Inequality and Climate Breakdown: The Survival Paradox | Sean McCabe | TEDxDrogheda

Climate chage requires a paradigm shift towards building low carbon, resilient societies and economies.Around the world, Trade Unions are embracing the concept of Just Transtition. A Just Transition requires early forecasting to predict social and economic risks of climate policy; social dialogue between workers, their employers and policy makers to build trust and plan for the transition; social security measures and training for those who are at risk of losing work; and economic diversification to ensure impacted regions can continue to exist. A Just Transition approach can foster the solidarity and empathy we require to achieve the target of the Paris Agreement and ensure we realise the potential of the Sustainable Development Goals. It provides the framework to tackle these global agendas at the local level and help us chart a course to a safer and fairer world. I am a scientist. For the past five years I have worked with former President Mary Robinson. Our work focused on climate justice and in my role as Policy Officer I participated in the negotiations for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. I currently work with TASC, an independent think-tank whose core focus is addressing inequality and sustaining democracy. My work with TASC is focused on bringing deliberative democracy approaches to bear on the Just Transition in Ireland and Europe. I am also a candidate for the Local Elections in May 2019. I am running in the Cabra/Glasnevin ward in Dublin, on a platform focused on community participation, human rights and climate action.
