I guess Kishimito, the author, just couldn't find a better way to include the last battle between Naruto and Sasuke into the finale Maybe Sasuke was still wavering, just pretending and keeping his desire for revolution on the backburner while he focused on the bigger threat, Kaguya, because she could've meant the end of the world right then and there They had to stop her, and Sasuke himself wanted it too - because she would destroyed the Shinobi world, while he just wanted to rule over it I will say that this whole fight felt kinda misplaced, but it definitely was necessary - everyone and their mother knew back then that Naruto and Sasuke still had yet to fight their last fight Closure needed to be provided, but it couldn't have happened until after Kaguya was dealt with, as unfortunate as that is - which is why so many fans are still adamant about the fact that her entire character was unnecessary, even to this day Many argue that Madara should've been the proper conclusion to the 4th Ninja War, and Sasuke could have his moment after that But it is what is, and Naruto is still an amazing series (including Shippuden), despite its many faults

@@an18yearoldmongolianguy Oh, no doubt, I still think it is a brilliant series, despite my nitpicks. Jokes aside, I felt it was perfectly clear that Sasuke hadn't reformed yet, rather he understood that if Kaguya succeeded, there'd be no world for him to rule or personally destroy, thereby made a pragmatic choice to cooperate with Naruto. Though, as you noted, it did feel forced to execute their final fight immediately after the apocalyptic threat. The Kaguya fight had a lot of interesting powers, but I think I do lean in the camp that believed that Madara should have been the final threat, since there was so much build up and lore around him, only to shove him aside for a Diabolus ex Machina. My cynical mind considered that the most thematic way the final fight would end would be the deaths of both Naruto and Sasuke, especially since there were numerous hints it would go that way, but if it went that way, no sequel series. I mean, personally I don't mind that it didn't end in mutual death, considering the series had so much tragedy, it'd be a downer to end on another tragedy, no matter how poignant it might be. Also, arguably Kaguya herself was a piece of the sequel hook, since it excused an expansion of the existing mythos, so that technically Boruto wouldn't be a rehash. There are other character decisions that I entirely disagree with and think only happened as to have stuff for the sequel. Like Sakura's entire character arc was utterly tossed aside, so she would remain helplessly in love with a guy who not only never liked her, but also tried to kill her more than once - I mean, Orochimaru of all people, was a reason Sasuke didn't murder her. That said, I'm fine with her forgiving him and even being a friend, but wife? That was absurd. Going back to thematic options that weren't followed, at least completely. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura were clearly successors to the Legendary Sannin, and they each had one as a mentor. Reasonably, the end would be them becoming better versions of their teachers. It was fulfilled with Naruto, since unlike Jiraiya, he was able to bring into being a better more peaceful world, and he found true love, rather than Pervy Sage, who couldn't get the one he loved, so settled on countless flings that meant nothing. Sasuke achieved the pinnacle of power and knowledge like Orochimaru aimed, but instead of conquest, used it to ultimately help protect the new peaceful world. Sakura became a master medical ninja, but unlike Tsunade, none of her closest relationships ended in tragedy - BUT, making Sasuke and Sakura a couple undermines their arcs, since to atone for his criminal actions, he should have lived the rest of his life alone, and the Uchiha clan ended with him, just like Itachi realised. Sakura returning to being a mewling school girl removed her development to independence, as she regressed into being the same whimpering child again, pining for an absentee Sasuke. It'd be fine if she married someone, just not hm; it'd make more sense for her to even marry Rock Lee, really, since he was always kind and loyal.

Dont forget Naruto was holding back in 99% of this entire fight because he didn't want to kill Sasuke. The only time Naruto had to get a little serious was when Sasuke used the tailed beast chakra.
