I love history, most especially American history. Of course, wild west history is st the top of my favorites. So, I have read, watched and listened to lots, LOTS of Billy the Kid history. This is, dar and away the best researched of anything that I have ever found. Before listening to Black Barrel Media, I thought that I Knew all there was to know about the outlaw. Thank you, not only for the outstanding research, but for narrating this standout account with a really good, real live Human. Your channel should have 100K subscribers. Hopefully, you will soon

I've listened to the complete series and my hat's off for an excellent job. There is just one important issue where I think it is important to set the record straight, and this regards the state of the Post Cemetery in Fort Sumner. The flood which was rumored to have washed away the body of the Kid and others has been proven to be a long-standing myth. The year was 1904, and the walled cemetery did fill with standing water for about two weeks, but the river was not close enough to wash anything away and the walls remained intact. In 1905-6, the Army contracted with Charles W. Dudrow to locate and exhume the bodies of about 22 soldiers from the 1860s when the fort was still an active post. They were to be reburied in Santa Fe. Dudrow found that every body was exactly where it was supposed to be, and was able to identify some by uniform insignia. He drew a map of the body locations and that exists today. In addition to the 22 military burials, Dudrow confirmed the location of Billy Bonney and his fellow gang members. Also Lucien and Pete Maxwell and other locals remain where they were buried. The current marked location of the Kid's grave (and Folliard and Bowdre) was determined by three men who were there and acted as pall bearers. This done about 1931 when the Pals memorial was installed, I believe. Deluvina Maxwell and Charlie Foor were also known for years (even after the flood) to show visitors to the Kid's grave, even when unmarked. The map from Charles Dudrow, when overlaid on the current cemetery shows that they got it almost perfectly, maybe off a foot or two but not much more. One of the three is in a separate row but right by the two others. So the bodies are there, just where they were buried. Research by author David G Thomas has brought all this to light, for anyone who wishes for sourcing. His books are readily available as well as interviews on youtube.

Great stuff, you make it really interesting. I'm intrigued by what happened to the child that Paula Maxwell allegedly had. I've also noticed that a couple of characters keep cropping up in other western legends. Jessie Evans and Dave Rudabaugh. Both get mentioned in association with Wyatt Earp Jessie James and Billie the kid.

Excellent work and a very straightforward and fair assessment especially considering all the smoke and mirrors that are involved. One thing for certain William Bonnie did not get a fair shake though he committed crimes, as did so many others in those Lincoln county wars, I'm basically ashamed that the governor of New Mexico, a former general officer in the United States army simply renege on the deal as far as Billy was concerned while a majority of the others on both sides were granted amnesty. And it was brought up in the other comment there's a lot of people in New Mexico that don't believe Pat Garrett's story will never really know but in a way even with all his misdeeds I would like to think maybe he got away and got to live the rest of his life in some Monicom peace

Wonderful story. But if Garrett killed the Kid then why didn't he put the body on display for at least two weeks 🤔?? Garrett was a lyer.

Great upload congrats on the series I don't personally believe Pat shot Billy or the body would of been photographed as was the norm at the time. The locals later claimed it wasn't billy I will believe them.

@@dogfacedsoldier327 there are 2 or Jesse death photos his gang was also photographed it was really common at the time as the photos could be sold and also provided proof for reward claims

It has been documented by New Mexico historians that there were only 4 photographers in all of the NM Territory at the time. The nearest to Fort Sumner was a 2-3 day ride each way. In the July heat, with no embalming available, a human body would have been mush by the time a photo could be taken. Garrett needed no such photo for proof, nor did the many dozens of locals who knew Billy and saw his body during a public wake, and attended his burial the next day. There are contemporary statements, interviews and such with many, and about 40 witnesses can be documented by name. They say the whole village attended the wake and burial. None ever changed their story, even upon being interviewed as late as 1940. The Coroner's Jury held was made up of both friends and foes of the Kid. No one had any reason to lie. And there were hundreds of dead outlaws in the old west days, only a few dozen were photographed. It was not the common thing as is often assumed.

I love this story BUT I have heard that Billy was shot in the face with Pat Garretts shotgun while Garrett lay in wait, not in Pete's bedroom but on the porch from under a cot. Therefore the body was identifiable and could have been Billies friend who shadowed Billy. The next day while the body was hastily burried, Billy's horse and all his traps were gone- did they burry Billy or was it his shadow? The thinking is Billy road away! We will probably never know!

I enjoyed this series but I don’t agree with the almost last thing you said. The river may have backed up into town, but there wouldn’t have been enough current to wash anything away.. I think that’s just an Interweb fabrication. Of course I could be wrong, I wasn’t there

Paulita is a fairy tale part of this story so that you will believe they killed billy ,because she married another man . But his sweetheart was garretts sister in law , celsa . And she mysteriously disappears in history after july 1881 , i believe billy and her ran off together when garrett shot the wrong man on the porch.
