I went to the Indy 500 this year. And let me tell you. That is one big track and I’ve been to a bunch of different tracks and this one is the greatest one of all. My wife took me for over anniversary. When we was walking down the street to the track and you make that last turn and you see this massive track it takes your breath at how big this place is. TV does no justice to how big this track is. And average 232 mph around the track is fast! If you’ve never been to the Indy 500 I suggest you go to it. I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

I tried oval in AMS2 in VR with old Indy cars and it was a blast. It was like wheel to wheel racing but instead of lasting for a few exciting moments of the race, it was like that the whole race. Also 100% agree with the strategy side of it. With the slip stream exchange, you can overtake someone for him to come back right after you. The end was like a game of chicken of who is gonna make the last overtake right before the finish line.

The old dos game Indy Car Racing 2 by Papyrus taught me that oval tracks are super tricky until you set up the car perfect and wait till the tires are at prefect temp, than it is a beautiful rhythm as you roll through the laps.

im super happy to finally see someone give indycar credit..not many realize that its not easy to muscle a 230 mile an hour indycar with no power steering...the car loads up with downforce as you swing the car out to the wall at the end of the straightaway...not to mention you time your breathing to straigtaways only..but from entrance to 1 and 3 you hold on like a fighter pilot does helping fight the g forces to keep from greying out from in corners then exhale 2 and 4..you can sneak a little one in on the short shoots between 1 and 2 then again 2 and 4...that doesnt begin to add a ill handling car on old tires in traffic..and imagine the walls used to be concrete all the way around the track before safer barrier

Not sure what was different about what you were racing at Indy, but usually you would be driving around in 5th gear and upshift to 6th to save a little fuel. Also it’s flat out for awhile till tire wear comes into play. I was feeling like the downshifting entering was maybe part of what was getting you loose. Love the realism though. Nobody does it as good as you do!! Keep up the great work!!

Also shouldn't need to fight the wheel that much in race trim. I've yet to see anyone model oval, let alone open wheel oval, racing well in 20 years.
@71datsun12 жыл бұрын
@@waltersobchak8080 Have you tried iRacing IR18 C class Oval series or Bclass on Ovals? Pretty awesome. Nothing like that clusterf**k above. No offense to Will. IR18 models the dirty air great and must constantly adjust F/R roll bars and weight jacker as fuel burns or move from clean to dirty air. Competition is fierce. Monday night top split is 3500IR minimum to 8k guys. Ive never spun during a race and can usually make top 5 2nd split or 1st later in week. Handling is wicked and drastically changes during a run and must chase it wt in car adjustments. I've driven Skippy and F2000 in real life. I don't think the skip feels right but the F2000 in iR feels really close. Obviously never driven a Dallara IR22 but it feels good and is a absolute beast to drive fast and competitive. I personally think iR oval is pretty accurate. I've driven a Late Model irl and LM & SLM feel pretty accurate. With Next Gen switching from solid axle to IRS this year, I could drive the upcoming track everywhere it wanted to spin in iR, they'd spin in the same spots in same way in the actual race. I love the 87 cup cars and they aren't easy. Dale Jr spent tons of time making them feel accurate and used setups from crew chiefs notebooks from the era. Trucks are a blast. iR dirt racing is pretty awesome. Difference from a winged Sprint 305 to 410 is night and day. Midgets at the Chili Bowl race like every one I've watched. Not sure how accurate they handle. iR models moisture in Dynamic Track data on dirt. Starts tacky and wears to dry slick real time. Rubbered in groove on asphalt. Probably know all that. I started on Papyrus Indycar & Nascar 30yrs ago. For Road, I only drive vintage stuff in AC. Oval asphalt and dirt iR only. AC and AMS2 is garbage imo. And no one but iR does dirt worth anything. If you've never tried iR IR18 on oval, and like open wheel oval, you should definitely try it. And it's available for AI races. None of that braking and off line crap like above. At 100% difficulty, 100% distance, it's pretty brutal and physically and mentally draining. Not a iR fanboy, I just love all Motorsports and think nothing comes close to iR for oval racing. The asphalt Sprint and Silver Crown cars are insanely hard to drive. Cheers!
@waltersobchak80802 жыл бұрын
@@71datsun1 It makes sense that iR has the best oval physics given the legacy of Papyrus. In fact, iR (and its history) is what I had in mind making my comment. My larger point is that no else seems to be able to catch the same lightning in a bottle (unfortunate for us)!

I went to the Indy 500 this year. The cars are so fast that they are in front of you 1 second and a few seconds later they are a blur off in the distance. Also there was 325,000 people that showed up on race day. There was a human traffick jam behind the grand stands. It was so crowded you could not get through and looking around no one else could either. We had to turn around and go to the front of the stands to get to our seats.

I only initially gave it a go as I didn’t have time to learn anything other than ovals. I had no idea what I was letting myself in for. You’ve summed up that eyes on stalks, non stop terror, heart hammering, breath held experience wonderfully. Did you find the straights aren’t straight either but you’re having to hold the car right as it’s set up to turn left? And any steering input slows the car down, even a fraction, which is bad. Now go try a short oval like Iowa :)

Come race wt us in iRacing IR18 C class Fixed Oval!! Would make great content. Competition is fierce and guys are fast AF. Especially Monday night broadcast. 3500 IR minimum for top split. After Monday night it's just us mortals racing. Dirty air is wicked. Speed is insane. Get your license in rookie FVee. D in Skippy or F2000. Then C IR18. Races are about an hour and half. IR18 is available in AI races to practice. Set difficulty to 100%. B class IR18 is a mix of Road & Oval but is Open so you better have good setups. Ditch AMS2 for oval. AI is terrible and over brakes and doesn't use correct lines. That car never raced at Indy in 00. Until then stop downshifting. At Indy, 5th in clean air or 6th drafting or saving fuel. Be smooth. Small inputs. Can't jump off throttle. If you catch a cars draft then shift to 6th, drag the brakes to maintain distance and lower rpm. Off throttle just upsets the car badly, kills all speed and gets ya hit from behind. During the race you must adjust the F/R anti roll bars and weight jacker as the fuel burns off and as you move from clean to dirty air. Can change engine and throttle mapping for fuel strategy. Handles completely different in dirty air vs clean. You gotta enter off line from guy in front to get air on the nose and hold that line so you're not crashing the guy behind you. And you must use a spotter. Crucial. Either iR or Crew Chief. Come race wt us on some ovals. Lotta fun. Then try some stock cars. When people think it's easy, it looks about like that. 1-200L in the draft or 250- 500 on a short track will wear ya out physically and mentally.
