I think the main reason the V10 cars are faster on the straights is because... since the hybrid cars gained a huge Downforce gain in 2017, it caused ALOT of drag, and drag decreases top speed, however the V10s ran on a lower downforce setup, therefore less drag, so they had a higher top speed

I honestly don’t care wether the modern F1 cars are faster than the V10’s or not. That sound alone is more than enough for me to much much much rather want to see those cars race than the vacuum cleaners that have now. That is not to diminish the amazing and ungodly hard work that has been and is being put into them, but from a pure entertainment point of view, these heavy, lazy and tame sounding cars don’t have a single thing to put up with compared to those V10’s. Especially those legends like the R25 and F2004. For example, in 2020, when Alonso got to drive his championship winning F1 car, the R25, around Abu Dhabi, i could not stop watching that little clip over and over again. I think one of the comments on that video summarised the whole thing perfectly. «Watching Alonso drive his R25 around the track for a 2 minute video was more entertaining than the entire current F1 season.»

In truth as we see with the track records that go down each year. In real life with similar tires the results would probably be the more recent the farther up the grid you would be. It’s not only about the engine, even though it makes a difference it’s not all. And with the changes to smaller engines aerodynamics solutions were implemented that completely changed the landscape year by year. Of course there would be black swan situations. But as a rule of thumb.

THE ONE THING no one mentions is how unreliable v10s were compared to now. And how many engines and gearboxes were thrown away through the year. And modern cars are WAAAY more efficent. It's easy to be fast if you don't have to be reliable. And FINNALY, why are drivers not complaining about good old times? Because they race for racing, not for the sound or just pure speed.

It all makes sense now. I was wondering why modern F1 races and cars look so slow - it's just because i'm used to the monsters that the early 2000s cars were. Smaller and less powerful engines with bulkier and heavier cars can't really bring something faster. Really miss the speed of the Golden F1 Era, but what i miss even more is the sound. Those howling V10 will forever stay not only in my mind, but my heart and soul as well.

Too compare it in real life it is easy, take alonsos run in his 2005 winning car, in 2020 where he drove it with slicks on it in an cruising speed, his fastest lap in abu dabi was a 1:39, 2 seconds slower than the pole time of that time. And that on a dirty track with Medium tyres in an cruising speed. Imagine he had soft tyres on and was pushing it too the Limit on a good not dirty track, he would be way faster than the pole time in 2020. People today wouldn't even believe it how slow modern f1 cars are in comparision with these monsters. And think of it he didn't have drs in this car and no extra power he can use, and still he could go faster than modern f1 cars. If that is not impresive and shows what f1 had become over the years then i don't know. He was even faster than the fastest race lap in 2020 and that in an cruising speed in his 2005 car with slicks on. Reality shows it, 2000's f1 cars with slicks on are faster than modern f1 cars. Nowone can deny that when you saw how easy he drove does laps back then in 2020.

@oZyn8 ай бұрын
One has to realize that we are making comparably fast cars with notably smaller 6 cylinder hybrid engines. If we tried to make the fastest track car possible today it would be deadly like the Red Bull X2010 prototype. There is a point where just because the car is faster, that doesn't make the racing better. The engineering is better across the entire car. Just because it isn't faster in one lap, doesn't mean it's a downgrade. You can see the effects of the improved aerodynamics in the high-speed corners where the McLaren is able to maintain a much higher cornering speed. If the cars had V10s today they'd have to make them all-wheel drive or bring back traction control because they'd be uncontrollably fast. The cars are more advanced, safer, have some interesting new features, and F1 continues to change year to year to stay interesting. The ground effect rules are quite ground breaking indeed. I do wish that there was less of a gap between constructors in terms of speed. It is frustrating watching the same cars win repeatedly.
