What on earth makes this an abandoned Highway of Death? THIS part of the Will Rogers Turnpike was l/is a considerable distance from malfunction junction that turned toward it! I was a Toll Collector at the Tulsa East Turnpike Gate and have walked this road with feelings of sadness and nostalgia. It’s a short piece of highway really, behind the beautiful homes of Spunky Creek, Catoosa, and has zero to do with the 26 year old man who fell while doing construction work on the new bridge over I-44, that completely bypassed the old toll booth where I used to work. I'd take I-44 out to Catoosa, then 66 from there to Foyil. And more often than not, it was all jammed up from a wreck. Yes, it's a straight section of road, but it was the old interchange where the dangerous curve and ramps were. There was a lot going on there, where the free section of I-44 turned into the Will Rogers turnpike (the abandoned section you see) and old Hwy 66, and 412 interchanges were. They did the right thing, it was a major bottleneck then, it would be a mess now.

This stretch itself was not dangerous. It was the junction at the south end (which still exists, just as a turnoff to Catoosa) was the dangerous part. The main reason this was bypassed is because of the Creek Turnpike that takes you way out of your way around Tulsa. The new route basically tries to trick people into taking the Creek Turnpike instead of taking I-44. When it first opened, many people were tricked. All they had to do really was redo the junction of I-44 and the highway going to Silom Springs, AR and that would have been the fix, but nope, Oklahoma wants you to use a long, out-of-the-way Creek Turnpike instead of path of least resistance.

So, this section of the original Will Rogers Turnpike was likely designed and built by or in the mid 1950s. A long way from today’s highway standards or even those just 30 years later. What is sort of surprising is how long it took to build a replacement section that is safer. When you look at the very narrow median with a mediocre Jersey barrier it’s no wonder there were so many fatalities. One can look to The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission that has eliminated a number of antiquated tunnels and other safety issues with reroutes. The problem now is, across America, we have probably dozens and dozens of instances like this in Tulsa. But instead of investing the fuel tax dollars into infrastructure using new, safer traffic designs, the funds are diverted in many states for feel good stuff like “ rails to trails” and other non essential items. If people want those, fine. Finance them with local or other revenue sources. Now we have EVs using the public highway and local roads without paying a penny of highway fuel tax like the rest of us do . That just shifts the burden of paying for the maintenance to the rest of us in all states. At some point this will have to be addressed. In the meantime we can hope that local officials move as fast as possible to remedy roads that have a known fatality rate above the norm.
@batemanjo924 күн бұрын
@@petertaviano9593 EVs have an additional registration surcharge on their yearly renewal to cover the fuel tax loss. In Texas the average vehicle registration fee is about $72, for an EV is $72 plus $400 for the 1st and 2nd year and then $200 on the 3rd year and repeats the $200 each year. And as always fees can increase at anytime

Is this where I-44 (Will Rogers Turnpike) used to merge with 412 right at the Casino? And it's no longer in use and has been replaced with the Creek Turnpike extension? If so, I can see why they did it- I HATED that intersection where 412 came into I-44!! Especially if you were on 412 (like I was) heading west at that intersection you had to do a crazy sharp S-turn where they had to have enough room for the underpass for the eastbound folks who wanted to exit onto I-44 east.

By taking out this stretch of road your moving that merge to the east by a mile Then again if they just had I-44 and Oklahoma 66 run congruently this would have never been an issue from the looks of it. They have two 4 lane highways running parallel for 10 miles half a mile from each other

@@KingDavidtheRed1 Only Drag Strip left in Dallas Co.,Tx also has a sharp curve at the end of it. Place is called 'Yello Belly'.

Highway is straight as an arrow, yet has dangerous curves? 🤔 Maybe just the roads entering and exiting? Seems like that could have been fixable.
@MikeKalasnik14 күн бұрын
Strange how you mentioned it was dangerous yet all I see is straight road.

Damn, imagine dying on the construction of a project that gets abandoned

No, the project he died working on is the bypass that made this stretch of road unnecessary.

I've walked that highway section. It's pretty cool. About 5 miles from my house.

The world is full of abandoned developments. What's so remarkable about this one? Even if you narrow it down to roads bypassed by safer ones, there are plenty. What about the disused tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike -- at least one of which was abandoned *twice* : once for a never-built railroad, again when the turnpike that finished and used it bypassed it. There's a copper mine that over many centuries was closed and "abandoned" as played out 7 times! Old Croton Aqueduct, abandoned and then a part of it reopened many years later.

Looks like a good running track. Maybe I'll go there one day and run there. I don't live in Tulsa but I ain't that far from it either

Hazzardous curves? Where are they? Its so strait you could almost use it as a drag strip.

Wow I never knew about any of this. I've lived in the general area (western Arkansas) since 1990 and never knew they had replaced this stretch and abandoned the old part. These days I avoid most interstates, period. Old 66 along that way is a safe alternative.

Even though it's abandoned, it looks better than most Commyfornia roads!!!!
