I got a friend or two who doesn't exist. I mean, they're names are in the phone book and everything, but they can't fool me.

I find this interview very interesting and I like the way he has understood God. We can all have our own idea of God. The way he has described on how he overcome from the inferiority complex is quite impactful. If one always puts the sharp edge of a knife towards him he would be too hurt to live the life.

This is the best interview I´ve seen with Ingmar. When he speaks English he is much more relaxed. In Swedish he used to sound (and look) so filled with mannerisms that people loved to imitate him! (in a rather mean way.) But looking at this I just fall in love with him! (P.S. Is this really from 1970? He looks younger than 52!)

Bergman offers a great explanation why he prefers the thought that God does not exist. If God exists, he has a responsibility to deal with God's judgment of him. If God does not exist, Bergman is basically absolved of moral responsibility. His "dirty snake" comment is very telling. He does not like the feeling of being a dirty snake, which he knows he is IF God exists. He does not want to be a dirty snake, so, he does not want there to be a personal and infinite God who will hold him accountable

None of you ever truly got it. There is only us, here at the roof the world. We've always been alone here, in the dark.

That's actually kind of sad that he was restrained by a misconception of what Christianity is. Supposingly it should set human being free but not holding back. I feel pathetic that he is one of the victim that grew up in a b.g that has wrong value of Christianity

Bergman was an existentialist and tried to teach this form of philosophy through his movies. Notice that even his speech and the content is expressed in existentialist form. What a tortured man. He died in complete despair.

Lion of Judah you are not only wrong that “he died in complete despair” but you are actually putting this same comment under many videos? This is the third one that I have seen in the last couple days. Perhaps you would be tortured facing life the way he does and you’re projecting? Because clearly he wasn’t stuck in despair the way you try to paint him - otherwise he wouldn’t have produced some of the best films ever made and over many decades. Furthermore he hardly seems tortured or in despair in personal appearances and interviews such as the videos you post this same comment on. I’m not sure why you’re doing this. Especially since you don’t know much about him or his work.

I don't care what he believed but I don't understand why he talks about and even writes down all the demons that he had in other interviews and says he is very superstitious. I'm not sure he knew what he believed. Must have been all his demons talking in his head, driving him crazy. Poor guy. But he was right about his non existence. That what unbelievers get. Eternal sleep. Dead body and dead spirit.

Wtf are you talking about dude ? It is sometimes hard to put into words our feelings and how we think...and I think he is expressing our egoccentric nature and the forces behind it very beautifully. When he says demons or spirit, he doesnt actualy mean demons or spirits...they are a metaphores of our vulnerabilities and our desire to transcend our ego ....Jesus read between the lines man

You dont understand what it's like in Scandinavia at all. It's dark, it's cold, the pagan ideas never truly left. Sure, we'll pay lip service to God and Jesus, but out here, in the endless night there are spirits and creatures from the old world. And they wont be pacified with your goddamn prayers.
