Indycar's Craziest Survival Story: Kenny Brack at Texas 2003

Kenny Brack was one of the biggest names in open-wheel racing in the early 2000s. He was consistently fighting for wins and was a CART champion. However at Texas in 2003, Kenny’s life was nearly cut short. His car flew into a catch fence, destroying his car completely. One of the most horrific crashes in Indycar should’ve ended his life, at the very least his racing career. Brack would not only survive, but his life would write the story of one of the greatest comebacks in racing history.

He *won* the rallycross event at XGames, and that was his first race behind the wheel after his final Indy 500. The man is amazing.

The worst part was when Tony George was interviewed after the race and claimed how great a race it was as the medical team was still attempting to extricate Brack from the car.

I was at that race, and it was an awful sleepless night and a somber way to end the season.

I was 12 and saw it live, and even at that age, I was expecting the worst. As a child, a crash was exciting, but certain ones were easily understood to be potentially tragic, and this was certainly one of them

Catch fence crashes in Indy Car are always absolutely terrifying. It’s bad enough in a stock car but in those cars, it’s even scarier.

Catch fence crashes in indy cars are far more likely to injure the driver than crashing into a catch fence on a stock car. Infact in every nascar catch fence crash the driver has walked away.

I started watching around 1996 and had seen the crash of Jeff Krosnoff live too which was eerily similar, although on a street course. The catch fence shredded the car and the monocoque ended up on the opposite side of the track. Kenny was "lucky" in the sense that he suffered no blunt force trauma to his head from the fencing poles, but to survive those forces on his brain and heart too was nothing short of miraculous!

I was at the race when this happened. It was pretty wild because his engine ended up in the stands. Fortunately this was on the backstretch because it would've seriously injured fans in the grandstands.

One correction, he was not CART Champion. He won the 1999 Indy 500 which was on IRL's side. He then went to CART when Gil de Ferran was champion, in 2000 and 2001.

Kenny also had, at least for a while,a pretty awesome band as well, need to check if they released more than one song, even if it is a really really really good song. Also Kenny's crash made it onto the main news over here. for context, when Dan Wheldon won the Indy 500, it didn't make it on, either time. When Dan won the 2005 IRL title, all we got was a small writeup and a photo. This crash? Made the main BBC news, as did Newman's insane flip in Feburary 03 as well, both with the race coverage.l

I have a funny little anecdote about this. After Kenny's wife gave birth to a daughter in the same hospital that he was recovering in, the family moved to the UK. How do I know this? Well, I had the insane fortune of going to primary school with his daughter, Karma! She was a lovely kid, although quite shy, and I remember racing her around the playground once when she asked to join in my F1 roleplay. Unfortunately I didn't know much about Indycar at the time, so I was never able to discuss racing with Kenny.

This crash is thought to be the most G-forces sustained by a human that survived. At the peak of his spin in the air, it was like 600 Gs or something with an average of 210Gs for the duration of the crash.

210g was the peak of his crash.. You realize that if he weighs 180lbs, 600g would put him over 1/10 of a MILLION pounds, I don't buy that. That's probably just short of ripping the Iron Man suit off of Downey Jr. lol

I always have a slight but constant fear of seeing someone spearing THROUGH the catchfence and out of the track, hopefully this never happens

Looks just like Austin Dillon's crash at the finish of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona. Same lift and spin, same speed, catch fence stopped him on a dime and ripped his car in half. ....AND Austin walked away.
