IndyCar's closest finish ever on a road course happened at the 1997 Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 at Portland International Raceway in the CART Series. It was the closest finish ever in the CART Series, as well as the closest 3 car finish ever.

Great video Demise. I actually attended this race (I was 2 years old at the time & spent most of the race being preoccupied with the hot chocolate & hot dog that my dad bought me instead of watching the on track action lol). This was a great recap of what I missed during the race. I also attended the 2000 race at Portland along with the 2004 & 2005 races. I haven't been back to PIR for Indycar since they returned in 2018 though I am attending this weekend's race (I have been to PIR for both the NASCAR Xfinity Series & Formula E this past year). Lastly since you have covered this race, you should also do a review in the future of the first time NASCAR went to PIR back in 1999 when the Truck Series raced there as that was a very exciting race as well.

Thanks for this video. When it started it reminded me of the race Mark Blundell won on the last lap and was going to request you did that one and to my surprise it was actually this one. I thought it was at Mid-Ohio. I remembered seeing this one live and thought it was an amazing way to win... and to only lead the race for a few inches (or did he lead the race at any other time?)

My pleasure, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Mark ran second behind his teammate Mauricio Gugelmin and third when Zanardi took the lead for most of the race. He got credit for leading 1 lap earlier on a pit cycle, but other than that, the last lap was the only one he led.

I swear the whole Eurosport version used to be up on YT but I can't, for the life of me find it, only the SPN version... Anyone got a clue where to find it? Also it makes me laugh Mark won 3/4 of the Marlboro Million program, if only he'd won Homestead he'd have taken that. Hopefully, you do the other two wins if you ain't already, I forget if you covered Toronto or Fontana 97, which was just as nuts from start to finish and Zanardi talks about in his book. Somehow I seem to remeber something about Toronto 97 on here but not 100% sure

I'm not sure about the Eurosport version, i only found the ESPN version. I'm sure I will visit some of those races at some point. I've done Toronto 2001 on the Channel, but you are probably thinking of Vancouver 1997 which I have done on the channel.

I don't think there was a single bad livery in that 97 CART field at all, was there? I mean even the backmarker teams had great paint jobs, Hogan, Ribeiro, Mier, dannr et al, they all had great paint schemes on slow cars, and then you had the front of the pack with absolutely amazing schemes

With such a dramatic finish I'd kinda forgotten how wild the rest of the race was 😄 But I was so happy for Blundell, as they said on commentary he'd been leading at Belle Isle only to run out of fuel -at the death- a couple of corners before the end of the last lap. [edited for @sdsmt99]
