Mike, I love you, but she is clearly using a lemon-lime soda, not a dark cola. Both Pepsi and Coke are going to give you taint flavoured results. If I still have a copy of the book in the shop where I work, I'll pick one up for you so you can take another crack at this.
@Juxtavarious9 жыл бұрын
Also, she used a white cake mix and you used a chocolate. That's going to be another big difference. If you want to get similar results, you have to use similar ingredients. There's reviews on plenty of recipe sites that have people changing all of the ingredients and bake times and then writing a review of recipe A after changing it to something completely different. If I give you a recipe for spaghetti sauce and you end up changing it to come out as sushi, that's not my bloody fault. You're better than that, man!

The moistness is provided by the liquid in the soda, there's a lot of sugar already in the soda so everything turns out sweet. The mixing is done by the carbonation in the soda. That book is probably kinda old and predates the sweetener Aspartam to be used in diet soda. This is important, since it breaks apart at temperatures of around 60 C° and gets really weird. Also we use a cake receipt from scratch at home (no cake mix) that is actually requiring a glass of Fanta at some point, so the concept, as weird as it sounds, can work. The receipt we use includes eggs and mixing and quite a bit of work though.

It's actually similar to cooking with wine. The carbonic acid works as a replacement for baking powder/soda, making the cake more "fluffy". In the end I think the bigger question is what the original recipe wants you to add. Some recipes want you to add some liquid only, which should work fine, while others require more, e.g. eggs, butter, etc. Those wouldn't work that way (or at least not as good).
@kittensolar9 жыл бұрын
I think that the recipe is very old and she simply republished it. I guess the idea was to take something like a club soda to replace the baking powder, than it would be similar to baking with wine. I doubt it would actually work very well with sweet sodas. In any case, there are tons of simple recipes one can make from scratch, which are very simple.

I say eat pasta meal that you cook in the oven. It should be safe. I have had lasagna many times with uncooked noodles in it. The noodles will cook and become soften because of the moister it gets from the sauce/beef and I'm pretty sure the beef will cook too, but it may come out as giant hamburger patty if you leave it in a giant pile like it she did you'll probably have to spread the beef out in the pan . But the main question is how long you should cook it for. I highly doubt 5 minutes will cook it. It will probable be closer to 30 minutes to an hour to cook it. Fingers crossed you don't get sick. And I am following you on twitter.

The infomercial is vague, but you are supposed to use a clear soda, and a large cake pan with a whole box of cake mix spread thin if you want to do it this way. There are all sorts of recipes out there that let you make cake using just instant mix and a can of soda and while it does technically make "cake" there is always something not right about it flavor wise. That being said, dump cake is actually really good, and even really easy when done right. My part of the US calls it upside down cake but its really just a sweet cobbler. You take two large cans of fruit with the juice and pour it into a long square cake ceramic or glass dish then sprinkle the cake mix on top in, you want to cover the fruit decently but make sure its not too thick anywhere. Two large cans and one premade cake always work out perfect together. Then you take pats of butter or small scoops of margarine and place them in rows all over the cake mix with 1-2 inches between each pat. Cook at whatever temperature desired until the butter melts and soaks the cake mix, pull out, let cool and serve the most lazy delicious thing you have ever tasted. Personally I find canned cherries and yellow cake mix to be the best but traditionally speaking most people use pineapple.

Yes, except cookies aren't cakes as they're made from dough, and biscuits and cakes are intrinsically different as biscuits soften over time and cakes harden, thus making more sense to have the baked, hard product that is the biscuit derived from something which is baked or twice baked as some biscuits are, rather then being derived from something referring to little cakes which, if scandinavian in origin, probably is some sort of pastry or hard sponge. Always understand semantic change or your logic will be intrinsically flawed. So suck that entymology from British linguist graduate.

@DurradonXylles9 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of people down here are yelling at you, Mike, for fucking up the dump cake recipe; but to be fair, the infomercial was what made the outlandish claim to mix any cake mix and soda you fancied. Words of wisdom: DUMP CAKE DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT! There are multiple recipes for dump cake, and the reason it isn't just "throw any fruit/candy, cake mix and soda you find into a pan and bake" is because only certain cake mixes will work with certain sodas. Colas like Coke and Pepsi almost never work with any cake mix due to the heaviness of the kola nut syrup left behind while its baking, and the leftover syrup not mixing well with the powder mix (even Coke Zero, since it still has syrup from the kola nut). Devil's food cake mix will work if you use the right sodas to mix with it, but your choices are limited since it's heavier than the angel food cake or vanilla cake mixes that are typically used in dump cake. If more people take that infomercial literally like Mike did, they're going to end up wasting huge amounts of cake mix, soda and other ingredients, and potentially ruin their baking pans. Dump cake may be quick and easy, but like any other food you need to prepare, you still need to follow some instructions to not ruin it. This infomercial not only fails to convey that, but are misleading anyone who watched it by lying about how you can make it.
@fdk70148 жыл бұрын
So it's a book on how to use cake mix? Doesn't it say that on the package?
@dakotalally5208 жыл бұрын
Okay, so i'm picking up a theme here. While this is clearly a retarded idea, in a "desert island" scenario, I could see some of these things working. Chocolate cake mix and other chocolate or inherently desert things such as biscuits (WTF do ya'll call regular breakfast biscuits if that's the name for cookies?) go well together. If you are going to add fruit, go with an angel food cake mix, that's what is pictured in the infomercial, though they did say "favorite cake mix"... I guess the soda adds the moisture, and the CO2 makes it rise? Definitely wouldn't go with an aspartame based diet soda, aspartame turns to formaldehyde at 87F, i've experienced this from Diet Coke left in a hot car. Very unpleasant taste, makes you nauseous and dizzy. Did I forget to mention that formaldehyde is poisonous?

Tinned pineapple is OK, but it absolutely pales in comparison to the fresh stuff. Fresh pineapple needs a little more effort, but once you learn how to cut it properly, it's a pretty quick process, and the fruit tastes a LOT nicer than tinned.

The mug cake is actually something I made today. Mix 1 box angle food cake mix with 2 boxes regular cake mix in a zip top bag or tin, then use 3 tablespoons mix, 2 tablespoons water or soda, and microwave for 1 to 2 minutes depending on your microwave. The extra egg white powder in the angel food cake mix makes it work.

I remember seeing these ads on TV...I don't trust it myself. I mean...i once followed a recipe exact for a pumpkin loaf I like that said not to premix the dry ingredients...and not to overmix the batter. Ended up with streaks of bitter, bitter baking soda, was almost inedible. ALWAYS MIX STUFF.

Whenever someone says they have pineapple and brings out a can it makes me want to smack them in the head. On another note; What do cookies refer to in the UK? Is the word only used to talk about computer cookies?
@Wexdarn9 жыл бұрын
MegaHasmat In the UK cookies is generally only used to refer to stuff like chocolate chip cookies, but any other kind of American cookie, like Oreos, used in this video are just called biscuits.
@TwoDecadesTooLate9 жыл бұрын
Cookies in the UK are a specific type of biscuit. Usually the stereotypical chocolate chip cookies are what we would call cookies.

You aren't supposed to use soda with the chocolate Smores cake one. And you were also supposed to put the cake mix in first.

you really didn't put the effort into trying to do this the way they intended at all, anyone can intentionally make something bad

Please try making the Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa Cake from the film Steel Magnolias. 1 cup flour, self-rising. 1 cup sugar. 1 cup fruit cocktail with the juice. Pre-heat oven to 350 F. Mix all ingredients together until well-combined. Bake in greased pan or skillet until gold and bubbly, about 40-45 minutes. Serve with ice cream on top, to cut the sweetness. (optional, but encouraged)

dump cakes are an actual thing even before the book. this is why following a recipe is important lol
@ButtonMasherReal6 жыл бұрын
But the point of dump cakes is that you shouldn’t need a recipe. You literally just have to dump a bunch of ingredients into a cake tin and bake it. If a combination doesn’t work, that’s just a part of trial and error.

I'm surprised Mike couldn't find it, maybe Google is different in the UK, but I found a number of sites selling the Dump Dinners cookbook for just $10 (or 6.56 pounds sterling, for you bodacious brits).

I actually looked up dump cake recipes online after watching this video, and apparently that is basically the gist of how it works. one recipe i found was literally just dump blueberries, cinnamon, and sugar at the bottom of a pan and stir, pour on dry cake mixture and DON'T stir, then pour on melted butter (presumably this comes out more like a cobbler) and bake for 30 minutes the problem is that you shouldn't use coke for cakes, if you used sprite it'd probably taste a bit better, still sounds like it'd come out a bit dry and grainy though...

Just like in the infomercial, you used a white cake mix and a "spite" like soda. Oh wait you did not so you failed at listening to1 min of a video BRAVO BRAVO !

dude i understand that its stupid but seriously coke isn't soda if you heat coke it turns into some kind of black tar
@CorCat87009 жыл бұрын
no, thats if you boil out all the water in it leaving behind all the sugar and additives, its take a long time for that to happen. not saying its not gross or anthing, just saying coke is soda, it will happen with all sodas
@ALurkingGrue9 жыл бұрын
You need the protien in the egg to hold the cake structure together. At least that's what I learned from Alton Brown and Good Eats.
@misseskimo19 жыл бұрын
He used coke zero. so no that wouldn't happen.
@htmlephant9 жыл бұрын
The "black tar" is actually just caramelized sugar. Since the color of the soda is dark, once the water boils away and evaporates you're left with the sugar, flavoring and other stuff which is essentially flavored, dark colored caramel. This happens with literally every other soda, just coke turns black because of the color. Common knowledge.

You can find recipes online and almost all of them use butter as well as the coke and say that it's really more of a cobbler than a cake.

I think you should do this again. Use the right ingredients. She used a white cake mix and what looked like lemonade. Using coke or Pepsi is going to make it taste weird. Like wise using chocolate cake mix when your not supposed too. I like your videos but sometimes your not very fair on the products.

I've made dump Cake before, but I didn't use soda. I thought that was pretty odd. I used melted butter instead and it turned out great. A can (size does not matter) of raspberries, yellow cake mix and whatever amount of butter you want. Give it maybe 20 min or follow the cake mix instructions and your done. Serve hot with ice cream and whipped cream. You don't need the book. It's a waste of money. Their are also lots of recipes on KZbin on how to make great dump cake. Everyone should give it a try. :-) .
