Beat me to it! I've been meaning to make this video for ages! I have to go through this entire process with every single student I teach explaining all the nuts and bolts about how to use Anki. Definitely adding this video to my assignment list for every new student I teach. To your point about pre-made decks versus self-made decks, I don't completely agree. I exclusively used my own flashcards while studying for the MCAT and in med school, but I'm willing to concede that some of us learn differently. I know many students who were helped using pre-made decks. 100% agree that Anki is the way to go. No other platform like Quizlet or the others I've seen students use comes close to Anki does at mastering the spaced repetition algorithm.

Been using the milesdown anki deck for 2 going on 3 months now and its wonderful. However if anyone is wondering my biggest critic about the deck is it does have minor errors one should be aware of while using the deck. First it has the incorrect diagram to show the oxidation of phenol to quinone, secondly, it does not have all the formulas one would want to review when studying 'the gas phase' found in general chemistry. Let me elaborate on that, it only has the Ideal gas law and does not have any cards to help you review Boyle's, Dalton's, Avogadro's, Charle's and other gas laws. Lastly, some of the cards required some editing to make more context of the card when its mixed in with so many other subjects e.g. reviewing the endocrine system one card will say ".... is a corticosteroid and contains the hormone ..." well theres 3 types of corticosteroids and each have their own respective hormones the MCAT covers, so I had edited the card to say "Glucocorticoids is a corticosteroid that contains the hormone ...." to better specify whats being reviewed. Nonetheless the deck is well made and I think every premed/MCAT prep student should use.... I am just more frustrated of the limited coverage it has on the general chemistry-gas-section that I just read through and I don't want to forget those details. I do want to note that I have not unsuspended all the flash cards for the Milesdown deck so I can only imagine that there is more errors that I will find in the future. So If anyone knows of an updated deck or some of their own personal solutions to best mediate some of the errors please let me know thanks.
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
This is an awesome comment. I love how you detailed your issue instead of just saying "this deck is incomplete" or something nonspecific like that. I'm not confident, but the AnKing MCAT deck might have this problem fixed as it uses both the MilesDown deck and the Kaplan books I believe. Don't hold me to that, I'm just regurgitating what I found on Reddit lol. I'll check it out once I finish my testing block and see what we can do with it

Personally, I’ve been using anti and if I didn’t know what the card was talking about, I’d use the videos linked in the deck, google and come up with my own mnemonics. I start with the cards since I had a good grasp on content, but I use the cards as a base to see how much content I need to refresh. Once I make that first mistake and see the answer, it clicks back into my brain all of the content I learned over the past few years. Essentially, I use the cards as a sort of key to unlock those old neural pathways that were unused and if I was completely confused on something, I’d look at the videos from the branches to the roots to connect everything. It’s almost like a puzzle. Although, I do believe this strategy is great, the length of khan academy videos for each given subject may not correspond well with tighter schedules and I believe trying to figure out what you do know through the cards as opposed to beginning with relearning through the khan academy videos may be just a bit faster.
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
That's amazing that one missed flashcard reminds you of all the sciences around a topic! That is definitely not how my brain works lol. I agree there are many ways to go about learning the sciences and even using this deck and it's very possible this isn't the fastest way. This video is a very safe approach and was aimed at more of the average pre-med like myself who didn't truly internalize everything we learned in undergraduate. It's great that you did and I hope your approach works out for you! Thanks for commenting!
@davionpendleton90862 жыл бұрын
@@InformingFutureDoctors LOL it doesn't remind me of everything in the subject altogether, but it typically reminds me of the general topic at a minimum. If I were to remember a subject based on a missed card then I'd only need 6 cards to remember hahaha. I wish! I'll just see something and it'll just be like a reminder. For example, my mind might've blanked when I saw the card about the speed of light in a vacuum, but as soon as I saw the card it was hard to forget. Kind of like muscle memory. However, I got a lot from the video. It's really great and I can tell you put a lot of work into it. I'm still new to anki and searching for specific subjects is extremely helpful especially in taking practice tests. It makes figuring out missed questions much faster. Thank you so much!

IMPORTANT: HI, I just watched your video prepping for the MCAT and I noticed when I set it up your way, my new cards were consistently from MilesDown's "Behavioral" (I'm assuming bc its alphabetically the first subdeck of the entire deck). Do you think the workaround to this would be (under New Decks) NOT to necessarily change the "Insertion Order" to "Random", as it will have no impact, but rather (under Display Options) change "New Card Gather" to "Random cards"? I was considering choosing "Random notes", but I liked your point about not being tested on the flip side of the same card in the same session, but rather use it as a "bonus" review some other time. Hey, I was just a little confused and had a few questions about the anki review portion. Would I have any anki cards to review when I am just beginning to study using your program or do the reviews come after you've unsuspended a deck? Also, do we leave the decks unsuspended once we've covered a topic or do we suspend them again once we're done with the cards? Is this the deck we are supposed to use for your MCAT study program?
@codyellsworth79272 жыл бұрын
Hey! I've been using all the info from this video for just over a month now and it has been massively helpful for me. KA + Coffin MD deck is a great combo. I was wondering though: Do you think these Anki settings are ideal for someone that has 5 months until their test date? When I started anki a month ago, I had 6 months until my test date. I just wanted to see what your opinion is! Thanks so much for this video -- it gave me hope to carry through. I honestly had zero idea of how to start before because the Kaplan books just weren't for me.
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad it's been helpful! There are several variations of these settings and actually the guy I got them from (he goes by the AnKing) has changed his recommendation since I made this video. Personally, I don't think it's too big of a deal but if you feel the review intervals are too far or too short for you, you're more than welcome to change them! The only thing I would caution you on is to make sure you trust the Anki algorithm and actually allow it to space the cards out a decent amount. If you try to use Anki like Quizlet, it's not going to work out well because you'll end up with 900 review cards a day.
@codyellsworth79272 жыл бұрын
@@InformingFutureDoctors I believe that these settings are mostly working for me. I have only come across a handful of cards/topics that I had to click "again" or "hard" to try and make sure that I didn't forget them again. My only worry is once the spaces get to multiple months apart! I have changed the "max interval" to 2 month for now instead of 180 days. If it seems like the review count is too massive, I will extend it a bit. But again, thanks so much! I have shared the link to this video a few times. Quick question: Are Anking's new settings slightly less spaced out? No worries if you don't know.

Hey, I was wondering if you think these setting/preferences would work for a 6-month MCAT study schedule. For what duration of studying were these settings intended for? For a 6-month schedule, what settings would you say are most crucial to alter/edit accordingly? Also, this was a very helpful video thank you so much!
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
These settings will be perfect for a 6-month duration. I use these settings for medical school to remember the material for my block exams (every couple weeks), final exams (every couple months), and board exams (every couple years) so they're great as a memorization tool for any learning length. The idea is that as long as you review them as the algorithm instructs you to, you'll remember the fact ~forever~

@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
There's not one that I'm aware of but Anki has made of a habit of incorporating commonly used Add-Ons into the stock Anki program that you download. I'm not sure if that's exactly what's going on with the hierarchical tags addon, but that may very well be the case. If that is the case, then you've already got it preloaded into your anki and you're good to go; may just take some googling to figure out!

I know you said Sparrow's deck is fine and all but would you suggest Miles' over Sparrow's?
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
I haven't looked too into Sparrow's yet, but I intend on making a video detailing how to use it similar to this video sometime in the future. However, the "Reddit consensus" seems to believe that if you're aiming for a 510-520, MileDown will have you covered and is a lot shorter. But if you're wanting a 528, you'll want one of the larger decks like Sparrow or Ortho528. If you've seen our other videos, you know I'm huge on strategies and think they impact your score just as much if not more than your approach to content. From my limited research into Sparrow, it does seem to contain more sciences which can help you get that coveted 528, but I prefer MileDown over the other ones because spending weeks learning sciences that rarely show up on the exam seems to not be a great ROI. Plus, there is rarely a science discrepancy between students that score a 520 and those that score a 528. TLDR: IDK bc I haven't gone through all of Sparrow, but it seems very accurate as is MileDown. But I'd rather spend more time taking and review practice passages and covering all the High-Yield and most of the low-yield topics with MileDown. My opinion could change as I get deeper into this though!
@Lumpycheeses2 жыл бұрын
@@InformingFutureDoctors Thanks for the response. I'm slogging through sparrows right now and it seems like absolute overkill. So I think I'm going to swap over MilesDown and see how that one works. Keep up the good work. The flowchart method has already increased my biology score by four points.

Hi, can you explain why is it a bad idea to check the "force changes in one direction" option? Will it be helpful if I plan to use Anki on both my computer and phone while I am on the road?
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
Not forcing them it is really more of a safety net than anything else! If you want to study both on your phone and your computer, you still can and they will keep up with each other seamlessly, you just need to hit 'sync' before and after each study session. I do it as a habit even though I only study on my computer ha. Just speaking from experience, sometimes you'll need to make huge changes to your Anki deck (imagine unsuspending 300+ select cards with images). Your phone doesn't handle that too well and it sometimes takes a minute for the sync to occur. That means, sometimes ppl have ran into the situation of making one of those large adjustments, going and hitting their flashcards on their phone, and then the one that gets synced is the phone progress. So, you'd lose to addition of everything you'd just done on your computer. You'd end up getting a prompt from Anki, that asks if you want to upload or download from AnkiWeb (if you're on your computer, upload. if you're on your phone, download).But what you're trying to avoid by not checking the option is that nightmare situation of spending an hour or so selective unsuspending cards and then your phone autoforcing changes that erase what you did. I hope that answers your question but tldr: I just hit "sync" before and after each study session bc it accomplishes the same thing and you don't have to worry about your phone stepping in and ruining your life on accident ha
@clairehunter6351 Жыл бұрын
Why would you not want to turn on "on next sync, force changes in one direction"? Wouldn't you want your phone and computer ankis to be up to date with each other?

Bit late, so idk if there will be a response. For the workflow, should i review the corresponding unsuspended cards after i watched the KA videos that same day, or will the cards i unsuspended be my daily anki review for the following day? Thanks a lot for this great video btw
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
Yes you'll review them the same day you watch the video. Once you get them all correct, you'll also review them the following day per the Anki algorithm. So the answer to both of your questions is yes!
@chachan60442 жыл бұрын
@@InformingFutureDoctors ooh, so i should review them directly before i unsuspend them to make sure i understand it. Then they will pop up in the rotation the following day once they are unsuspended and ill review them again. Thanks so much!
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
@@chachan6044 well, review them after you unsuspend them, the same day as you watch the video. Anki will make you do them again the next day per its spaced repetition algorithm

@@InformingFutureDoctors oh, now i understand. Ok, i was just a bit afraid anki was not gonna let me review it so soon after, but i get what you mean now

I will be taking the Altius MCAT program. Any deck out there that is aligned with the Altius MCAT curriculum ?
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
You’ll find Altius is big on you making your own flashcards, so definitely no pre made deck out there that specifically “goes” with Altius. So if you choose to use a pre made deck, any would work!

Thank you for the amazing advice. Do you have any opinion on blueprint test prep? I was considering purchasing their MCAT course and using it in conjunction with milesdown deck.
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
I don't personally have any experience with Blueprint's programs so I can't really advise you one way or the other. I know they have cool analytics on their practice exams and I've reviewed practice exams with a couple of my students, but that's essentially all the experience I have with them, I'm sorry!

@fresh2352 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the vid. I just noticed that I was using Anki universal instead of Anki. What is the difference?
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
I believe Anki Universal is just a competitor app to the original Anki. I'm not sure if the algorithm is the same and I'm not confident if the add-ons and pre-made decks work the same or not. I've had a couple students use it before but I always made them switch early on just so there wasn't confusion. If you're early on in your studying, that's probably what I'd aim for, but if you're deep in it, I understand your reluctance to switch! I'd check out Reddit to see if anyone has a better answer!

Quick question- i redownloaded anki and the miledown deck. So Anki thinks I am on day 1-I get this. The deck in total said I had to review 30 cards, understood. I started in the behavioral deck and did all 30, but when I returned to the home page to go onto the next deck, they were all at 0. I would click and it says "Congrats you hit your limit..." But I changed my review/day to 9999. Also, on the behavior deck, there were 0 cards being learned. Have you heard of this issue/ any tips on how to fix it, or should I assume its like this because its day one? Thx!
@jesuszavala34532 жыл бұрын
Hey man! I’m currently doing this right now with the miledown deck. If I wanted to for example review enzymes can I do the same process you used and then continue to review those cards up until test day? So essentially I wouldn’t unsuspend them. Please let me know. I hope I make sense
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
Hey jesus! You should continue to review every card until your test day (that's the power of Anki). When a card is suspended, that means you will not see it, but when a card is unsuspended, you will see it in your rotation. That's why we have you watch the videos (to learn the content) and then unsuspend the cards to throw them in your rotation! Does that answer your question?

If I want to do anki on my computer and on my phone is there a way to sync those up so I'm always making progress on both devices rather than on one and then seeing the same cards when I switch?

While watching the Khan academy videos is it advisable to take notes? Because I am currently doing that and its taking me forever to get through the content
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would probably have my anki cards up while watching the KA videos so that while I’m unsuspending them, I can add any “notes” while Im watching. Kill two birds with one stone. Actually taking notes isn’t very time efficient

what is the flashcard app called?
@johnvanelli1302 жыл бұрын
Hi, a few quick questions. If I do not use the drop down and just click on the 1st miles down tab on Anki will it give me mix of 100 new cards from each section, since that is the limit it was set to? Or is it 100 new cards per day from each section? Additionally, when you suspend the cards Anki proposed to you for the day and choose relevant cards to study based on Khan videos do you need to make sure you select at least up to 100 cards so you reach your 100 new card limit? Lastly, in the video you say 1st to complete daily Anki reviews how do we make sure that we are only doing our review and not any new cards? Also, will Anki tell us when our daily review has been completed, which I am assuming is when all cards are set to a future date (was confused because the maximum reviews per day was set to 9999 so was not sure if the review would ever end).
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
1. Depending on whether you have your review order set to "random" or "in order of added", it would feed you cards that were either randomized across the decks, or in the order they were added by the creator. Which means it would probably walk you through one subdeck (ex: biochemistry) before it would allow you to see other cards. 2. No, you shouldn't force yourself to suspend 100 new cards if your Khan videos for the day cover less than that. 100 is just the number I use because it allows me to prioritize retaining and remembering what I've already learned. Works great for students and it's a great barrier for students (like myself) that are deadset on trying to learn everything as fast as possible. 3. Theoretically you should be doing all of your reviews and your new cards every day so it doesn't matter if you see new ones or review ones first, but you can change the settings to make sure you are dealt all your review cards before you are dealt review cards. Click the gear beside your deck name -> Options -> Scroll to display order -> Find New/Review order -> Change to "show after reviews" Yes, Anki will let you know when you've finished all your cards for the day and it's the bessssssttttt feeling. You feel like a rockstar I hope this helps!

why do the anki review before watching the khan academy videos?
@andrerodriguez82772 жыл бұрын
Do you recommend UWorld? What practice questions bank did you use, if any?
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
I (John) have used almost every company's question banks before while tutoring and I'll eventually make a video on the ones I prefer. But yes, I do like UWorld. I think their level of difficulty is similar to AAMC (albeit slightly harder) but their reasoning for science passages is spot on. UWorld is solid, but AAMC practice exams and Official Guide are the closest thing you'll get to the real test.
@andrerodriguez82772 жыл бұрын
@@InformingFutureDoctors I'll be going over UWorld and AAMC awhile making Anki flashcards over questions I get wrong for both. Then I'll go ahead and run through Miledown and Khan academy vids for content. I want to use your method of going through Khan vids at least twice and Miledown at least twice so I can get content down good. After, I plan on going through UWORLD and AAMC Anki cards I made after.
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
That's great! But if you're using Anki like we laid out in this video, you'll see those flash cards way more than twice and you'll remember them so you won't have to dive back into Khan Academy! The power of Anki really is crazy!

Im currently doing content review using the kaplan book and plan on using khan academy vids to help explain topics more. Would you suggest sticking to only 1 deck such as the milesdown deck or I know someone has created a kaplan chapter by chapter corresponding deck to use as well? Any opinions on what might be better or both?
@InformingFutureDoctors2 жыл бұрын
Don’t quote me on this, but I think the Ortho 528 deck used the Kaplan books so that’s what I’d use if you’re set on using those books. I wouldn’t use more than one deck just because each deck should be suffice on its own!
