Notice only remote workers. Cuz there are no jobs there.

They target that and small business who are online based. The second part is what leads to new jobs. Both bring money to areas that traditionally would become ghost towns. Smart way to boost a dying town or village.

If you work remote for some companies and move to another place with lower cost of living, your pay might get cut. Often working remote you sign a contract that states this.

People are affected by inflation far more quickly than they are by a stock or property market crisis because it directly impacts their standard of living. This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

Rent here now is $800-$1100 for a studio and $1200-$2600 for 1 or 2bd. Average minimum wage starting: $7.25 -$16.00 Most people i know where i live have 2 or more roommates. Thank your neighbors that were telling everybody complaining about cost of living to "JUST MOVE!" If I had a dollar for every country person I saw online gloating about how "They're still making it just fine" and "If you don't like it, just move!" and being so against things like minimum wage increases or rent control that would have helped people stay in the cities. I warned them all for years that inviting everybody to move to where they are would just bring the inflation to them, but they just wanted to gloat and act like everybody moving would solve everything.

And have kids - many of these rural relocations require you to be under age 35/40, and ideally married with kids. I saw a piece about a program in Arkansas, they did allow singles, but only if you were younger. These places are trying to repopulate with "breeders" and city-kids, since the rural-born kids flee for opportunities as soon as they're able. They're not looking for retirees or even mid-career folks in their 40s & 50s.

I think because the US hasn't been building enough housing overall for several years now. And the media influence to get us all to move to grass-is-greenerville. BTW, what's the deal with your Gov Jim Justice? Isn't he running for Joe Manchin's Senate seat? Is this incentive program a parting gift for his replacement?

I have been to many of these places and I really do like a couple small cities in West Virginia, along with some small towns in KY, PA, the Carolinas...along with others I've visited in OK, MO, KY and the Carolinas. That said, their state legislatures...like many predominantly rural states, do everything possible to create social policy that is not only deeply unwelcoming, but often hostile to swaths of the American citizenry who don't fit their idea of who should be there. There's a couple of small towns I'd love to buy and restore an old historic row house or building and move my studio there...and I'd employ about 3-4 design and tradespeople regularly...but I can't afford to take the risk of someone's worldview or politics being imposed....likely at a moment of personal emergency or anguish.

@@L32C-yg9hm More like these places suffer from decades of mismanagement and underfunding under the guise of "protecting local values". The State/local gov'ts are killing their residents, and now they're looking to top-up with some wide-eyed city-folk, and more importantly, their children - who won't have the education or remote-work income to leave.

Not free. There's always a cost. The ones paying that cost will the the residents of those towns for the long run. Sure, the optics look really GREAT for the ones in charge but that's a short term effect. And that Governor doesn't care, the blame will be shifted to the future Governors. Clever!

West Virginia IS beautiful. I'm not from there but have driven through twice. I wish this was a longer piece. Sure, a $12k incentive for remote workers is appealing. But I wonder whether that money could be used to improve the health and education in many of these rural areas to keep existing residents and attract new ones who will stay. What I wonder is the true long term impact on local residents and businesses. The family in this story has decided to stay in Lewisburg and their parents moved there too, but what happens when remote workers take the money, live there for 1-2 years, spend money locally, drive up home and other costs and then leave? How do the cities fare in the wake of this departure?

@@pricelessjakeI think that was mostly Hollywood and City snobs. The rest I think envy the fresh air, parks, nature, slow pace, no traffic, sense of community, family values, proud Americans, etc. Just many of us couldn’t make it work before working in rural areas since we were tied to the businesses, 9-5 and offices. Mainly the jobs is what kept many close to cities. But with remote you are seeing the ones that are happily leaving the city and not looking back.

During the early pandemic in March 2020, our government printed $2 trillion to keep people employed. So did a lot of other governments around the world, particularly our biggest trading partners. This has led to worldwide inflation, but so did the massive corporate tax cuts that increased total money supply. There’s also been some corporate price gouging taking place for food and possibly fuel, the Justice Department has an open investigation. In simple words: worldwide inflation affects us due to lots of trading between countries, spending in 2020, money supply exploded after corporate tax cuts.

Because the government spent 4 trillion dollars in cash and incentives in 2020 for the pandemic. 2.3 trillion dollars went to corporations. The high cost of living is actually the drop in the value of the dollar. But no one wants to be honest and explain that until there is an economic crash, prices will stay high.
