Dhá mbeadh mo chlann sa mbaile agam
an oíche a bhfaighinnse bás,
Go dtórróidís go croíúil mé
trí oíche 's trí lá;
Bíodh na píopaí fada cailce dhom
na ceaigeannaí is iad lán,
'S beidh triúr ban óg ó shléibhte
le mé a chaoineadh os cionn cláir.
Ar dhul siar thar Inse Ghainimh dhom
bíodh a' bratach in a' a crann,
Ná cuirigí i Leitir Caladh mé
mar ní ann atá mo dhream.
Ach tugaigí siar go Maínis mé,
áit a gcaoinfear mé os ard,
'S Beidh soilse ar na dumhchannaí....

I regard this as one of the finest and as one of the most moving songs I have ever heard in any language. Although I regularly listen to songs in languages I will never know I am really very glad that I have not yet forgotten the Irish I was forced to learn at school so many long years ago.

@foodboss13 We are a film company based in the west of Ireland. All of the videos on our channel are productions of ours. This one is from the film, Cré na Cille (Graveyard Clay). We do have quite a bit on the Irish language as this is the language most of our productions are in. They are all subtitled though - so people that don't speak Irish don't miss out! :)

@Renapple Hi Renapple, Thank you for your message. It is a traditional song called "Amhrán Mhaínse", roughly pronounced "ow-rawn vween-sheh". The singer is Áine Ní Dhroighneáin and this is an excerpt from the film "Cré na Cille" (Graveyard Clay) which has been released on DVD.

Yes. Different linguistic branches (Germanic and Goidelic). I think Irish is one of those languages that can sound like a lot of languages, though.

@@ewillan According to Irish indigenous history, the language came about after the fall of the tower of babel and was pieced together from the bits remaining of every other language.

It's far softer I think and more musical when spoken at length.
