurburgring. I think you overestimate how many people watch, or even know about, the Indy 500 in Europe/Asia etc. Even in the USA Daytona is more recognisable for some.
@davidcarter27203 жыл бұрын
@@B__L - name that tune. F1 is clearly the international racing series, and it's tracks are pretty well known to it's fans. I've travelled a good amount, and as I have met people - when they hear I'm originally from Indianapolis, they almost always say "Indy 500". And as Indy has hosted F1 and Moto GP events, the tremendous foreign crowds those events would bring would cite Indy as an auto sports Mecca - thrilling at the size of the crowds, the overall hugeness of the place, and it's history. I'm not belittling those other tracks - and already acknowledged most of them as better racing circuits. But more famous than Indy, particularly if you include "historic" in the description of "famous"? Having said all that - it would be interesting to study the matter more objectively. I expect that if you asked a motor sports fan to name the most famous auto racing track in the world - the results would be all over the map, skewed to tracks nearer to them or in the series they pay most attention to. But if you gave those same folks a multiple choice selection of tracks and asked them to identify the most famous of them in the world, including those I listed and more (Daytona, Sebring, Suzuka, ... whatever) - Indy would come out on top.

I just took a video with my GoPro yesterday in 720p at 60fps. It's mounted on my helmet the same way. What I think is a bit odd is that you just drove around the track leisurely and not even shifting into 2'nd gear. If you really want to truly appreciate an F1 car, you have to actually get on the gas, try out the brakes, and see how well it holds the road at over 100mph. I didn't see any of that here.

Great experience. Good on you! I must do it. A shame about the sound as you really don't get that engine sound. I am not a big fan of Go pros. Love the armchair experts though who need to get out and try it themselves before criticizing. Videoing (especially from that angle) always makes the car look like they are going slow. Pro drivers drive for years before being able to drive these cars to the limit. You can't expect someone getting into an Indy for the first time to take it to the edge. Gung Ho cowboys don't realize that you take too many risks and you break the car you will spend a long time paying the repair bill as usually the insurance doesn't cover the entire cost when you do these drives. Would like to know where to do this. I'll have to come to the US and do this.

You've obviously never had a racing experience in your life. A) It's a fixed gearbox; there's only one very long first gear. B) It's not an F1 car, it's an IndyCar. Big difference. C) If he did 'get on the gas', he'd either pile into the back of the car in front (which would be expensive), or be unable to control it because, no offence, but he probably doesn't have any racing experience (I'm assuming). D) That is probably about 100mph anyway, it's just the camera always makes it look slow
