Ingeborg Hallstein - Lied der Nachtigal LIVE (1965)

Ingeborg Hallstein was mystefyingly all but forgotten until fairly recently when a resurgence of interest in her occurred on youtube, and her recordings had some currency again. This staggering live performance of Grothe's Lied der Nachtigalis is even better than her studio recording, both in terms of intonation, and in the unbelievably impressive interpolations she adds to the vocal line, and she displays an even more pristinely crystalline timbre. It's obvious that the octave where Hallstein is most comfortable is the one above the treble staff, but it's rare for a stratospheric coloratura to have such a nicely supported and vibrant middle register. Her numerous wonderful recordings of operetta arias available on youtube attest to the overall vibrancy and solidity of the whole instrument, even if the voice is not a large one. Added to this a high level of musicianship, an incredibly graceful sense of phrasing and a shimmering legato and she must surely be considered the finest ultra high pure coloratura of the recorded era.
The problem with a voice like this is that there's almost nothing for them to sing that might be considered serious! Bonbons aside, her Sempre Libera is surprisingly satisfying, despite being a role designed for a heavier voice - she manages to create a fuller sound, and again its her always fresh musicianship that impresses - that recording is also available on youtube on primohomme's channel.
This video was originally posted by the youtuber Coloraturafan before his account was terminated. Sadly the only version I could find of it was one with several additions that another youtuber had added. The audio and video was also extremely out of time. I've corrected the timing issue in this video (it's still not exact as my video editing software is imperfect when converting files), and I've cropped the editing additions out, though they still occasionally disturb the image. Nevertheless, enjoy!

Ich habe Ingeborg Hallstein in den 60er Jahren durchs Fernsehen kennengelernt, diese glockenhelle Stimme ist mir unvergesslich geblieben, ich glaube sie hatte den schönsten Koloratursopran den es je gegeben hat. So leicht und mühelos die höchsten Töne, das ist unerreicht. Danke für diese Aufnahme!

Peter van der Sluijs Pavarotti used to say that singing for women was just controlled screaming and for men it was controlled yelling. Many singers have echoed this since him. But you are right that she has one of the most crystalline and pure timbres ever recorded and the effortlessness is uncanny.

@@butterflyszn2342 she does not use at all whistle register. Otherwise, her high notes would not cut the orchestra the way they actually do. The whistle it is a beautiful hidden weapon, because you have a mic. Otherwise... There's a French opera singer (and old one) who uses in one or two recorded arias her whistle. Eventhough beautiful, you can hardly hear it, and her voice was way larger than Hallstein's. Let me find it.

There is an entire procedure that has to be done when they try to shut it down that has to do with sending them several information etc etc.. I also believe that it is not the companies that actually make the claim... as you probably have already seen the moment u upload a recording it is tracked and a Copyright claim is done instantly that does not bother u but u cannot claim earning from the adds... when a certain video does not! have instant copyright claim, then someone might actually claim it and it doesnt necessairily have to be the company of the recording but some random person (an enemy of yours!)... the fact that Onegin speaks so little in his channel about everything I think is a huge factor of the longevity of his channel.. also other very long lived channel like Addiodelpassato's channel etc ... have you ever seen the owner saying anything? But what is the good in uploading Music if u cannot share your thoughts...

Diese wunderbare Stimme klingt wie aus einer anderen Welt. Es klingt alles so natürlich, Schwierigkeiten scheinen nicht vorhanden zu sein. Es ist wunderbar diese Engelsstimme immer noch hören zu können, besonders jetzt in der verrückten Corona-Zeit. Da kann man abschalten und nur noch genießen. Superb! Her intonation is mind blowing! Utterly flawless and seemingly effortless, it brings to mind the best versions of Jack Brymer on Mozart’s legendary clarinet works - in particular the clarinet quintet. I can only imagine what her versions of the Queen of the Night arias from The Magic Flute must have sounded like. I’m clueless as to whether she performed them, but must have been heavenly. Were her highest notes all in head voice or were some in whistle? It's hard to tell the difference sometimes.

All head. Whistle register is not a register that is connected to the rest of the voice as you hear here. It also would not work in opera because it requires a microphone to project over an orchestra. It is usually much quieter than notes produced with the entire Vocal fold. As I say, when you listen here, her high notes are clearly using the same technique as her lower notes. It’s even more obvious in other videos where she connects the high notes with scales.
