I saw on Twitter that there were no self-reported dominant INFJ's - so had to come over here to represent. (Not sure I've ever commented on a KZbin video before...) I mistyped as an ENFJ for over a decade and had a brief INTJ-curious moment. Realizing I was an INFJ (by examining my preferences for each cognitive function very closely) was a true light bulb moment, and this podcast was a similar experience in that the detailed extent to which I identified with the dominant (and secondarily, creative) description was truly breath-taking. My career is international human rights development and law (years of travel, language learning, writing and research) - a super "weirdo" type of law that is extremely creative, dynamic and interpersonal (within the legal field), and also aspires to transform the world by promoting more humane norms across societies. A+ on this episode, as usual! 😊

@@Personalityhacker I definitely see all 4. I feel in my current role I’ve had to play more of the Dominant type, since I’ve been leading a team and fellow managers often have trouble over-accommodating and being too agreeable, it just seems what the team needs. But I really want to lean more into my artistic side, and yearn to eventually get to the more harmonizing/sage side. I’ve sometimes been tempted for a more normalizing job, where I don’t invest my whole soul into work but that then preserves more energy for my more creative and spiritual goals that I don’t have energy for as a team manager. It might be interesting to explore how others’ types, especially coworkers, can shape our own subtypes.

I'm an INFJ psychiatrist and personal development coach... Good with written and spoken word... Kind of like an audience but don't love it (yet I've done 16 podcast episodes and about 10 videos of me interviewing women whose stories may inspire others)... People always seem to see a spark in me in the workplace, even when I think I'm just being a 'normal' employee... I start creative ventures but don't follow through (e.g. wrote a children's book that got published but then wasn't bothered to market it 😅)... I see myself as 35% Dominant, 35% Normalising, 30% Harmonising... Is that allowed?! If not, then I'll go with Dominant... I think I could pass for ENFJ or INTJ. I definitely burn out after a while and need to recuperate before I can get back up again. I have an INFJ friend who is a Creative - KZbinr, traveller (digital nomad as 9-5 was too mundane), loves learning languages, creative flow is very important to her.

Dear Joel & Antonia This episode was such an Aha! moment for me 💡I took notes as you were explaining each subtype and related to a few traits of each one until you got to the harmonizing Subtype . It felt like you were reading my autobiography. So when I was younger I was almost certain I was a creative especially Auditory , I was certain I’d do well in a communication/languages careers . So I enrolled for a degree in Journalism , but to my surprise while studying I felt so much inner turmoil and conflict like this was the opposite of what I should be pursuing . I did not want to put my writing out there , I cringe at the thought of a microphone or camera (even posting my own pics is hard) .So I quit and started working in Sales and marketing, so I had to adopt to a normalizing and dominant subtype environment and career, but that was brutal for me it sent me straight into a depression. I hate Corporate , I’m people focused. So now, I am going in the direction of Christian ministry and also pursuing studies in Psychology and counseling. I am “The Sage” . I thank you guys for this insight because you’ve just given me perspective to things that made me feel weird like being unable to articulate and communicate my thoughts and my passive nature . I wasn’t always this way but I’ve evolved into this subtype over the years and I feel like I’m living my purpose . I do struggle with day-to-day mundane life , I have very strong values and I definitely apply a holistic approach to every aspect of my life . This is me , I’m a Harmonizing INFJ .

I'm unequivocally a dominant type, with some traits of the creative subtype. Consistency is so difficult for me, in anything that I do. I have avoided choosing a career because I've never known where I want to be, but lately I find myself gravitating towards creativity and wanting to write. Literally hate my job and I feel bad for it cos I went to study for it, had I known myself earlier I wouldn't have wasted all that money on that

I relate to every subtype here, and it tends to sway at different eras of my life. Was a high achiever academically at school, in mathematics, science and English subjects, but simultaneously creative which I have dedicated my career to by being a sole trader. Often the person to give advice to friends, but easily overwhelmed by everyday tasks. Also quite bold and will call people out and apparently come across as confident to others while I’m second guessing myself in my own mind. It’s a very confusing way to be, which is why I seek these sorts of videos out. A blessing and a curse to be an INFJ, it’s hard but I kind of love it which is of course very INFJ!

I have never heard anyone well really know me know me but never heard anyone describe me better than I could express it. That second one- every part of it I do. That is insane. If INFJ is the rarest then how many in each subgroup cos I gotta find my tribe & built a Land Ark high on a mountain with a fresh water supply artists & sensitives sanctuary you know. I spent my entire life hating myself feeling like an alien & outcast & then I came here I learned that I am not alone. Others exist. Thank you🙏

I strongly relate to the Creative, Normalizing and Harmonizing subtypes and I'm currently developing traits of the Dominant subtype. I guess my career path demonstrates that as well. I studied Visual Arts and was a painter but felt 'lost' as I lacked structure (typical Creative challenge:) and a voice (Lack of dominant traits you could say). I worked as a freelance journalist for a decade (in which career choice I recognize Normalizing and Creative subtype traits: curiosity, perpetual learning, self-management and perseverance, driven by recognition) but eventually I leaned too heavily on my perseverance and that exhausted me. So I took a break and flexed into the corporate world (Normalizing traits) but I feel bored by the lack of creativity, authenticity, and critical thinking (at the level where I am at) so I'm plotting my exit once more:) I am dedicated to concoct a career or lifestyle that combines as many traits as mentioned in your video as possible, because I find it very exciting to express and develop both dominant, creative, normalizing and harmonizing traits (following your 4 types model here). Also, I am usually most interested in projects that are on the crossroads of several sectors (theatre and journalism such as re-enactment, a corporate shaman, you get it..) On the other hand, it's a daunting task to integrate everything into one career and I'm afraid I'll get shattered if I do everything simultaneously. (Being a counsellor on Monday, an artist on Tuesday, a podcaster on Wednesday,..) Does anyone else have any experience or thoughts on combining multiple professions? Especially on how to organize it..

this episode is absolutely great! I totally found myself in the creative subtype. I'm an engineer of architecture, but I'm more into interior design because it gives me more space for creativity and a little less responsibility than if I were designing, let's say, office buildings. I have an absolute intolerance for all mundane duties and I am only able to do them with headphones on, listening to various educational podcasts. I am absolutely addicted to new information. When I don't have new insights, I tend to fall into depression. At work I enjoy finding solutions visually, by drawing. I love learning foreign languages. I speak Czech, Spanish, English, German, I have also learned Italian, French and even Hebrew. For a few years I was not sure about determining if I was an ENFP or an INFJ because I found in myself the cognitive functions of an INFJ, but the overall flavor seemed more of an ENFP. I didn't consider INFP so much because I was pretty sure my dominant function must be intuition. During the eight years I spent with my kids at home and working only on a limited basis I probably moved up to the harmonizing subtype. But it didn't suit me quite well. It did brought its gifts (a channel to the unconscious seemed to open up, different visions and insights came to me in dreams, etc.), but I found it hard to bring them out from inside to the outside world. And I also started to become a bit more passive, more indecisive, as if I lacked any direction, and my sensitivity became quite difficult to bear. But during your recent interview with Dario Nardi, I realized what was going on and that introverted intuition in its analytical form still was available to me. So I started consciously leaning towards the creative subtype again, and now I realize that I've made a big shift in that direction since then (which also goes hand in hand with working more in design and caring a little less for the kids). In the future I would like to continue working as an interior designer, but I would also like to combine it with painting... and I would like to find a way how to use my ability to understand people. I realize now that my knowledge in psychology, philosophy, MBTI and Enneagram is slowly becoming more extensive than that in architecture and I would like to use it for helping people to understand better themselves. That's my big dream! Thank you Antonia, Joel and Dario so much for all the valuable information that helps me to find more balance and more satisfaction in my life. You guys are awesome!

Interesting! I’m not done listening to everything, but I’m absolutely moving in the direction of the bold INFJ. Ive been a recruiter(helped tremendously to get out of my shell, i was SO timid), did job fairs etc, and now i’m an HR officer as well as a teacher. And I’m actually good at it and enjoying it. I don’t see myself in a leadership position, at least not yet, but i could see it happening in the future. I still like to be in the background, but i can see that it helps others when i take the front. And ultimately that could be why i do take the lead. Talking about testosterone- i have had problems with that, producing too much and having to take pills to reduce it. Go figure. I don’t agree with being more dominant as we’re young. Becoming dominant was quite the task and didn’t come natural at all. I have parts of all 4, but i’d say mostly creative before.

What Joel said ring true to me, about finding yourself in the normalizing subtype due to the surrounding environment and Fe taking in and wanting to align with these expectations. In my case, growing up with SJ parents might have added to that. I think I migth've been more "normalizing" throughout school and university and while living with my parents. I think I'm starting to move somewhat out of that (maybe to somewhat more of a dominant flavor, at times), and I also feel like I don't have as much "stamina" to putting out so much resource to handle the more demanding tasks such as making reports, studying a lot, etc. I feel tired of it, although I can get to it when I have to.

Great podcast as always:) As a fellow INFJ, I find myself mostly as a harmonizing type firstly, secondly creative and lastly domintant. I'm pretty much lacking normalising skills which I envy, cause I struggle to live in a society as a normie. But interstingly enough I found that being creative is more accpetable/understandble/admirable than being harmonizing subtype which is kinda not recognize as something valueble (well only if you are proffesional psychologist for example), and as a woman being more in dominant space is not quite well understood by people around either cause it's seen as - well... dominant over others & not agreeable like other woman mostly are. But from my own experience - still dominant is more valuble even if it's more "masculine" trait than being harmonizing type, which is kinda in the backround/not seen/not heard- or heard only by few. But it can simply be that masculine traits simply put- are overall seen as more valuble than feminine traits in our society (religion, culture etc.). I sometimes purposly mix my dominant & harmonizing skills to find balance between yin/yang or feminine/masculine traits which I both possesed. Creative is whole another level of being which still kinda is without label like masculine/feminine and more like "God force" as I like to call it, it has no gender it's just God speaking through you by whatever creative thing you are doing - for me it would be talking/thinking/analizing about ideas, singing or painting.

Thanks guys, I really enjoyed this. I think it's been most eye opening concerning understanding myself since reading "A Mind At A Time". For me it looks that I operate to some degree in each of the four sub-types. My career has brought me to become a Software Engineer, now at a Sr level. I am also an ordained minister, song writer musician, and an artist with a huge appetite for learning...each appear to reflect each of the sub-types without being contradictory to each other. I'd say that my Operating System, so to speak, is INFJ with each of the four operating modes available and with my default mode being the Creative type. I've even found that software development has been a great creative outlet and I approach it as I do developing and composing a song. I've even recommended musicians I know to look into software development as a career path. I've always gravitated to creative work and work that helps people, and have historically become very frustrated with the mundane and perfunctory

I'm an Enneagram Tritype nerd and am an Enneagram SO 461 Tritype, if that means anything to you. It not-- it should! I suspect a big correlation between these subtypes and Enneagram Tritypes. I'm absolutely certain I'm an INFJ. (I love Elaine Shallock's posts. ) I'm somewhat sure that I'm a Dominant INFJ. However-- I don't feel much of a connection to the Normalizing subtype, and feel more crossover with Creative. Career Story: It took me till midlife to figure out that I wanted to teach and eventually went the alternate certification route (Liberal Arts background). I'm a retired English (mainly literature and writing) teacher, and I absolutely hated having to try to manage the whole political, hierarchically-structured (typical) school system. I'm now tutoring kids online via an online platform and love my freedom, with the opportunity to connect with kids/families all over the US (and even the world) while effecting change with individual kiddos who need me.

This is extremely informative and well done. Thank you for sharing. I’m delightfully confused now as I might not be an INTJ, but a harmonising INFJ who is in an environment which necessitates the activation of a dominant subset… though, on reflection, the genuine propensity for unintended arrogance and unpalatable emotional responses still suggests INTJ more than turbulent/ immature (or just rude) INFJ 🤔 One key word I heard in your presentation is ‘trust’. How do different types/ subtypes manage to continue functioning after losing trust? For me, trust is the bridge between the individual and others that once is burnt, is burnt.

Exceptional and deeply insightful work. Thank you. I do have the ability to use the other subtypes besides creative, but I don't like being in those spaces for too long, though resting in harmonizing is less "difficult" than moving to dominant or normalizing. They are more used as tools for the "self-parenting" that I need. (boundaries, getting things done, effective communication) I'm definitely a creative subtype and am moving towards, as Joel says, "platform thinking", as 9-5ism is my personal creative suicide. Fe being in receptive mode is the most difficult for me to shift out of & when my Ni is in assertive mode I feel alive and most "like me".

Thank you both, this was interesting. As an INFJ I would say I fit mostly into the "harmonizing" subtype. No one has ever made me their shrink, though my 10-year-old comes to me all the time. I don't trust anybody. I hide my talents as well as my defects. Saying I need to find someone to market me is like telling me to find a needle in the haystack. I can't even imagine there would be someone willing to market me and my talents. Without lawyers, guns, and money, people are of no help to the INFJ. Their idea of help is to make one into an extraverted, busybody sensor, with a focus on the face value of things, and thoughtless springing into action. But now I know to keep a lookout for some other harmonizing and dominant subtypes.

I think I have pieces of all 4 in different levels. 1) normalizing/harmonizing 2) creative 3) dominant. I can do the repetitive/mundane all day long. I go from deep in the weeds to 50,000 ft back to the weeds and tend to see the big picture with a different perspective than those around me (engineers which I am not, but I understand what they are doing). Because of my different perspective I get brought into a lot of different projects, to the point of being overwhelmed (burned out or depressed). But I offer unique resourceful solutions. When I get overwhelmed I tend to withdraw to focus on the mundane I can do without much thought. I have been with my employer 42 years, 20 in my current position. Because of the unbearable overload I recently submitted my retirement papers. I feel it’s premature at age 62, but my employer will not assist by supplementing staff, paying overtime or taking some things off the plate. Time to think of me. After a recent early retirement program of which I was left out it’s time for an INFJ Door Slam.

This was very interesting to contemplate. Even though, as an INFJ, I can see bits of all subtypes within my personality. However, I can definitely see that my first 20 years of life I was the dominant subtype. The next 20 years after that, I was harmonizing. After turning 40 and the seven years that have passed, I feel a bit like a Jekyll and Hyde. I’m dominant yet harmonizing. The dominant can get in the way because I can be so outspoken when I feel that I’m getting stepped on or someone else is being stepped on. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m in midlife (hormonal changes, and empty nester), and this is normal or if there’s another reason for it.

this is the first time I'm hearing about subtypes in MBTI. Quiet interesting. I resonate more with the Harmonizing Sub-type. IDK if anyone made a similar point but I can't help but think of enneagram. I've tested as a 2 when I first did a test but now I'm a 6w5. They're almost all like a transition or fading into other sub groups. 🤷🏿‍♂️

So as I'm processing this, the big picture I'm assembling in my mind from all the various pieces I think I remember hearing y'all say, the Creative and Normalizing subtypes each have both a holistic and an analytic function; one that flows inward, and the other that flows outward. To me, this sounds like it forms its own state of balance which maybe explains what Joel said about those two subtypes preferring to group together with like subtypes. Whereas, the Dominant subtype having both functions analytic (flowing outward) and the Harmonizing subtype having both functions holistic (flowing inward), create a state of balance when they come together. 1) Did I get all the terms correct? 2) Am I understanding how the dynamic works that you were describing? Personally, I think I'm maybe Harmonizing with a Creative wing. Oh wait, wings are an Enneagram thing. But I do find myself kinda "living" in the Harmonizing space and periodically stepping into the Creative space. And that's what it feels like too; stepping from one mode of being into another. Those two parts of me I don't think have ever met.

"harmonising infjs would benefit from an advocate who can market you or talk about how valuable you are to get the energy to you..." - yea, I've always said if I had to start a business of any sort, I won't be able to do it alone because of the "selling myself" part and everytime I've suggested this to anyone I know, where I said: "hey, let's do a 50-50 cut, you do all the marketing/admin stuff, I do the main job and interacting with people", nobody would sign up, still waiting for life to take me there, I've never let go of this "dream" , but there you go, life still wants me to be part of a boring corporate-ish job where i'm not being valued for my authenticity because you know, i'm just another therapist :) Guess you don't always get what you want in life OR as I like to think about it, it's not meant for me, at least not yet, honestly...I don't really know :D

Been working for the post office for the past 2 years I am now almost 25. From 18 to 22 I tried out college but had no inspiration in what I was learning so I dropped out. I bounced around from career to career in the blue color hard work jobs that my family believes in. I'm from a smaller town. Honestly I didn't stick with those jobs mainly because I just can't make a living off of that. Wasn't really ever into machines or tools for the most part. I transferred to a job in the city held that for a few months and now I've been working for the post office for the last two years, just taking it day by day for the better.

Eye opening. It seems, at my core, I belong to the Creative subtype. However, I’ve lived an independent life that lead me to adopt more and more of the Dominant subtype’s traits- especially after having been pushed into leadership roles (yes pushed! I really didn’t want it at first.) This does back up speculation that careers can influence us so deeply. At this point I resemble a 50/50 blend of these subtypes. Funny enough, I have two INFJ friends (living in different states! It blows my mind that we found each other.) I am confident one is Normalizing and the other is Harmonizing. I’ll share this with them and see what thoughts they have. 😊

To add to this, I do have an innate draw towards harmonizing. I often run into internal conflict where I can’t decide whether standing up for causes and people is more or less valuable than taking a neutral stance to understand others. Sometimes I can navigate this by dancing between the two. Sometimes I feel guilty because I lean to hard into the dominant side or harmonizing side. Sadly, either way people can feel hurt. Regardless, I can see how each approach leads to my growth and am thankful for my ability to vary how I approach people, issues, and ideas.

Any advice for a more historically dominant INFJ that wants to be normalizing for a while? Just have a steady job, maybe in HR, maybe going back to university for the well-defined structure and path (but not sure what to study). I’m coming from a sort of volatile career in tech and startups (gotten burned out, downsized, still recovering) and I just want something stable that pays the bills and good benefits, slow and steady upward career trajectory. In my last “real” job in tech sales, I was typed as a venturer by predictive index, which is very much in line with the assertive descriptions you mentioned of the dominant INFJ subtype… I’ve retained that dominant training and attitude towards career, like I want to start my own business or do venture capital, wanted to move into leadership or management in that field, but my suburban texas upbringing, education(very much normalizing) and location… like, there’s no support for that “sillicon valley” lifestyle/mindset here. And I definitely can’t afford to live in Silicon Valley. 😢

As several have said,. I can "see and be in the perspectives" of each of the variants. Over the last several years, I feel I've been pulled away from the Fe assertive spaces of normalizing and dominant. I'm not sure whether this is a function of age and maturing (42yo) or if it's my perception of the polarization of society and the infj perspectives propensity to see the validity of all sides of an argument pulling me toward a more holistic and sometimes seemingly passive "we can all get along" kind of approach to life. This may be an attempt to counteract the (to me) very uncomfortable times we are living in. Do other infj's relate to this? Perhaps this is part of the answer as to why the poll was skewed away from dominant? (Or it was just a really tiny and unrealistic sample size)

With the normalizing INFJ I couldn't help but think of the character from Gattacca. I always felt this was a relatable character but often think that many would see this character as an INTJ, but I personally see the forward progress and rising above condition as very NiTi. NiTe I think is more about asking and inquiring with one's environment. Ti joined with Ni seems more focused on finding the right thing to fit personal purpose or the accuracy of purpose, and the character had that ability to fit in to the organization role required to fit in just enough in spite of quirky genetics, while also carrying their personal objective without sharing it with the group. I think Te would have to share their objective with the world as a component of their progress, to some degree at least especially in acquiring collaborators to completing their projects. The character in Gattacca only has a few one on one interactions to make their ambition functional enough to maintain course. And it's not like the dominant as he's not working toward maximized impact, but that one clear outcome. I feel like there could be a movie example to illustrate all these types even if Ethan hawks character isn't INFJ I think it would be good for illustrative purpose.

I would say that Shera Princess of power might be a good example of the Dominant INFJ. I feel like the sword in the show was a symbol of her unclear Ni purpose. She knew she has one, but it's unclear and inexplicable in form, but she let's it lead her way into pushing the group and collective to a better place anyway. Almost like an ENFJ, but with the more classic INFJ insecurity and over thinking, over planning.

I want say the Amelia might be the creative INFJ and may explain why she has an INFP flavor, but I do know she is more INFJ then INFP. I have not lived life in the head of an INFP, but that character was plotting like an NiFe artist and seemed to be a bit too tuned in to the Se sensory experience of others to not be on the Se Fe axis.Axis. Also she was clearly trying to connect the dots in her cosmic cause effect on the larger global scale which I think is one of the most INFJ things to mentally mull over especially in youth. Also as relevant to the creative description she was putting together mental sensory snapshots into a creative outcome, and I think one could argue in a jazzy extemporaneous way outside of tradition methods. Her helping of people in a more one on one way without direct intervention could also fit with the harmonizing infj and has that extreme hesitation to be direct or in any need of audience.

May not be a perfect parallel, as he might be too linguistically blessed as a character, but I'd maybe say put Gandoff from lord of the rings as the harmonizing subtype as he advises others, and has them delegating the actual physical actions to completing the larger picture outcome abroad. He's also aged, so that per h as fits with the harmonizing type developing into later life.

I definitely see all 4. @Personality Hacker
