1) It’s super corrupt there, I lived there for work for years. 2) As a foreigner, you’re an instant target. Be aware of this and be extra respectful with the locals and you’ll survive. Don’t let the politeness of the locals fool you, if you disrespect someone and they get upset enough, you’ll be dead or in jail. Life is cheap there as they say. Give respect to get respect and don’t flaunt money.

Absolutely correct. Is just so easy for Filipinos to take offense in very dramatic way from things that we don't understand and their thoughts are ranging from rage to murder. It's like, never aggravate a mad dog. If you object to a line jumper they could kill you. You have to live there for a long time to learn how to behave.
@advancedchemistry10285 жыл бұрын
Some Filipinos are sensitive. Absolutely, be respectful, be polite and speak in a calm manner. I am an Americanized Filipino and my "off the boat" Filipino cousins are intimidated by me.

Very good advice as always Gio. Definitely worth paying for a babysitter in order to feel secure. Personally I would never buy real estate thousands of miles away from my home here in Washington DC . Heck I wouldn’t buy timeshare in Florida either because you still spend money just to get there. Never a lender or a borrower be. I agree, just “donate” a small amount for those whom are legitimately worthy. This will save a lot of heartache and bad feelings. I’m sure that a lot of foreigners get caught up in new “experiences” and wind up making rash decisions. BTW I’ll be in Manila November 6th just taking in all that the Philippines has to offer. Hopefully run into you.

#2 buy a house only if you walk in knowing you are going to lose it. Think of buying a house the same way you would think of getting a huge life insurance policy on yourself. It is a huge temptation for a poor girl who probably will also have her family whispering in her ear.

I will be the first to admit that we Americans are not all Angel's and have good intentions. But looking at things from the other side not all Filipinos are either. Yes Filipinos are warm and very friendly and will help you. But then there are some that only consider you for what they can get from you. There's good and bad on both sides and one must be wise enough to distinguish one from the other.
@GiointhePhilippines5 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right, we need to distinguish from the good and bad and Filipinas also need to do the same.

Foreigner cannot own more than 40%. They get in trouble via Thier visa, ie not a work visa. And yeah Filipino "borrow" means give if your a foreigner
@piratecovephilippines47115 жыл бұрын
Great advice, same as I give to anyone asking. Although my wife and I do have a couple of business together but she runs them and I remain in the background. No way as a foreigner would you want to be the up front person in a business here. And also don't forget that if you are in business, don't do it on a tourist visa. Myself, I have the 13A permanent resident visa and can have any job without the work permit.

Hey pirate cove do you know if I can apply for a 13 a visa in my home country of Canada or do l have to be in the Philippines to apply

I would say that the Philippines is definitely less safe than USA. Although the risk is low in both places, I think you are more likely to be robbed, and if you are robbed they are more likely to kill you. Vehicles are less safe (many with no lights at night), the roads are less safe, food is less safe, water is less safe, building construction is less safe, fire safety of buildings is lower, there is more disease and rabies is common. It's cheap for someone to have you killed. I still love it though and plan to move there soon.

Hi Gio, it goes without saying borrowing and lending money in Ph is a no no, In my early years as an expat, I have loaned money to my ex in-laws on four occasions and has been paid back in full, I guess I've been fortunate, and didn't know of the "not pay back mentality" at the time, I even lent money to friend working in Saudi and she arranged to paid it back as well, but I know of expats who got into trouble because of that. Even some of the Indian nationals who are money lenders get bumped off from time to time, these people must have a death wish going into business like that in Ph. On the other topics with young children, girls and the like, I just steer clear of situations like that but you're 200% right you can't be too careful in this life
@ruperttan53555 жыл бұрын
Yup! Don't flaunt your money for sure!!! But owning a business there depends on who you really know.
@GiointhePhilippines5 жыл бұрын
You have to do it with a Filipino you really trust and know well since they will own the majority of the business.

If you build on leased land make sure the lease is inheritable, If not the Leasor could take the land back and have control of the home. Leaving your wife/GF out in the cold, so to say. If you don't want an unwed mother or a young Filipina that doesn't eventually want kids good luck. Having children is a big part of the culture here. In my case my Filipina is in her 40s & her girls r grown & live on their own & she doesn't really want more.

If you get serious of course it is fine but as a foreigner we can not be alone with a Filipino child. If the relationship is serious then the guy should be willing to adopt your son or daughter.

The ra law applying to this is specific in that you must not be in a confined space with a minor under 18 an open area doesnt count however its not wise especially with girls being only adult in immediate area but in general this almost never happens and it applies to everyone not just foreigners
@GiointhePhilippines5 жыл бұрын
It applies to everyone but we are on the radar much more and we are much more noticeable. I don't want to discourage anyone from dating a single Mom because there are some great ladies out there who are single moms.

A guy I know running a business in the Philippines started it as a "family" thing with his wife and her brothers. Yeah, he put up the money, but they run it. Of course he can't claim 100 percent ownership, but he and his wife have a good relationship, hence the business is thriving.
@GiointhePhilippines5 жыл бұрын
That is key!

When something goes wrong the foreigner loses everything. He can visit, vacation, even live in the Philippines, have fun. But ownership of land is a sounding no! Foreigners should understand that and accept it. Filipino’s are stupid. If they let foreigners own land soon foreigners would own the country and price Filipino’s out of the market of ownership. They where invaded by Spain, the British, America and Japan. They know what can happen if foreigners are allowed to buy land of their country. If foreigners think truthfully they know it too.
@crisaldea96565 жыл бұрын
Foreign investment Law have change. There are still some negative list where only 40 percent for foreigners can own. But most industry have open up already to majority foreign oenership. I think retail and telecommunications/broadcast are still on negative list. Some Filipinos still believe most industries should be 60 percent own by filipinos and they convince the foreigner to make them a dummy so they can scam the foreigner. Better check the right government departments in manila which business have already open to foreigners 100 percent ownership.

Gio if you brought a philipina back to the states to marry, would you have her sign a prenup?
@GiointhePhilippines5 жыл бұрын
Well, I am not a huge advocate of taking them back to the states but I guess if you have real estate and some wealth, it isn't a bad idea.
@surveyguyor89585 жыл бұрын
I don't think a prenup will hold up. they will agree to anything and sign anything to marry you and move to the US. A judge in the US would agree. so to say they were under duress to sign it? ya.
@advancedchemistry10285 жыл бұрын
A prenup is not 100% protection. But, it does help to a degree. Consult your lawyer.

Gio, one piece of advice I would give anyone coming here, leave your Cell Phone at home and purchase a new one upon arrival...a second piece of advice, if your from the U.S. and bringing your laptop, purchase a Magicjack Plus device, set it up before you leave the States, when I-got mine I got a five year plan for $99....this has been a God send. I failed to do it before I left, and that was a big mistake!

The only way to be secure in the Philippines is to marry a Filipina. There is no divorce in the Philippines, and annulments are almost impossible to get for most people. NEVER buy any land or property in the Philippines until you are lawfully married over there. If you marry a single Mom, DO adopt her children. I recommend going the extra mile and getting married in the Catholic Church of the Philippines if your Fiance is Catholic. Courts over there do not annul marriages certified by the Catholic Church. If you are married to a Filipina, you have benefits that other foreigners do not. Whatever is not possible for you legally as a foreigner is possible for your Filipina wife. WARNING: The Philippines are a highly religious culture historically speaking. Once you are married over there you stay married. Marriage is intended to be permanent. Treat your wife’s family as your own family, and they will treat you the same way. The best women for love and marriage in the Philippines are single mothers. Very beautiful ladies who make very good wives and mothers! You could be that blessed to marry one! P.S. Absolutely no cheating after marriage! Good luck!

Gio, I found this information from the internet can you comment on this: The Age of Consent in Philippines is 12 years old. The age of consent is the minimum age at which an individual is considered legally old enough to consent to participation in sexual activity. Would this apply to two Filipinos?
@GiointhePhilippines5 жыл бұрын
That does not apply to foreigners stay far away from kids here. Even filipinos I can't imagine would want that. Just disgusting stuff.
@ralphstewart40255 жыл бұрын
Very difficult and expensive to adopt your Philippine step-child. It's a cash-cow for the lawyers. I was told, "Filipinos don't like to give their children away to foreigners". I haven't adopted my step child... not a big deal, life goes on.

That's good advice in any country as far as being around minors and especially in the US because many men are in prison in the United States now because one of the children wanted him out of the house or either his wife or girlfriend got angry with him and will accuse him of touching the daughter or son out of angriness and spitefulness because there are really some hateful women in the United States that I know and children can be coerced to say anyting or agree with their mother are there older sister brother
