Throwing a slightly larger bowl than usual on the wheel.
The same techniques as for smaller bowls, just throw a slightly flared out cylinder with the clay and then stretch out from the inside to form the required bowl shape

I am watching this for the umpteenth time. I have finally been able to make a taller bowl like this, and your step of pulling out at an angle as you pull up will help me a lot. I have been pulling up a cylinder with straight sides, and it takes forever to pull the walls out. You throw so very fast! Thank you for sharing!

Beautiful! I am amazed at your control with the wheel going as fast as that! I always tell my pottery students to watch your videos at home between classes! I've always wondered, with your videos, how it is that you manage to avoid s-cracks in the bottoms considering the amount of water you use. The white stoneware I use gets s-cracks if I don't sponge the water out between every lift, even with compressing.

I am rather new at this trade, but I have made several of these bowls. My problem is that I can't get them through the Bisque firing. Every single one of them cracked to varying degrees. The best one so far still has a hairline crack across the bottom and part way up the side. The worst ended up in about 50 pieces on the kiln floor. Any ideas about the cause? They are dry....I actually bake them for about an hour in my oven after they have dried naturally for a couple of weeks at the minimum. Could the bottoms be too thick? Because they are pretty thick. Probably at least 1/2 inch.

@pikeevans8559 8 жыл бұрын
I suppose that is a possibility...but the clay is straight from the block and I do wedge it some. Normally you can feel a bubble...but maybe not if some of the clay is 1/2 inch thick. Thank you I will keep this in mind and I will make the next one thinner on the bottom too. at some point, the culprit will show himself...LOL Thank you.

+Pike Evans Perhaps they're drying too fast. I have a bowl I threw that I left on the shelf to dry naturally, without wrapping to slow down the drying. It developed a crack on the bottom. My teacher said that happens sometimes: the outside will dry fast and the inside will still be wet, so cracks will form. Try wrapping it loosely in light plastic so it will dry slower?
