She’s the only coloratura / soprano I’ve ever heard who doesn’t sound like she’s screeching or straining in Mozart’s most daunting arias. IMHO, the best ever recorded, anyway.

"It is my profound conviction that Mozart is the highest, the culminating point which beauty has reached in the sphere of music. Nobody has made me cry and thrill with joy, sensing my proximity to something that we call the ideal, in the way that he has…. In Mozart I love everything because we love everything in a person whom we truly love…. Of course, whilst I do love everything in Mozart, I won’t claim that every minor work of his is a masterpiece. No! I know that any one of his sonatas, for example, is not a great work, and yet I love every sonata of his precisely because it is his - because this musical Christ touched it with his radiant hand.” (Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky)

Thank you for sharing this stunning performance! Not sure why but these slower, measured approaches to "Der Hölle Rache" appeal to me as more magical and awe-striking. From a character standpoint, die Königin tells us so much about herself in her first aria: that she has her own motives, that she does not allow her feelings (genuine or otherwise) to break or disrupt her composure. To me this expression of rage is almost like when Galadriel is tempted by the One Ring: she is still serene but terrifying once we understand her disturbance lies beneath the surface like a deadly tide under the sparkling ocean waves.

I am a die-hard fan of Hallstein. But my favourite for this aria is Edda Moser. As to Hallstein, I wonder if she has ever impersonated an evil character in her entire repertoire. Still, I love her artistry, and this is also wonderfully sung by her.

Then again, I have later realized she had sung Elettra in Idomeneo. Though I don't know whether in a complete production or not.
@@eljay0 Wonderful interpretation! However, I still prefer a voice with more weight for this aria.

As a soprano, but not a coloratura, I feel that it's an incredible thing to not over sing this incredibly difficult piece and to let the voice just spin those beautiful stratospheric notes, and that's what she does here. Shes so gorgeously musical in her other roles, as well as a very good actress.
@juniorroger1994 Жыл бұрын
You might be mistaken. She is a soprano, although she didn't show it specifically in this opera. There are many other roles in which she does incredible coloratura, including a "digital coloratura" in Olympia.

Totally not for her. Where is the anger? The wrath of an all powerful Queen?
@MusikPiratCH6 жыл бұрын
LaBartoliLover I think you don't know too much about the Queen of the Night. Anger isn't the main feeling it's sheer desperation and this does NOT need a powerful voice! It's better to sing this with a voice like Hallstein! Her pronounciation is unsurpassed! :D
@Ethratian6 жыл бұрын
@@MusikPiratCH Apart from the second sentence ("Tod und Verzweiflung flammet um mich her!") everything in this aria is about anger and wrath. I appreciate Hallsteins performance and in my personal view, her version is one of the best. Her pronunciation may be unsurpassed but she behaves far too well so in the end, Edda Moser captures this aria far better for me.
@MusikPiratCH6 жыл бұрын
@@Ethratian No, the Queen of the Night is in sheer desperation (she is too weak to free her daughter or to do something against Sarastro)! For my taste Edda Moser sings this far too loud! :P By the way if I remember the text you cited correctly it should be "Tod und Verzweiflung flackert um mich her!" (not "flammet"). If you were a native German speaker you'd probably agree with me. (I don't like those powerful voices at this role at all! It's simply not what Mozart asked for this role!) For my taste Mozart's music is that great that everything a Queen of the Night has to do is to hit the right tones - the rest is done by the magic of Mozart's music! For me this is the greatest opera ever written and composed! :D
@Ethratian6 жыл бұрын
@@MusikPiratCH Then we will have to agree to disagree ;). Beside her weakness to free her daughter or act (directly) against Sarastro the whole aria is an oath of revenge. Regarding the text: I am a native German speaker ;). I just checked the full score and it is definitely "flammet". Is there any source backing up that Mozart did not want a "powerful" voice as Queen?
@MusikPiratCH6 жыл бұрын
@@Ethratian No, it's simply an intrigue that immediately failed. First because Pamina couldn't murder Sarastro and then Sarastro reacted promptly "In diesen heil'gen Hallen"! You're right about the text (even in my old Reclam) it's written "flammet". (But I guess I often heard "flackert" - could it be in my favorite recording with Fritz Wunderlich, Tamino, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Papageno, Evelyn Lear, Pamina, Lisa Otto, Papagena, Franz Crass, Sarastro and Roberta Peters, Königin der Nacht?) Just listen to the music - even if you'd only whisper this aria it would have the same impact - so powerful is Mozart's music! Sure modern choreographers can destroy every opera! :P Besides: Did you know that at first Sarastro was thought as the evil part? The whole first act is written this way (and wasn't changed)! Schikaneder and Mozart "als Freimaurer" changed it in the second act: now Monostatos, the three Ladies and the Queen of the Night herself are the evil powers! Isn't it amazing that after all those changes it still makes sense? In the same old Reclam (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Die Zauberflöte) I was very astonished to discover that no less but "der Dichterfürst" Johann Wolfgang Goethe wrote "Der Zauberflöte zweiter Teil"! (I really don't know whether it was used by any composer at all?)
