On the note of risk transference, there are some situations where you can concievably transfer risk to your opponent. Potential examples include: - Dicey CC rolls you do not want to spend orders on, but is opportune to be in to tie up an enemy piece (e.g. dodging/moving a cheap high CC model into a bearpode) you might not spend any orders dealing with the issue in your active turn, to transfer the risk of that F2F to your opponent. - Leaving camoflagued/impersonator pieces in marker state in your opponents DZ where it will cost them 2-3 orders to deal with it. Rather than taking the risk of an attack run, you transfer the risk to your opponent to deal with. It's worth considering how you can transfer/increase the risk profile of your opponent by handing off risks for them to deal with :)

I think those plays work more under the resource management mentality. That's not to say that it's doesn't work at all under risk management, but it's more about forcing your opponent to spend their resources (orders) to get the same result from if you were to spend them.

I think this is clearly internalized for long-term players, and this just spells out what we know in our hearts lol. New players look for kills, old players look for objectives. Recently I won a game 10-1 and had nearly zero models on the table and he had most of his. It was HARD for me to let it go as I watched my expensive pieces get sacrificed, but I knew I had to stay on task. Good video, thanks.

The infinity community needs a lot more content like this. So I'm super grateful you're making it. Since you were wondering in one of your comments if you should do a video on common best practices in Infinity: Yes please! I've already learned so much from your battle reports, but formalizing it into a few "If I take a piece like this, I try to deploy it like this and use it like this" etc. would be SO helpful. Cheers!

Great video. I found it interesting that it definitely relating to things I've been taught at work, but in the context of of prioritizing which problems we will address rather than the risks we choose to take. One way risk materializes in other games that is very relevant to Infinity is in the form of positioning. Making an attack and getting the "nothing" result can also mean that the unit you did it with is now in a vulnerable position, so the risk way higher than you may have thought. This is also true for assessing what to do with the last few orders of your turn. An important question that comes up in most games is whether to stretch to try to get an extra kill or two or to pull back to put your attack piece(s) into a better position. Another consideration is that the models with a high likelihood of success tend to also have a higher severity of failure, simply because of the disposability piece. TAGs get around this somewhat with durability, but a lot of those 30ish point 1W gunfighters can put up extremely big numbers, but also are a relatively big investment that might just get crit and die.

100% true on all fronts. The risk/opportunity assessment on extending vs withdrawing an assault piece especially is often one of the most important decisions in Infinity.

On the risk reduction front - I think the thing you gloss over is considering the cost of the risk reduction as part of whether you’re going to reduce or accept the risk. If I am shooting at a linked missile launcher, for example, is it one order to move to a better range band for me, or is it four or five orders? That leads to very different decisions about what risk reductions to take.

As a non-infinity player, but someone who loves the analytical side of games, this video was very helpful. Coming from an army background and being oh so familiar with matrices like this, applying them to games could be hugely beneficial. Not to beat a dead horse from my comments on other videos, but really would love to see general strategy, and conceptual videos just like this one, but regarding ASOIAF. Thanks for another great video!

great video- I really enjoy this format. tbh I could listen to this sort of thing for a lot longer than half an hour, but potentially YT isnt the right medium, idk. as an aside- I would love one of these focusing on different marker states - how to use them effectively and how to deal with your opponents markers

This is fantastic, thanks. I would add that we also assess risk management in my field in terms of administrative and engineering controls. These apply heavily in infinity as well: list building is an engineering control: bringing tools to deal with bears, or engineers for your tag would be examples. Administrative controls are standard procedures to address risks, appear in terms of when to use or save command tokens, or making sure you save orders to return to camo. I'd be curious for your thoughts about these higher levels of risk management.
@R0bertShepherd
@R0bertShepherd Жыл бұрын
So things like administrative or structural controls are measures I actually wanted to avoid going into in the video for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it's starting to stray beyond my level of expertise - I know a fair bit about Infinity, but a lot of what I presented here is about as much as I can confidently explain to a layperson. But secondly, although the majority of the underlying principles map very clearly from one field to another (in fact your comment is an example - I understood what you were talking about despite the fact that I'm a procurement and contracting professional, not an engineer) but I wanted to avoid stretching from relatively core, concrete principles, into analogy. I think you could actually very reasonably describe a lot of the basic positional plays that many players make as procedural controls. A *very* simple example is that it's pretty common to deploy everything but a few models prone. I could call this a procedural control, or a standard operating procedure, or a lesson learned, but those are all ways of saying: "I've had standing models get shot from angles I didn't see way too many times so if in doubt I'll have everything hunkered down as low as possible". (...a video on random good common practice in Infinity could actually be a whole separate topic though, if potentially a bit scattered. Hmmm.)
@rdleib
@rdleib Жыл бұрын
@@R0bertShepherd I think you did a fine job of it, and the analogy/analysis holds up well. No need to try to cover all of it in one video, of course. Standard operating procedures (like your example of always be prone) are _the_ classic administrative control. Good players build these procedures into their strategy to offset risk (put warbands on corners, always check your facing at the end of a movement, etc) and as you say could be their own video. Engineering controls are about controlling the terms on which you will do the work (in this case, play infinity). So list building so you have the right tools available is a big piece, but also knowing what to expect from different types of tables, or from a given opponent army when choosing your lists at the game. These are also a big part of the game, and have an impact in where you are likely to operate in the risk matrix during play.

Given this video on Risk Reduction and avoiding Catastrophic Failure, instances would you consider the Bronze HMG to be a decent piece for sweeping enemy ARO pieces?
@R0bertShepherd
@R0bertShepherd Жыл бұрын
In a vacuum it enjoys the extremely rare position of being a piece that can relatively safely engage an enemy linked missile launcher or heavy rocket launcher and *not* have to be too concerned about a genuinely catastrophic failure. But at 55pts it's a challenging inclusion in lists, so it's presence means a sacrifice of some other capability somewhere else (or, it's a compromise because you couldn't afford a zeta and an engineer. I'm currently deep in the tank testing Starmada lists and it hasn't made the cut yet, but it potentially could under the right circumstances.
@mattbissell7409
@mattbissell7409 Жыл бұрын
@Robert Shepherd yeah it is quite expensive for what it does but the risk of it dying to an enemy ARO piece is extremely low. It also has the added benefit of being able to take on enemy Flash Pulse bots without risk of being stunned. I really want to try it in a Duo with a Betatrooper Doctor, for that rare occurrence when it does take a wound and go down.
