I agreed with you that Informix is good database. But let me tell you my opinion why it's not popular: 1. Complexity: Here are some examples: - While Unix such as Solaris support "-h : human readable" option tens years ago. Informix still showing/using size inconsistently in page, system page, byte or kb! - 20+ years ago, sqplus was support format column size-wide and others to let the output less messy. mysql, psql provide parameter for showing result either in vertical or horizontal. We almost have no-control with DBACCESS. 2. Out of date: Informix is very stable? Yes. But still very outdate too. Here are some examples: - Still need exclusive access for many "simple" task. For example: dbexport It makes no scene for shutting application down just for backup database. Remember that dbexport is just one example! - Page size 2k: I am not really sure if you can see any of popular Linux FS these days using 2k block size? 3. Expensive Taking about license, someone will say Informix is way cheaper than Oracle... come on... you can not compare grape to apple! If so, you should compare Informix to Postgres !
