So ideally what I got from this video is Infiniti focused in styling and the engine for the Q50 and the G37 was more of a well rounded car for it's time, being a sports luxury sedan with good quality for the time, simplistic engine bay yet still fairly powerful, etc. I love the Q50's look and hopefully the VR can hold up to reliability as it did replace the VQ which other than the water pump being a pain (they dont fail often though, they seem to last when you maintain the cooling system), the engine was fairly easy to work on if you have the mechanical ability. G37: more bang for the buck, good engine, owner can work on it with a little know how, timeless design (no other car looks like it), reliability, decent MPG and a good transmission (it really is, just.. the software is kinda stupid sometimes). Good sports sedan. Q50: newer look, new potent engine for tuning, reliability in question (it's only been around like 3 years?), more of a lease car unless you feel experienced and confident enough to own it and work on it. Probably more reliable then a BMW. New features. Decent MPG for what you're getting. Good Sports sedan. I'm more of a G37 guy. I own one and find it good to work on myself. And I guess I'm somewhat biased towards it because I do love the car. But I wont look at the Q50 as a non potential car to own as I feel I can learn to work on it and keep it running. Itll be more expensive to run it but to me, it's still a really good car. But I'll be honest.. I think that if I ever went Q, I'd get the 3.7 model as I already know the engine pretty well. Who knows, I should test drive and look at the VR before I make opinions on it. Great video btw!!!

Great video you made on comparing the two cars. I have the G37x and I prefer the simple set up. I believe in a long run, the twin turbos and the steering clutch in the Q could definitely be the sources of trouble. The cramped arrangement in the Q could also be troublesome, not all mechanics are like you with a lot of experience and if they have to take off a lot of components to get the source of trouble, chances are they would mess up along the way and ended up causing more problems. Usually the owner will not be able to prove that and eventually the owner will be paying for the mistakes.

Definitely the G37. I worked for Infinity a few years ago 2014 when the Q50 first arrived. They still had the faithful 3.7 VQ motor with 328-330hp. Idk why they decided to change to a small less powerful engine 😣. Seeing how compact the new Q50 engine bay is I'll buy a 300ZX TT before the new Q50 😉

This was an outstanding informative video. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I learned a lot. I agree with the comments of the interior. Infiniti needs to pick it up or they are going to loose customer's. Which is happening if you looks at overall sales. Again, good job!!

As a G coupe owner who recently did the valve cover replacement and had the engine half apart, and recently tore down the interior when doing a double din and repainted most of the interior, I still love my G. Put about 5k miles a year on it, its garaged.... it is timeless. Was recently tempted to pick up a Q and maybe one day I will but looking at the engine, it makes me think twice.. The G is timeless and still a very, very fun car. Just wish it had push to start and may do a suspension upgrade in the spring. Car has 110k miles on it now. Have had it for nearly 14 years. On a side note, was looking at some of the Lexus a few years ago.. 80k for some of them and you know what, I said this looks worse than my G. It's going to be hard to get me to go buy something new. It really is. Although I do like the iPace and even the Murano.

speedkar99 I guess it depends how many miles you put on it a year. I have found them to be pretty reliable though. (Knock on wood). I mean they have their quirks like the drivers side rip tear that needs reupholstering over the years and the valve covers eventually all go on these engines but other than that just a battery. But yeah I can see people wanting the newer tech and nicer gauges and fancier interior if you will but ehhh even when the day comes that the new “daily driver” comes wishing will probably be a Jeep Murano or IPace the G will always have a parking spot in the garage or driveway. Glad to see you have a love of the G and Q series as well. They are and always will be a very nice car. Happy New Year!

From the comments, I can only fathom the "hate" for the Q50 (also Q60) with the VR30 engine is because you don't own/lease/drive one. Properly modified (primarily consisting of an Ecutek tune, FI exhaust, and AMS heat exchanger upgrades), my '17 Q60 Red Sport AWD puts down just under 450 WHP & just over 500 WTQ w/93 octane pump gas on a DynoJet AWD dyno. Real-world performance with a 0-60 at just over 4 seconds, again on 93 octane pump gas. I've about burned-down the crappy Dunlop RFTs that came equipped from factory (weight of the OEM wheel & tire? 62 lbs!), so handling will only get better in the future with the installation of a set of lw wheels & tires. As for servicing, I perform my own oil & filter changes - installed AMS intakes, FI exhaust, Mishimoto CC, Stillen RSB, and ST BBK by myself. If you un-bolt and push-aside the ICs, you can access the coil packs and spark plugs. when needed. At almost 25k miles, my VR30 burns no oil between oil changes, w/5k OCIs. With the addition of a Flex-fuel kit, an AMS LPFP & HPFP, and Nostrum FI., the VR30 can relaibly perform on corn fuel (E85), which can get the output closer to 550 WHP/WTQ, 0-60 under 4 seconds, and the 1/4 mile in the low 11s. Not too shabby in my book...

Totally agreed. I have a red sport 400 as well and I love how the video says that the horsepower is only 300. Sure, if you want to compare the BASE 3.0 t Q50 to the g37 but you should at least state the full facts. The top model Q50 has 400hp out of the box. And also, the VR series is not just about more power, it's also a much smoother engine. I've owned a g37 and a 350Z so I'm no stranger to Nissan/Infiniti and I loved them all, but I just hate it when videos don't fully disclose everything. The only thing I hear in this video and comments is the turbos are not going to be reliable so get the g37....yah great analysis. Here's a wake-up call, most cars have turbos today. Deal with it or keep buying old cars that were naturally aspirated. I'm good with whatever you prefer but again, just state all the facts so the video is informative.

Man thanks for that in-depth review, man that q does looks like a spaghetti nightmare. I do like the simpler N/A larger engines over the turbo small engines. Having own a turbo'd engine car in the past and dealing with daily maintenance such as oil change and other thing associated with dealing with turbos to me wasn't worth the trouble and with my driving dynamics don't see the benefits fuel economy wise. I'm the kind of person that do my own repairs. I like cars that I can get access to components in the engine bay. Worked on older Hondas, Nissans and Toyotas. I've had toyotas in the past and virtually no issues, got a 350z and then a G37. Maintenance level is more on my speed. With prior experience with VQ's I knew the G37 was good for me. This VR30DTT sounds good and may make good numbers in the 400hp version but I can't imagine this thing 5 to 7 years down the road used having to replace stuff. But yah for me G37. unless it's the Q50 with the 3.7 liter.

Great review of both cars. Really enjoy your detailed explanations and time to look at almost everything. I agree with you 100% the twin turbo is a mess. I believe the Q50t will be a major money and time sink once it gets some age. I feel for the folks buying a used one thinking it’s a good deal. It’s a shame they engineered such a poor design for maintenance. Guess longevity and durability are no longer a priority. The old G likely sounds and drives better anyway.

I’m not knocking the engineering chops it took to jam all the plumbing and equipment to manage and feed two turbos in a compact form factor. I emphasize it’s a poor design from the perspective of maintenance and having to work on the car after manufacture. It’s almost as they have the expectation if there’s a problem you just replace the engine as an assembly. Guess time will tell.
