I watched INHERIT THE WIND on TV with my late Uncle, who was 23 years old during the Scopes Monkey Trial. He shared his recollections of those times with me. It was fascinating hearing about it.

There are few movies that everyone should see in their lifetime. This is one of them.

Ironically, Harry Morgan (the judge) played (full) Colonel Potter in the TV series, M*A*S*H.

Although there are some historical references based on real events, the play and movie were meant as a diatribe against McCarthyism and intellectual freedom.

McCarthyism and Intellectual freedom are diametrically opposing principles. These principles are contrasted in the prosecution, defense, and the townspeople. They really hit you over the head with it but back then people were acting much as the MAGA crowd is acting now. Hateful rhetoric that inflames passions and causes division.

@@kwilsonjrMcCarthyism, which the liberals like to claim as their dragon, brought out the Communist, one Algier Hiss, who worked to undermine American influence and pass secrets to the Soviets.

@@kwilsonjrThe McCarthy connection to MAGA is stronger than many realize. McCarthy's attorney during the hearings was Roy Cohn. Cohn became Donald Trump's lawyer, mentor, and more. Trump learned a great deal from Cohn, and many of his tricks and traits are pure Roy. Without that relationship, Trump would have been just another rich man's wastrel younger son.

@@mitchellminer9597 Was that when Trump was a Democrat or a Republican? For someone who doesn't like McCarthyism you sure do seem to like guilt by association.

The scene is a crock, like the rest of the picture. To be sure, Bryan was a colonel. Army reserve, not Tennessee State Militia. he served in the Spanish American War. In Tennessee at that time, it was a courtroom custom for the bench to address both counsels as "Colonel". It was a courtesy title and had nothing to do with one's military record. According to the transcript of the trial, both Bryan and Darrow were so addressed throughout.

You're aware that INHERIT THE WIND is a fictionalized version of the trial, right? I mean, the names are changed and everything?
@MrCrchandler20 күн бұрын
I believe Bryan was Secretary of State when the Spanish-American War broke out. Never served in the military.
