seriously...my disabled friend watches little kids for three dollars an hour and almost never gets paid, and what does get paid goes right back to food and stuff for the kids. it's a really tough and frustrating situation, but they don't want to have the kids, completely unrelated to them, be neglected. there's no way daycare could be afforded and apparently no one else to babysit. edit typo

@Just Me, not trying to come across as condescending thing but there are always so many people with best of intentions that have NO CLUE what they’re talking about unless you have a specific, career adjacent job/career where you see heartbreaking situations like this everyday. It’s not about “forgiving a baby killer” of course there should be some sort of reprimand whether this was intentional or criminally negligent homicide. The issue comes in when the news sensationalizes assumptions and does what the media does to drawn people in emotionally as it VASTLY increases their revenue margins. That being said: I’m a nurse that has nearly a decade of experience in pediatric medicine. I have coworkers and dear friends that have been nurses, doctors, surgeons, techs etc that can tell you, as tragic as this is….Forensic Pathologists exist for this VERY same reasoning. It is why the law states one is innocent until PROVEN guilty as to avoid double jeopardy and also ensure that if she is an evil, worthless, sack of shxt masquerading as a human, it’s heart wrenching but absolutely IMPERATIVE that the experts and people in charge can ensure she receives the amount of punishment and relinquishing of freedom she deserves. Sadly, SIDS is capable of near instantaneous death or brain damage if babies forget to breathe or perhaps are sleeping/playing in an area that isn’t childproof and they may try to flip around to get more comfortable…silently and accidentally cut off their ability to breathe. AGAIN, that is NO ONES FAULT. This woman clearly has the trust of MOST of not ALL of the parents that drop off their precious children every day so that they can make a living and compensate her for all she does to keep them safe, keep things more affordable and convenient for the families as well. HOWEVER, having a license has absolutely NO BARRING on whether a caretaker is competent. In my state you can get licensed to work in a daycare or the elderly in 2 weeks or less of crappy ass so called training. That should TERRIFY most people, but as a collective we don’t bat an eye or pay it any mind that level of lack of preparedness is BOUND to end in tragedy some day. Same with doctors, nurses, etc…we are all HIGHLY trained individuals….mostly always surrounded by other practitioners that have lifetimes worth of knowledge and experience. But just because they have all these credentials and experience it does NOT in any way shape or form prevent this kind of thing from happening!!! I have great sympathy and sadness for the family who lost what was most precious to them. But if the situation had occurred at home where mom is a SAHW with 5-6 other little ones under the age of 10, well…..it CAN and DOES happen and most times the parents don’t receive this same scrutiny even though it is ALSO not very well known that some cases of SIDS are really just sociopathic, murderous monsters that have smothered, drowned or done even worse things to rid themselves of their children. I am not perfect, so as a healthcare professional and someone with a chronic, genetic illness…I have extensive experience of perspective from living both sides of it. And either way, it never takes the pain away from everyone that cherished the precious life of the little one that is no longer on this side of things. There are many safeguards that could’ve been used to try and prevent this, but in hindsight it doesn’t matter because you can’t go back and do things differently you can only try to become better in the future. In the mean time I don’t judge folks, I just pray for peace that surpasses understanding and wishing healing for everyone involved. Anything else is really just filler and emotional outrage and since we are based on reality here that contributes nothing worthwhile to such a tragic situation it just placates the people who don’t realize how self righteous their presumptions are and that’s really sad.

I was about to say this. I think many here aren't aware of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). So many babies suddenly die in their sleep, before they reach a year old. There are many things you can do to try and prevent it from happening, but unfortunately there is no definite garauntee of preventing it. Sounds like that's what happened. That doesn't excuse what the carer did afterwards, but I assume she knew she was in trouble for the illegal daycare.

Illegal/unlicensed day care centers exist everywhere in this country. A situation like this is nothing new. Affordable, high quality childcare is a great need in this country. And yes, even in a quality childcare center an infant teacher can have as many as 7 infants. The difference is he or she will also have support staff to assist her when needed. The director and other teachers are there to give he/she a lunch break, cook and bring in meals for babies ready for finger food and also cover if an emergency situation occurs. There are some very wonderful people who don't need to be in an environment where others are always watching to make sure that quality care is provided. Yet, we see too often that some do. My cousin ran a baby sitting service out of her home. She had developed such an outstanding reputation, that her business was on the cusp of where she could have turned it into a daycare service. But her husband was getting seriously ticked off that she was not only making money in her own right but that her income was to match, and potentially surpass his if she opened a daycare facility. Something he did not like in the slightest.

As someone who does not have children I have a question.... How come there's no daycares at school ....???like it could be Elementary School ...that consists of kindergarten through sixth grade.... And then maybe a daycare in a separate building on campus.... And that way, maybe it could be made affordable for the parents that way?? And you could have two separate daycares ...one building for the kids that have siblings in that school would go to that one... and then the other building would be for obviously babies that don't go to school yet, and that the parents do not have any other children in that school....

My job wouldn’t allow me to take weekends off nor could I find a job that worked with daycare hours. I had this lady my daycare provider suggested watching my daughter.. eventually I found out my daughter was not safe or being well taken care of this has happened twice to me. Thank god I was able to find a Work From Home job and no longer had to rely on daycares and babysitters. You’d be surprised how unsafe and weird people are with kids. I feel empathy for mothers like me who didn’t really have any support and did what they had to do so there children can have basic necessities. It’s rough out here. Prayers to her mother.

So many people condemning the day care woman without any details is very concerning. The child could have had medical issues already. It could have been SIDS. The parents have some responsibility in leaving a child with someone looking after so many children who are so young. We don't even know how old the carer is but her reaction to this tragedy was very immature and extreme. It's obvious by her reaction that she was distraught about what happened. Please don't replace sorrow with hate, that's an awful legacy for the child and parents.

34 years ago and I had my first child I can remember how expensive childcare was and a friend of mine was doing the same thing. I think that you can only have five children without having a license but I remember I didn't leave my child there very long. She left her in a playpen all the time so I started taking my daughter to work. I was lucky that I had my own office but by the time she was 5-6 months I had to find a sitter. But I went through two more sitters until I quit my job. It was awful not knowing what was going on during the day and I can tell there was a difference. My daughter didn't wake up happy any longer. One day the sitter told me that she had made her pick up her Cheerios because she had thrown them off of the high chair. I was horrified. That means she wasn't with her at the high chair and probably left her there for a long time. Children throw things off their high chairs. But she made her pick them up. 18 months, you know that she was crying!

Very unfortunate. The reality is, no one will care for your own children like you will. No one will ensure the life and safety of your own children as you will. Now I know this is about money, right? Always is. We need 2 incomes…the pros outweigh the cons for childcare….No it doesn’t, was the few extra hundred dollars a month worth your child’s life? Was it worth the remainder of your life being changed forever? You can’t be so naive that you think you’re the luckiest person in the world that won’t fall victim and be a statistic. These stories a real and not rare. Happens too often. Do better parents. It’s our job to ensure our child’s safety. Not a family member, not a day care worker, not a nanny, not a public school teacher, put your trust in you and the mother of the child. That’s all I trust. Either my wife or myself. I only have one life, my daughters only have one life, it won’t be mishandled by anyone I can’t rely on to protect my children’s life as I would.

Lucky people have their mother to babysit for them, or another very close relative in the family. Beyond that, it’s very risky. Not impossible. But you gotta really take your time and find a safe babysitter who will not harm or abuse your child in any way. In fact, mothers set cameras up in their house, to watch someone they hire to be at her home, or her child left with relatives in the her home.
